Panda Restaurant Group, Inc. (626-799-9898) is planning to open four restaurants throughout Orlando, FL by the end of 2006. The chain currently operates four locations in Orlando, including a drive-thru spot that opened during September on Millenia Boulevard. The company currently operates Panda Express, the largest chain of Chinese restaurants in the U.S., with more than 680 locations throughout approximately 35 states. The chain offers quick-service Chinese food primarily in high-traffic locations, including malls, airports and sporting arenas. It also runs more than a dozen mall-based Hibachi-San outlets that offer a quick-service Japanese grill menu. For patrons looking for full-service, Panda Restaurants operates a handful of Panda Inn branded units throughout CA.

 

Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (757-321-5000) is planning to open an 8,000 sq.ft. Dollar Tree store at a 24,000 sq.ft. center on Interstate Drive in Bloomington, IL. Area retail includes Wal*Mart. Dollar Tree currently operates more than 2,800 discount stores throughout 48 states, selling a changing mix of housewares, toys, seasonal items, food, health and beauty aids, gifts, and books all priced at $1. Dollar Tree Stores are located in high-traffic strip centers anchored by mass merchandisers and supermarkets, as well as in small towns. In recent years, Dollar Tree has begun opening larger stores from 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to expand its presence in the San Francisco Bay Area of CA. The natural and organic foods retailer plans to open six more stores throughout the Bay Area during the coming two years. The supermarket chain currently operates 16 locations in the Bay Area. Whole Foods is set to open its first store in San Jose during 2007. The company also is opening stores in Cupertino, Mountain View, Novato, Oakland and San Francisco. The company operates 176-plus stores throughout 28 states, Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children, Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into the related businesses of nutritional supplements.

 

Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery, Inc. (718-655-7878) is planning to open a Golden Krust Caribbean Bakery location in Orlando, FL early next year. The restaurant, which features fast-serve Jamaica-style beef patties and jerk chicken, currently operates more than 87 locations along the East Coast. Other offerings include bakery items such as pastries, cake and sugar buns. The company plans to grow to 250 locations by 2010.

 

Famous Dave’s of America, Inc. (952-294-1300) is planning to open five Famous Dave’s Bar-B-Que restaurants throughout CA during the coming year. Famous Dave’s of America operates and franchises restaurants throughout more than 20 states. The eateries serve St. Louis-style ribs, Georgia chopped pork and Texas brisket. Most restaurants resemble 1930s-era roadhouse shacks, although others follow the decor of a hunting lodge or a Chicago-style blues club featuring live music. The company also distributes barbecue sauce, seasonings and prepared meats through grocery stores and other retail outlets. Famous Dave’s owns about 40% of its restaurants and franchises the rest.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter store in Granby, NY. The 32.8-acre site is located near State Route 3 and County Route 3. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 discount stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenters in the U.S. and ASDA in the United Kingdom and 550 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe, and South America.

 

Rent-n-Roll (888-466-7655 or 813-977-9800) is planning to open six stores by the end of the year. Overall, the company is looking to have 147 Rent-n-Roll stores operating within the coming five years, mostly through franchises. The company currently operates 35 locations nationwide.

 

Houlihan’s Restaurants, Inc. (913-901-2500) is planning to open as many as 10 Houlihan’s restaurants throughout the Houston, TX area during the coming 12 years. The first opening is slated for next summer. The new Houston Houlihan’s locations will feature a modern décor, patio-style seating and Indie music soundtracks. In addition to the classic menus of pastas, ribs and desserts, the Houston restaurants will offer more eclectic menu items such as white fish tacos, Thai chile buffalo wings and calamari salad. Houlihan’s Restaurants operates and franchises approximately 75 casual eateries in more than 20 states and in Mexico, most of them operating under the Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar tradename. The restaurants offer a variety of main dishes, including burgers, pasta, and steaks, as well as several appetizers and salads. The company also operates a small number of other dining concepts, including Bristol Bar & Grill, Darryl’s, Devon, Chequers, and J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks.

 

California Pizza Kitchen, Inc. (310-342-5000) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. California Pizza Kitchen restaurant at Vista Village, a center located in Vista, CA. The casual restaurant chain offers pizzas with a variety of unique topping combinations, including duck, barbecued chicken, and grilled shrimp. It also serves Neapolitan pizzas from Italy as well as more traditional American-style pies. CPK rounds out its menu with pastas, soups, salads and desserts. The company operates, licenses, or franchises 175 restaurants, mainly in mall or shopping center locations, throughout approximately 30 states and Washington, D.C. It has 10 restaurants in five Asian countries. CPK owns and operates 145 restaurants and franchises or licenses the other 30. The company also markets a line of frozen pizzas with Kraft Foods.

 

IHOP Corp. (818-240-6055) is planning to open a 5,000 sq.ft. IHOP restaurant in Benton, AR. Opening is slated for later this month or in early December. The company operates approximately 2,000 owned and franchised restaurants, which are open 24 hours a day, are best known for their pancakes, waffles and French toast. They also offer standard family fare for lunch and dinner. Its restaurants are generally freestanding locations. More than 95% of IHOP’s locations are operated by franchisees and area licensees.

 

Kuhlman Co. (612-338-5752) is planning to open at least 25 locations during its fiscal year, ending January 1, 2006. The company recently opened stores at the Spire in Atlanta, GA; Bel Mar in Lakewood, CO; Village Pointe in Omaha, NE and on Chestnut Street in San Francisco, CA. Kuhlman is a specialty retailer and wholesale provider of both men’s and women’s apparel, offered under the Kuhlman brand through company-owned retail stores and under private labels through other large retailers. The company currently operates 41 locations throughout 17 states and Washington, DC. At present, the women’s collection is offered at 16 of the locations.

 

Frisch’s Restaurants, Inc. (513-961-2660) is planning to open a Golden Corral restaurant in Morgantown, WV this month. When the Morgantown location is completed, the company will be operating 34 Golden Corral locations and 89 company-owned Big Boy restaurants, in addition to 28 franchised Big Boy restaurants. Frisch’s Restaurants is a franchiser of Big Boy family restaurants with locations throughout IN, KY and OH. While famous for its double-decker hamburgers, Big Boy also offers chicken, roast beef, pasta, beef and seafood dinners, as well as a breakfast bar that converts to a soup and salad bar at lunch.

 

Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) is planning to open a Costco store in San Luis Obispo, CA. Costco Wholesale is the largest wholesale club operator in the U.S. The company currently operates more than 415 membership warehouse stores throughout 36 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, primarily under the Costco Wholesale tradename. Stores offer discount prices on 4,000 products, ranging from alcoholic beverages and appliances to fresh food, pharmaceuticals and tires. Certain club memberships also offer products and services such as car and home insurance, mortgage and real estate services and travel packages.

 

In-N-Out Burgers, Inc. (949-509-6200) is looking to open more locations throughout the western U.S. during the coming months. The company typically opens a new restaurant every month. The company owns and operates approximately 200 hamburger restaurants located primarily in CA. A small number of units operate in AZ and NV. The chain’s menu features just four basic items — hamburgers, cheeseburgers, the Double-Double (two patties and two slices of cheese) and French fries — but patrons are free to customize their hamburgers and add on malts, shakes or sodas.

 

Haverty Furniture Cos., Inc. (404-443-2900) is planning to open Haverty Furniture stores near Castleton Mall in Indianapolis, IN and by the Polaris Mall in Columbus, OH. Two older stores in Shreveport, LA will be replaced with a single, better-located showroom and the company will be expanding its Woodbridge, VA store. The company also is looking to open a store in Austin, TX, as well as the following sites during 2006: Port Charlotte, FL; near Stonecrest Mall in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA; and a new showroom in the Cedar Hill shopping area south of Dallas, TX. The company currently operates approximately 120 showrooms throughout 16 southern and central U.S. states. Havertys is growing by enlarging or replacing smaller stores in high-growth markets. Havertys is expanding its own line of furniture, which offers higher profit margins.

 

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open a 46,500 sq.ft. Publix supermarket in Madison County, AL. The store will anchor Winchester Plaza, a 75,700 sq.ft. center. The company currently operates approximately 850 stores throughout FL, but it also operates in AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods. The company also operates five Pix convenience stores throughout FL.

 

Spartan Stores, Inc. (616-878-2000) is planning to open a supercenter location during the third quarter. The retailer operates approximately 55 supermarkets throughout MI under the Family Fare Supermarkets and Glen’s Markets tradenames. Spartan also operates about 20 deep-discount drug stores called The Pharm. The company is also a grocery wholesaler, distributing more than 40,000 food and general merchandise items to more than 300 independent grocery stores.

 

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a Cabela’s store at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Opening is slated for Fall 2007. The company currently operates 12 retail locations. The newest is a 185,000 sq.ft. store located in Buda, TX. The company also has the following stores under construction: a 150,000 sq.ft. location in Lehi, UT and a 185,000 sq.ft. store in Rogers, MN, slated to open during October. The company also has announced plans to open stores in Gonzales, LA and Glendale, AZ during 2006, with site in Reno, NV; Wheat Ridge, CO and East Rutherford, NJ during 2007. The stores feature waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting and camping.

 

MaggieMoo’s International, LLC (410-740-2100) is planning to open a Maggie Moo’s Ice Cream & Treateries this year at the Village in Des Moines, IA. Area retail includes Portrait Innovations and Camille’s Sidewalk Café. The company franchises more than 100 MaggieMoo’s Ice Cream & Treatery shops throughout 35 states, as well as in Thailand. The parlors offer a variety of premium high-butterfat ice cream flavors that can be augmented with candy, fruit, and nuts folded into the ice cream. The chain also offers shakes, smoothies and frozen cakes. The company is attempting a massive franchising growth spurt, hoping to grow to 1,000 locations to better compete with ColdStone and Marble Slab.

 

Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) is planning to open stores in Monroe, NC and in Ponca City, OK. Overall, the company is looking to open nine stores next year. The company operates approximately 368 small department stores throughout 20 states, mainly in strip centers in the southeastern and Midwestern U.S. The stores sell clothes, shoes, accessories and gift items for the family. Goody’s sticks to smaller towns where budget-minded shoppers looking for popular brand names. Its brands include Dockers, Levi’s, NIKE, Reebok, Sag Harbor and Skechers, as well as its own labels.

 

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) is planning to open an 8,097 sq.ft. Chuck E. Cheese restaurant at Colonial Mall in Decatur, IL during November. The restaurant will occupy a space formerly used by CVS. CEC Entertainment operates and franchises the Chuck E. Cheese’s chain of pizza parlors. The company owns approximately 450 of the 502 pizza and fun joints throughout 48 states and Canada. The restaurants, which are especially popular for birthday parties, feature dining-room entertainment provided by robotic characters, arcade games, and other activities targeting families with young children. The menu includes a variety of pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. The company opens about 30 restaurants annually.

 

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open more locations by the end of the year. The company currently operates approximately 675 discount department stores throughout 40 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. Moderately priced name-brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares are sold through centrally located cash registers, designed to expedite checkout and keep staff costs down. Kohl’s competes with discount and mid-level department stores.

 

Christopher & Banks Corp. (763-551-5000) is planning to open Acorn, a women’s fashion store designed for women sizes four to 16 at Shoppes at College Hills, a 450,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Veterans Parkway, Towanda Drive and College Avenue in Normal, IL. The center is anchored by Von Maur, Target, Hobby Lobby and Gordman’s. Acorn caters to professional women aged 40 to 60 and differentiates itself from other women’s apparel stores by offering merchandise that is characterized by novelty designs, many featuring seasonal themes. Acorn operates 21 stores throughout nine states, including six in OH, three in IL and GA, two in SC and VA and one each in IN, MI, MN and NC. Christopher & Banks Corp. sells moderately priced private-label women’s fashions at approximately 650 stores throughout 45 states and operates as Christopher & Banks, C.J. Banks, and newly acquired Acorn shops. Sportswear accounts for two-thirds of sales; the rest comes from sweaters and accessories.

 

Chick-fil-A, Inc. (404-765-8038) is planning to open a Chick-fil-A restaurant in the Arden, CA area next year. Chick-fil-A operates approximately 1,200 restaurants and serves chicken entrees, sandwiches, and salads, along with waffle fries and fresh-squeezed lemonade. The chain is made up primarily of mall-based stores, but it also includes freestanding locations that offer drive-thru service as well as dine-in seating. Chick-fil-A also licenses its concept to foodservice operators for high-traffic areas, such as schools and airports.
