Who's Opening & Where Stage Stores, Inc. (713-667-5601) is planning to open eight stores this month. The company operates approximately 530 department stores, mainly in rural towns throughout 29 U.S. states. Through its Stage, Bealls, Palais Royal and Peebles stores, the company offers moderately priced apparel, cosmetics, gifts and footwear. Nationally recognized brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, Liz Claiborne, Levi Strauss, Chaps and Polo are sold alongside Stage Stores’ private-label merchandise.
Claire’s Stores, Inc. (954-433-3900) is looking to open two stores in Holland, as well as in Spain, this month. Claire’s operates approximately 2,870 boutiques, primarily in malls, that include Claire’s, The Icing, Bijoux One and Cleopatre, among others. The chain operates in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Spain, Holland and the Virgin Islands. Claire’s Stores has sold its Mr. Rags operation, which offered apparel for boys. In Japan, Claire’s Stores, Inc. operates through its subsidiary, Claire’s Nippon Co., Ltd., with 166 stores. The company also operates 77 stores in the Middle East and Turkey under a licensing agreement with Al Shaya Co., Ltd. and six stores in South Africa under similar agreements with The House of Busby, Ltd.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to open three stores in the Buffalo, NY area this year. The company is looking to open stores on Transit Road in Williamsville, on Southwestern Boulevard in Orchard Park and on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst. The company also is planning to open as many as 10 Lowe’s Home Improvement stores throughout the Toronto, Ontario, Canada area. Overall, the company is looking to open as many as 100 stores throughout Canada. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,100 home improvement stores throughout the U.S. The company’s stores sell more than 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.
The Kroger Co. (513-762-4000) is planning to open more locations this year. The company currently operates more than 3,750 stores nationwide under more than two dozen banners, including approximately 2,530 supermarkets and multi-department stores. It also runs nearly 800 convenience stores under names such as Quik Stop and Kwik Shop. Kroger’s Fred Meyer Stores subsidiary operates more than 125 supercenters, which offer groceries, general merchandise, and jewelry in the western US.
Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open a Nordstrom store at Mall at Oyster Bay, a proposed 860,000 sq.ft. mall located near South Oyster Bay Road and the Long Island Expressway on the site of a former Cerro Wire and Cable Company factory in Syosset, Long Island, NY. The center is slated to open during Fall 2007. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes and accessories through approximately 95 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack stores in about 25 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) is planning to open five stores, all in CA and AZ, for the fourth quarter of this year. The company plans to accelerate the store opening growth rate to 15% to 20% as it expands into new markets. 99 Cents Only Stores sells closeout and regular general merchandise for 99 cents or less. With approximately 226 stores, the company sells namebrand and private-label food and beverages and health and beauty aids. Most of the company’s stores are in southern CA, but there are also a few in central CA, Las Vegas, NV; Phoenix, AZ and TX. The firm’s Bargain Wholesale unit distributes discounted merchandise to retailers, distributors and exporters.
The Warnaco Group, Inc. (212-287-8000) is planning to open Ocean Pacific stores next year. Warnaco acquired Ocean Pacific last year. Within two years, Ocean Pacific will open between three and five stores throughout the U.S. Locations have not yet been determined. Currently, the brand is sold in a wide range of stores from specialty surf shops to Barneys New York. Warnaco boasts a diverse portfolio of its own and licensed brands, including Nautica, Polo, Anne Cole, Calvin Klein and its own, Warner’s. Warnaco also makes menswear under the brands Calvin Klein and Chaps by Ralph Lauren. Its Authentic Fitness unit is the North American distributor of Speedo swimwear.
M&M Meat Shops (519-895-1075) is planning to open in downtown locations and smaller rural areas throughout Canada in a bid to expand beyond its core suburban base. The company also is looking to expand throughout the U.S. M&M Meat Shops is Canada’s largest retail chain of specialty frozen foods. The company features a selection of 350 products. The majority of the products are ready to thaw-and-serve, or heat-and-serve. Each store is set up with two aisles of counters and large, glass-door freezers to display products. Customers can view the entire selection and are served at the counter by fully trained and certified product consultants. The company also has knowledgeable staff that will answer any questions, as well as provide preparation tips and meal suggestions.
Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a Cabela’s store in Richfield, WI. Cabela’s would locate on an approximately 60-acre site in Washington County near the intersections of U.S. Highway 41, U.S. Highway 45 and State Highway 145 in the towns of Richfield and Polk. Plans call for approximately 20 acres of the 60-acre site to be developed by additional businesses that could include hotels, restaurants, complementary retail stores and other travel and tourism-related businesses. Opening of the proposed 165,000 sq.ft. site is slated for Fall 2006. The store would be the company’s second location in WI. The company currently operates a smaller store and massive distribution center in Prairie du Chien. The company also is planning to open a store at Rentschler Field in East Hartford, CT. Opening is slated for Fall 2007. The company currently operates 12 retail locations. The newest is a 185,000 sq.ft. store located in Buda, TX. The company also has the following stores under construction: a 150,000 sq.ft. location in Lehi, UT and a 185,000 sq.ft. store in Rogers, MN, slated to open during October. The company also has announced plans to open stores in Gonzales, LA and Glendale, AZ during 2006, with site in Reno, NV; Wheat Ridge, CO and East Rutherford, NJ during 2007. The stores feature waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping and other outdoor activities. The company also sells merchandise online and has an outdoors show on ESPN2.
American Male (877-636-4247) is opening a location on East Third Street in Bethlehem, PA. The salon’s services include haircuts and coloring, eyebrow, chest and back waxing, skin treatments, various types of massage and manicures and pedicures. The American Male chain has 16 stores open or soon to open, including five throughout PA and three in NJ.
Burger King Corp. (305-378-3000) is planning to open approximately 12 new prototype locations this fall. The prototype will include high-top tables, plasma televisions and cobalt-blue lighting fixtures. The new restaurants also have half the seats. The company currently operates more than 11,200 restaurants nationwide and in about 55 other countries. In addition to its popular Whopper sandwich, the chain offers a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads and breakfast items. Most of Burger King’s freestanding locations offer drive-thru service as well as dine-in seating; about 90% of its restaurants are operated by franchisees.
Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits (404-459-4450) is planning to have opened 130 locations by the end of this year. A division of AFC Enterprises, Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits is a leading quick-service chicken restaurant chain with more than 1,800 locations nationwide and in more than 22 other countries. Popeyes serves Cajun-style fried chicken, biscuits, po’boys and chicken strips. About 80 locations are company-owned, while the rest are operated by franchisees. |
