Who's Opening & Where Fred’s, Inc. (901-365-8880) is planning to open 60 Fred’s stores this year. Most of the growth is slated to happen in FL, GA, NC and SC. The company currently operates more than 624 discount stores, including 25 franchised locations and 261 pharmacies throughout 14 southeastern states, primarily in small towns. Fred’s stores carry over 12,000 brand-name, off-brand, and private-label products, including pharmaceuticals, household goods, clothing and linens, food and tobacco items, health and beauty aids, and paper and cleaning supplies. Nearly half of Fred’s stores have full-service pharmacies; it also fills mail-order prescriptions.
Speaking Roses International, Inc. (801-677-7673) is planning to open a Speaking Roses franchise store in Salt Lake City this month. The company also is looking to open locations throughout southern NV. The company offers a unique, patented embossing technology, allowing the company to print images directly on flowers while preserving the petals. Images can include photos, logos, printed words or handwritten messages. The products can be used for communications, including personal messages, gifts, corporate promotions, employee incentives, weddings, funerals and special events. The company currently operates production facilities throughout Salt Lake City, UT; Miami, FL and Bogota and Amsterdam.
The May Department Stores Co. (314-342-6300) is planning to open a 150,000 sq.ft. Foley’s store and a 155,000 sq.ft. Dillard’s store at Pearland Town Center, a 700,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Routes 518 and 288 in Pearland, TX. The Foley’s store will be innovative and compact, with an easy-to-shop format including features such as wider aisles, brighter lighting and visual graphics. The Dillard’s store will feature a large selection of fashion apparel, shoes, accessories, cosmetics and home furnishings, as well as the company’s latest store design concept, particularly in shoes, accessories and intimate apparel. Foley’s currently operates 47 stores throughout TX, with 22 additional stores in CO, LA, NM and OK. Dillard’s currently operates 329 stores throughout 29 states. May operates nearly 490 department stores coast-to-coast under a dozen names including Lord & Taylor, Foley’s, Dillard’s, Filene’s, and Hecht’s, as well as specialty stores like David’s Bridal. May primarily sells designer-label apparel, shoes, cosmetics, and home furnishings to middle- and upper-middle income buyers.
Sears, Roebuck and Co. (847-286-2500) is planning to open five Sears Essential stores this year. Sears Essential stores are smaller versions of the Sears Grand superstore format. Both combine the traditional Sears department store box setting with convenience and discount items. The concept is part of Sears’ strategy to move away from enclosed malls to freestanding sites. Beyond its more than 870 U.S. mall-based stores, Sears has about 1,100 other locations nationwide. The company operates more than 800 independently owned Sears dealer stores in small towns and about 245 hardware stores, such as Orchard Supply Hardware and 160 Sears Hardware stores. Sears’ stores sell apparel, tools, and appliances, as well as providing home services under the Sears HomeCentral brand.
Americlean (800-949-6016) is looking to open dry cleaning centers nationwide. The company currently operates over 6,000 stores nationwide.
RaceTrac (800-388-8035) is planning to open locations throughout metropolitan areas in the southeastern U.S. The ideal locations include land areas of 1.5 acres to two acres, a daily traffic count of 25,000 vehicles and highly-visible sites with pylon sign identity. The stores typically occupy spaces of 5,000 sq.ft.
Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits (404-459-4450) is planning to have opened 130 locations by the end of this year. A division of AFC Enterprises, Popeyes Chicken & Biscuits is a leading quick-service chicken restaurant chain with more than 1,800 locations nationwide and in more than 22 other countries. Popeyes serves Cajun-style fried chicken, biscuits, po’boys and chicken strips. About 80 locations are company-owned, while the rest are operated by franchisees.
Advance Auto Parts, Inc. (540-362-4911) acquired all 61 Autopart International stores and is expected to reopen the locations as Advance Auto Parts stores throughout New England and NY. The company now expects to open as many as 230 stores this year, as opposed to earlier estimates of 150 to 175 stores. Advance Auto Parts currently operates more than 2,600 stores under the Advance Auto Parts and Discount Auto Parts tradenames throughout 39 states; the company’s stores operate under the Western Auto name in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. The company is also a partner in online auto parts seller PartsAmerica.com.
Burger King Corp. (305-378-3000) is planning to open approximately 12 new prototype locations this fall. The prototype will include high-top tables, plasma televisions and cobalt-blue lighting fixtures. The new restaurants also have half the seats. The company currently operates more than 11,200 restaurants nationwide and in about 55 other countries. In addition to its popular Whopper sandwich, the chain offers a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads and breakfast items. Most of Burger King’s freestanding locations offer drive-thru service as well as dine-in seating; about 90% of its restaurants are operated by franchisees.
Steven Madden, Ltd. (718-446-1800) is planning to open 10 to 12 stores for the rest of the year. Its wholesale operation includes the Steve Madden, Steven, l.e.i., Stevies, Unionbay and Steve Madden Mens brands. Steven Madden Retail operates Steve Madden and Steven stores, as well as the company’s outlet stores. Steven Madden shoes are sold in more than 3,000 department and specialty stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and through about 85 company-owned stores, with plans to expand into Europe.
Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is planning to open 10 to 12 Romano’s Macaroni Grill locations during fiscal 2006, which ends June 30. Simply Fashion Stores, Ltd. (205-951-1515) acquired 100 stores from Norstan Apparel, Inc. and is planning to convert those stores to a new concept called Fashion Trend, which caters to a younger customer. Prior to the acquisition, Simply Fashions operated 213 stores throughout 23 states. The company is focused on budget-priced merchandise.
OfficeMax, Inc. (630-438-7800) is planning to open 35 to 40 OfficeMax stores by the end of the year. The company currently operates 944 superstores throughout the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The stores offer about 8,000 name-brand and OfficeMax-branded products, including paper, pens, forms, and organizers, as well as office furniture and a wide range of technology products. OfficeMax also provides printing and document services through its CopyMax store-within-a-store.
Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open a total of 30 Build-A-Bear Workshop locations throughout the U.S. and Canada this year, as well as three Friends 2B Made locations. International franchisees expect to open a total of 20 to 25 stores during fiscal 2005. Located mainly in malls, the stores allow kids to design their own teddy bears and other stuffed animals complete with clothing, shoes and accessories. Customers can also build bears online. Other offerings include the in-store Build-A-Party, online features such as e-cards and a book club, and bear fashions that match outfits sold at Limited Too clothing stores. The company currently operates about 190 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and franchised stores overseas.
Pacific Sunwear of California, Inc. (714-414-4000) is planning to open more than 100 locations per year. At its Pacific Sunwear stores and d.e.m.o. stores, focusing on hip-hop inspired urban fashion, the company targets trendy young men and women with name-brand casual apparel such as jeans, shorts, T-shirts, swimwear, shoes and accessories. Stores feature clothing by JNCO, Billabong, Paul Frank, Dickies, and Fox Racing, as well as footwear by Vans, among others. PacSun also sells its own private-label merchandise. The rapidly expanding company now operates two Web sites and approximately 1,000 stores throughout 50 states and Puerto Rico under the names PacSun, PacSun Outlet and d.e.m.o.
Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (717-657-2300) is planning to expand further into PA. The company currently operates stores throughout DE, MD and PA and recently opened two locations in Pottsville and Belle Vernon, PA, as well as locations in Clearfield, State College and Oil City, PA. The chain also is expanding departments such as food and toys to increase its appeal to women. Currently, stores average 39,000 sq.ft. and range from 28,000 sq.ft. to 51,000 sq.ft. For expansion, the company is focusing on sites of at least 46,000 sq.ft.
Haverty Furniture Cos., Inc. (404-443-2900) is planning to open Haverty Furniture stores near Castleton Mall in Indianapolis, IN and by the Polaris Mall in Columbus, OH. Two older stores in Shreveport, LA will be replaced with a single, better-located showroom and the company will be expanding its Woodbridge, VA store. The company also is looking to open a store in Austin, TX, as well as the following sites during 2006: Port Charlotte, FL; near Stonecrest Mall in the suburbs of Atlanta, GA; and a new showroom in the Cedar Hill shopping area south of Dallas, TX. The company currently operates approximately 120 showrooms throughout 16 southern and central U.S. states. Havertys is growing by enlarging or replacing smaller stores in high-growth markets. Havertys is expanding its own line of furniture, which offers higher profit margins.
Sauce Pizza & Wine (480-497-3500) opened a location on East Baseline in Mesa, AZ. The restaurants offer a variety of gourmet, thin crust pizzas cooked in brick ovens, chopped salads, lasagna, grilled paninis and wine and beer. The store designs include tangerine walls, pistachio green chairs and brick accents. The restaurants are owned by Fox Restaurant Concept, LLC, which owns and manages 12 restaurants throughout AZ and CO.
Sheetz, Inc. (814-946-3611) is planning to open a gas station/restaurant/convenience store at Raleigh-Durham International Airport in Raleigh, NC. The site would include 16 gas pumps, touch screens for customers to order food and drinks, an automated car wash and a restaurant with made-to-order items. Opening is slated for Summer 2006. The company currently operates more than 300 stores throughout six states. Plans for the site also include a fast food and casual dining restaurant. Sheetz stores sell groceries, fountain drinks, baked goods, and made-to-order sandwiches and salads, self-service car washes, as well as discount gas and cigarettes. The company operates locations mostly in small and midsized towns throughout PA, but also in five other states. Overall, the company plans to open 25 stores this year.
Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to convert 75 to 100 additional Waldenbooks stores to Borders Express stores this year. Borders Group operates stores throughout 50 states and in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Its approximately 1,250 retail stores include more than 500 Borders superstores, about 700 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and more than 35 United Kingdom-based Books etc. shops.
Maui Tacos International, Inc. (770-226-8226) is planning to open a Maui Tacos restaurant at the intersection of 53rd and State Street in the suburb of Murray, UT. The company is looking to expand further throughout the Salt Lake City, UT area. The company currently franchises 22 Maui Tacos restaurants throughout 11 states, including the seven original stores throughout the Hawaiian Islands, with an additional 78 units to be opened within the coming four to five years. The store will occupy a space of 35,000 sq.ft. and is slated to open next month. The company currently operates 851 stores throughout 47 states. Of those locations, 114 are superstores. Jo-Ann Stores sells fabrics and sewing supplies, craft materials, decorating and floral items and seasonal goods. Most of the company’s stores, located mainly in strip shopping centers, operate under the Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts tradename.
Ryan’s Restaurant Group, Inc. (864-879-1000) is planning to open six restaurants by the end of the year, including two potential relocations. All six restaurants are currently under construction, which would give the company 15 openings during the year. For 2006, the company is looking to open nine restaurants, including three potential relocations. Ryan’s Restaurant Group owns approximately 300 Ryan’s restaurants primarily in the Midwest and southeastern U.S., as well as nearly 50 Fire Mountain locations. Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 10 Kohl’s stores throughout the Orlando and Jacksonville, FL areas during October. The company currently operates approximately 670 discount department stores throughout 40 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. The stores offer moderately priced name-brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.
Mothers Work, Inc. (215-873-2200) is planning to open approximately 30 stores during the year, including about 12 multi-brand stores. Next year, the company is looking to open 25 to 30 stores, including 15 to 20 multi-brand locations. The company currently operates 1,593 stores, including mall-based and outlet stores and leased space in department stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops in five countries, mostly in the U.S., while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S., with more than 100 shops. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.

Dollar Tree Stores are located in high-traffic strip centers anchored by mass merchandisers and supermarkets, as well as in small towns. In recent years, Dollar Tree has begun opening larger stores from 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft.
Long’s Jewelers, Inc. (877-845-6647) is planning to expand throughout New England during the coming year. The company recently opened a store in Peabody, MA, as well as a location in downtown Boston, MA. Long’s Jewelers currently operates seven location throughout Boston, Burlington, Braintree, Natick and Peabody, MA and in Nashua and Newington, NH. The stores carry collections of jewelry and watches, as well as crystal, fine china and gifts for babies and the home, from Waterford, Lalique and Lladro.
Carlson Cos., Inc. (763-212-1000) is planning to open a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant at CenterPlace in Greeley, CO. Opening is slated for late spring 2006. The 5,100 sq.ft. restaurant will be located between the Outback Steak House and Red Robin along the U.S. 34 Bypass, east of 47th Avenue. Overall, the company is planning to open 50 T.G.I. Friday’s locations this year and 100 during the coming two years. Carlson’s restaurant empire includes the 750-unit T.G.I. Friday’s chain.
