Who's Opening & Where Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) is planning to open a Panera Bread restaurant at the Huntington Mall in Barboursville, WV. Opening is slated for Spring 2006. The company currently operates more than 740 bakery/cafes throughout approximately 35 states. Its locations, which operate under the Panera and Saint Louis Bread Company banners, offer made-to-order sandwiches built using a variety of artisan breads, including Asiago cheese bread, focaccia and its classic sourdough bread. Its menu also features soups, salads and gourmet coffees. In addition, Panera sells its bread, bagels, and pastries to go. Approximately 70% of its locations are operated by franchisees.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open five locations by the end of the year. The company currently operates 171 stores throughout 28 states, Washington, D.C. and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for about two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,200 items in six lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids.
Mothers Work, Inc. (215-873-2200) is planning to open approximately 30 stores during the year, including about 12 multi-brand stores. Next year, the company is looking to open 25 to 30 stores, including 15 to 20 multi-brand locations. The company currently operates 1,593 stores, including mall-based and outlet stores and leased space in department stores in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. The company operates 857 stores, predominantly under the tradenames Motherhood Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Mimi Maternity and Destination Maternity and 736 leased department stores.
BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open four restaurants by the end of the year. The company currently owns and operates approximately 40 restaurants throughout six western states under the names BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, BJ’s Pizza & Grill and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. The company operates 28 locations throughout CA; five throughout TX; three in OR; two in AZ and one each in CO and NV. The company currently operates 944 superstores throughout the U.S., Mexico, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The stores offer about 8,000 name-brand and OfficeMax-branded products, including paper, pens, forms, and organizers, as well as office furniture and a wide range of technology products. OfficeMax also provides printing and document services through its CopyMax store-within-a-store.
Back Yard Burgers, Inc. (901-367-0888) is planning to open three company-operated restaurants and 20 franchised locations by the end of the year. The company operates and franchises more than 160 of its signature fast food restaurants throughout 19 southern and midwestern states. The eateries are known for their made-to-order charbroiled hamburgers from 100% Black Angus beef. Back Yard Burgers’ menu also includes chicken sandwiches, chili, milkshakes, salads and cobbler. Most of the company’s restaurants offer both dine-in and drive-through service. Franchisees own and operate more than two-thirds of Back Yard Burgers’ locations.
Simply Fashion Stores, Ltd. (205-951-1515) acquired 100 stores from Norstan Apparel, Inc. and is planning to convert those stores to a new concept called Fashion Trend, which caters to a younger customer. Prior to the acquisition, Simply Fashions operated 213 stores throughout 23 states. The company is focused on low-priced merchandise.
Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open approximately 1,800 stores worldwide during fiscal 2006. Throughout the U.S., the company is looking to open 700 company-operated locations and 600 licensed operations. Internationally, Starbucks plans to open approximately 150 company-operated stores and 350 licensed stores. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas, and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops in five countries, mostly in the U.S., while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S., with more than 100 shops.
O’Charley’s, Inc. (615-256-8500) is planning to open 13 to 15 O’Charley’s restaurants, as many as 12 Ninety Nine Restaurant & Pub restaurants and a Stoney River Legendary Steaks restaurant this year. The company currently operates 227 of its namesake casual-dining restaurants throughout more than 16 states across the southeastern and midwestern U.S. Its eateries feature moderately priced menu items such as steak, chicken, pasta and seafood.
Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open a total of 30 Build-A-Bear Workshop locations throughout the U.S. and Canada this year, as well as three Friends 2B Made locations. International franchisees expect to open a total of 20 to 25 stores during fiscal 2005. Located mainly in malls, the stores allow kids to design their own teddy bears and other stuffed animals complete with clothing, shoes and accessories. Customers can also build bears online. Other offerings include the in-store Build-A-Party, online features such as e-cards and a book club, and bear fashions that match outfits sold at Limited Too clothing stores. The company currently operates about 190 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and franchised stores overseas.
The May Department Stores Co. (314-342-6300) is planning to open a 150,000 sq.ft. Foley’s store and a 155,000 sq.ft. Dillard’s store at Pearland Town Center, a 700,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Routes 518 and 288 in Pearland, TX. The Foley’s store will be innovative and compact, with an easy-to-shop format including features such as wider aisles, brighter lighting and visual graphics. The Dillard’s store will feature a large selection of fashion apparel, shoes, accessories, cosmetics and home furnishings, as well as the company’s latest store design concept, particularly in shoes, accessories and intimate apparel. Foley’s currently operates 47 stores throughout TX, with 22 additional stores in CO, LA, NM and OK. Dillard’s currently operates 329 stores throughout 29 states. May operates nearly 490 department stores coast-to-coast under a dozen names including Lord & Taylor, Foley’s, Dillard’s, Filene’s, and Hecht’s, as well as specialty stores like David’s Bridal. May primarily sells designer-label apparel, shoes, cosmetics, and home furnishings to middle- and upper-middle income buyers.
Tijuana Flats Burrito Co., Inc. (407-339-2222) is planning to open 24 Tijuana Flats restaurants throughout FL during the coming five years. Tijuana Flats Burrito Co. operates and franchises about 25 fast-casual restaurants throughout FL and GA. The restaurants specialize in Tex-Mex cuisine and sell a line of hot sauces.
