Christopher & Banks Corp. (763-551-5000) is planning to open Acorn, a women’s fashion store designed for women sizes four to 16 at Shoppes at College Hills, a 450,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Veterans Parkway, Towanda Drive and College Avenue in Normal, IL. The center is anchored by Von Maur, Target, Hobby Lobby and Gordman’s. Acorn caters to professional women aged 40 to 60 and differentiates itself from other women’s apparel stores by offering merchandise that is characterized by novelty designs, many featuring seasonal themes. Acorn operates 21 stores throughout nine states, including six in OH, three in IL and GA, two in SC and VA and one each in IN, MI, MN and NC. Christopher & Banks Corp. sells moderately priced private-label women’s fashions at approximately 650 stores throughout 45 states and operates as Christopher & Banks, C.J. Banks, and newly acquired Acorn shops. Sportswear accounts for two-thirds of sales; the rest comes from sweaters and accessories. Its C.J. Banks stores offer specialty apparel in sizes 14W and up.

 

Granite City Food & Brewery Ltd. (952-525-2070) is planning to open a Granite City Food & Brewery restaurant in Roseville, MN during the later half of next year. The company also is planning to open a restaurant in Eagan, MN this month, as well as two locations in Kansas City, MO later this year, and is eyeing sites in KS, MN, MO, NE and WI for continued expansion under its 4-6-8 plan for opening restaurants throughout the Midwest through 2007. Granite City Food & Brewery currently operates nine brewpubs in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport, IA; Wichita, KS; Minneapolis and St. Cloud, MN; Lincoln, NE; Fargo, ND; and Sioux Falls, SD. The restaurants offer a variety of handcrafted beers that are brewed on-site. The menu features chicken and steak, as well as appetizers, burgers, salads, and sandwiches.

 

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) is planning to open an 8,097 sq.ft. Chuck E. Cheese restaurant at Colonial Mall in Decatur, IL during November. The restaurant will occupy a space formerly used by CVS. CEC Entertainment operates and franchises the Chuck E. Cheese’s chain of pizza parlors. The company owns approximately 450 of the 502 pizza and fun joints throughout 48 states and Canada. The restaurants, which are especially popular for birthday parties, feature dining-room entertainment provided by robotic characters, arcade games, and other activities targeting families with young children. The menu includes a variety of pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. The company opens about 30 restaurants annually.

 

Boy Oh Boy! Inc. (818-888-1824) opened its first retail clothing, accessories and gift store completely dedicated to boys at the Woodland Hills Village Shopping Center located on Ventura Boulevard in Woodland Hills, CA. The stores serve boys from newborn to size 20.

 

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 500 Kohl’s department stores during the coming five years. By 2010, the company is planning to operate approximately 1,232 stores nationwide. Future Kohl’s stores will be built in three sizes, depending on the market size. Most of the locations will be the standard 88,000 sq.ft. version, but in smaller cities the stores will be pared down to 68,000 sq.ft. A larger, 133,000 sq.ft. urban store, will be added for the future. The company currently operates approximately 730 discount department stores throughout 40 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. The stores offer moderately priced, namebrand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.

 

BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open four restaurants by the end of the year. The company currently owns and operates approximately 40 restaurants throughout six western states under the names BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, BJ’s Pizza & Grill and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. The company operates 28 locations throughout CA; five throughout TX; three in OR; two in AZ and one each in CO and NV. The casual-dining eateries offer Chicago-style pizza, salad, sandwiches, pasta, and the company’s own hand-crafted beers. The company’s 11 microbreweries supply the entire chain.

 

Conn’s, Inc. (409-832-1696) is planning to open two to four Conn’s locations by the end of the year. The stores offer appliances, such as refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, and consumer electronics, such as VCRs, DVD players, camcorders, LCD and plasma-screen TVs through approximately 54 stores in LA and TX. The company operates 18 stores throughout the Houston, TX market, 11 in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area, seven in San Antonio, TX, four in southeastern TX, one in Corpus Christi, TX, two in southern TX and six stores throughout LA. Conn’s also offers home office equipment, lawn and garden products, and other home products such as bedding.

 

Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to convert 75 to 100 additional Waldenbooks stores to Borders Express stores this year. Borders Group operates stores throughout 50 states and in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Its approximately 1,250 retail stores include more than 500 Borders superstores, about 700 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and more than 35 United Kingdom-based Books etc. shops.

 

Kuhlman Co., Inc. (612-338-5752) is planning to open approximately 25 stores during the remaining second half of the year. The company is a specialty retailer and wholesale provider of both men’s and women’s apparel, offered under the Kuhlman brand through company-owned retail stores and under private labels through other large retailers.

 

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning a net increase of 390 Walgreens stores after closings and relocations, with an overall expansion of 475 new stores. Walgreen operates more than 4,800 stores throughout 45 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Walgreen builds rather than buys stores, so it can pick prime locations. For added convenience, more than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.

 

P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Inc. (602-957-8986) is planning to open a 5,300 sq.ft. prototype Japanese restaurant called Taneko Tavern during mid-2006. The restaurant is expected to be more upscale than the company’s P.F. Chang’s China Bistro and Pei Wei Asian Diner, with the average ticket point about $30. P.F. Chang’s China Bistro owns and operates approximately 100 full-service bistro restaurants throughout approximately 30 states, offering lunch and dinner menus inspired by five culinary regions of China. The chain’s restaurants offer stylish dining areas, display kitchens, and narrative murals based on ancient Chinese designs. Specialties include Chicken in Soothing Lettuce Wrap and Szechwan-style Long Beans as well as a variety of other dishes made with chicken, beef, seafood, vegetables and noodles. The company also owns and operates more than 50 limited-service Pei Wei Asian Diners throughout the southwestern US.

 

JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open a new prototype store in Katy, TX during next month at the West Grand Promenade Mall, a 300,000 sq.ft. mall located at the Grand Parkway exit off of Interstate 10. The store will have a GLA of 97,440 sq.ft. and will offer a new store layout, as well as unique lighting elements and wider aisles for shopping carts. The store also will house a salon, which in addition to hair services, will offer manicures, pedicures, waxing and facial services. The company operates more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

 

My Organic Market (301-220-1100) is planning to open 15 locations by 2015. Construction is currently under way on a planned store in Frederick, MD, which is slated for completion next year. The company currently operates stores in Rockville and College Park, MD and in Alexandria, VA.

 

Casey’s General Stores, Inc. (515-965-6100) is planning to acquire 30 stores and build 10 locations next year. The company currently operates locations throughout nine Midwestern states.

 

Von Maur, Inc. (563-388-2200) is planning to open a Von Maur store at the Polaris Fashion Place, a center located in Columbus, OH. The 140,000 sq.ft. space was formerly occupied by Lord & Taylor. Opening is slated for the fall. Von Maur currently operates more than 20 upscale department stores throughout eight U.S. states, including IA, IL, IN, KS, KY, MI, MN and NE.

 

The Fresh Market, Inc. (336-282-4832) is planning to open 10 stores in 2006. The Fresh Market operates approximately 50 full-service upscale specialty grocery stores throughout 12 U.S. states. The Fresh Market specializes in perishables goods, including fruits and vegetables, meat and seafood.

 

Outback Steakhouse, Inc. (813-282-1225) is planning to open Carrabba’s Italian Grill restaurants in Newport News, VA and the Lynnhaven section of Virginia Beach, VA. Outback Steakhouse operates approximately 1,200 locations throughout the U.S. and 20 other countries. Its 881-unit signature concept offers steak, chicken, and seafood served in an Australian-themed atmosphere. Outback also operates nearly 170 Carrabba’s Italian Grill restaurants, which offer pasta, chicken, and seafood dishes. Other concepts include Bonefish Grill, Cheeseburger In Paradise, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Lee Roy Selmon’s, Paul Lee’s Chinese Kitchen and Roy’s. The company owns about 86% of its locations.

 

Triarc Cos., Inc. (212-451-3000) is planning to open 437 franchised locations throughout 2011. The company currently operates 3,450 locations throughout the U.S. and five other countries. Arby’s is best known for its roast beef sandwiches and curly fries; it also serves salads and breakfast items. In addition, Triarc owns the T.J. Cinnamons and Pasta Connection brands, which are typically operated as part of a multi-concept location with Arby’s.

 

Rite Aid Corp. (717-761-2633) is planning to open between 800 and 1,000 Rite Aid stores between now and 2010. The company will concentrate on five key markets, including Baltimore, MD; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, PA. In addition to opening stores, the company also is looking to grow through acquisitions in those markets. The company currently operates approximately 3,350 drugstores throughout 28 states and Washington, DC. Rite Aid stores fill prescriptions and sell health and beauty aids, convenience foods, and other items, including more than 2,400 private-label products. About half of Rite Aid stores are freestanding locations.

 

Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open 11 company-owned restaurants this year. The restaurants are typically one part coffee house, one part sandwich shop, and one part cocktail bar. The company owns and operates more than 90 eclectic Cosí cafés in nearly 20 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items and salads, soups and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units, about a quarter of its cafés, which are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.

 

Big Boy Restaurants International, LLC (586-759-6000) is planning to open franchised Big Boy locations throughout FL and NV. Development agreements are in place for 105 new locations, including 56 throughout CA, where the chain was founded. Big Boy Restaurants International operates and franchises more than 450 of its signature family dining spots throughout the U.S. and Japan. Known for their hamburgers, the restaurants also offer a full menu of breakfast options along with home-style dinner favorites such as meat loaf, pork chops and chicken fried steak. About 20 locations are company-owned, while the rest are franchised.

 

Spartan Stores, Inc. (616-878-2000) is looking to expand one store, complete store remodels and/or merchandise resets at 10 to 13 additional locations and begin construction on one or two stores during fiscal 2006. The supermarket chain currently operates approximately 54 locations throughout MI under the Family Fare Supermarkets and Glen’s Markets banners. Spartan also operates about 19 deep-discount drug stores called The Pharm throughout MI and OH. The company is also a grocery wholesaler, distributing more than 40,000 food and general merchandise items to more than 300 independent grocery stores.

 

Claire’s Stores, Inc. (954-433-3900) is planning to open more locations throughout Spain during the latter half of this fiscal year or during Fiscal 2007. Three leases have also been signed for stores in Holland, with opening dates planned for later this year. The stores will be located in the cities of Amsterdam, Leiden and Nijmegen. Claire’s Stores offers such items as costume jewelry, handbags, and hair bows typically priced from $2 to $20. Claire’s operates about 3,000 boutiques, primarily in malls, that include Claire’s, The Icing, Bijoux One and Cleopatre. The chain operates in all 50 U.S. states, Canada, Europe, Puerto Rico, the United Kingdom and the Virgin Islands.

 

Champps Entertainment, Inc. (303-804-1333) is planning to open as many as four restaurants in 2006. Plans include to open a location in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area this month or next month and a location in Princeton, NJ by the second half of 2006. The company currently owns and operates 53 restaurants and franchises 12 Champps restaurants throughout 23 states.

 

Shane’s Rib Shack (678-999-0513) is planning to open 13 locations by the end of the year. The company currently operates six locations throughout FL and GA.

 

Soma Café (602-867-2175) is planning to open five locations next year and seven in 2007. Throughout the rest of this year, the company is planning to open locations in Laguna Beach and Foothill Ranch, CA. The company currently operates locations in Phoenix and Newport Beach, CA. The chain offers healthful fare, gourmet coffee and nutrition shakes, while also serving as a community center for health and fitness information.

 

Burger King Corp. (305-378-3000) is planning to be operating 1,000 locations throughout China before 2015 and possibly as early as 2010. Most of the stores the company plans to open in China will be franchised. Burger King operates more than 11,200 restaurants nationwide and in about 55 other countries. The chain offers a variety of burgers, chicken sandwiches, salads, and breakfast items.

 

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers, Inc. (303-846-6000) is planning a 17% to 20% growth by the end of this year. The company currently operates a chain of more than 260 casual-dining restaurants throughout nearly 30 U.S. states and Canada that specialize in high-end hamburgers. Red Robin also serves chicken, seafood, and turkey burgers, as well as vegetarian alternatives. The company owns about half of its locations and franchises the rest.
