Who's Opening & Where


Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open a 14,820 sq.ft. Walgreens store in Natchez, MS. Opening is slated for August. The company currently operates approximately 5,100 stores throughout 45 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics and groceries. Walgreen builds rather than buys stores. More than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.

 

Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) is planning to open an Olive Garden restaurant at the Shops at Biddeford Crossing, a 520,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of Maine Turnpike and Route 111 in Biddeford, ME. The center will include approximately 30 retailers and will be anchored by Lowe’s Home Improvement and Target. With more than 1,300 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada, Darden is the leading operator of casual-dining restaurants, including flagships Red Lobster and Olive Garden. Red Lobster operates approximately 680 units, while Olive Garden leads the Italian-dining segment with about 560 restaurants. Both chains cater to families with mid-priced menu items, themed interiors, and primarily suburban locations. Darden also operates a small chain of tropical-themed Bahama Breeze restaurants that offer Caribbean-inspired food, along with Smokey Bones Barbeque & Grill, a growing chain of barbeque eateries.

 

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) recently opened a 144,000 sq.ft., two-level Nordstrom store at The Gardens Mall located in Palm Beach County, FL. The location is the fifth for Nordstrom in southern FL. The store will occupy the space of a former Burdines department store. The company also is planning to open a Nordstrom store at the Aventura Mall located in Miami-Dade County, FL during Fall 2007. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through nearly 100 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack stores throughout 27 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.

 

Dick’s Sporting Goods, Inc. (724-273-3400) is planning to open 40 Dick’s Sporting Goods stores, while relocating two stores, this year. Dick’s Sporting Goods operates some 255 stores throughout 34 states, following the acquisition of rival Galyan’s in mid-2004. The stores, which are located primarily throughout the eastern U.S., contain on average five smaller stores-within-a-store featuring sporting goods, apparel, and footwear for leisure pursuits ranging from football, golf, and cycling, to hunting and camping. Dick’s also sells merchandise online. Besides brands like NIKE and Adidas, Dick’s carries Ativa, Walter Hagen, and others exclusive to the company.

 

Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. (609-387-7800) is planning to open a Burlington Coat Factory store at the Arnot Mall in Big Flats, NY. The space was formerly occupied by Bradlees. Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse operates approximately 367 no-frills retail stores offering current, brand-name clothing at less than the standard retail price. Although it is one of the nation’s largest coat sellers, it also sells bath items, children’s apparel and furniture, gifts, jewelry, linens and shoes. The business operates under the names Burlington Coat Factory, Cohoes Fashions, Luxury Linens, MJM Designer Shoe and Super Baby Depot throughout 42 states.

 

Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (310-536-0611) is planning to open approximately 20 Big 5 Sporting Goods stores during fiscal 2006. The company, which started out with five army surplus shops in 1955, is now a leading sporting goods retailer with approximately 325 stores throughout AZ, CA, WA and seven other western states. The company sells brand-name equipment and clothing for indoor and outdoor activities including camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, snowboarding, and more. Big 5 has stuck with a neighborhood-store format rather than opening large superstores. The company plans to add about 15 stores per year.

 

Menard, Inc. (715-876-5911) is planning to open a 160,000 sq.ft. Menards home improvement store on U.S. 6, between Harbor Olds and Portage High School, in Portage, IN. The store would include an outdoor garden center, lumber storage area and gatehouse. The third-largest home improvement chain in the U.S., Menard operates approximately 210 stores throughout IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, ND, NE, OH, SD and WI. The stores sell home improvement products, such as floor coverings, hardware, millwork, paint, and tools. Unlike competitors, all of the company’s stores have full-service lumberyards.

 

The Bad Ass Coffee Co. of Hawaii, Inc. (801-463-1966) is planning to open a Bad Ass Coffee Co. store at the intersection of U.S. 34 Bypass and 65th Avenue in Greeley, CO. The company also is looking to open a store in Las Vegas, NV. The Bad Ass Coffee Company of Hawaii is the franchisor of a chain of more than 45 coffee shops throughout approximately 10 U.S. states and international locations. In addition to selling coffee drinks, the company also sells gourmet coffee beans. The coffee shops feature interior design reminiscent of Hawaii and the tropics. Products also are available via the company’s Web site.

 

Michaels Stores, Inc. (972-409-1300) is planning to open 40 to 45 Michaels stores, relocate and/or expand 14 stores and remodel 67 stores. The nation’s top arts and crafts retailer owns and operates approximately 870 Michaels Stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. Michaels sells art and hobby supplies, décor, frames, needlecraft kits, party supplies, seasonal products, and silk and dried flowers. Employees teach in-store craft classes to generate interest and boost sales. Michaels also operates about 185 Aaron Brothers stores, mostly on the West Coast, which provide framing and art supplies; its Star Wholesale stores offering wholesale merchandise to design professionals; and Artistree, which manufactures frames and molding for Michaels and Aaron Brothers stores.

 

Gander Mountain Co. (651-325-4300) is planning to open six to eight Gander Mountain stores this year, including two relocations. The company entered four new states in the year, including AR, KS, MD and NC. The company currently operates approximately 98 outdoor sporting goods stores focused on hunting, camping, and fishing in 18 mainly Midwestern states. In addition to outdoor equipment and related accessories, the stores also sell apparel and footwear, as well as all terrain vehicles (ATVs) and gear.

 

Kirkland’s, Inc. (731-668-2444) is planning to open 60 Kirkland’s stores during fiscal 2006, while closing 30 locations. The company currently operates approximately 335 stores throughout 37 states, which stock decorative home accessories and gifts, including framed art, mirrors, candles, lamps, picture frames, artificial flowers, rugs, garden accessories, and coffee-table books. Kirkland’s also offers holiday items during Christmas and Easter.

 

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is planning to open a Barnes & Noble bookstore at the River Hills Mall located at the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 14 in Mankato, MN. Opening is slated for March 2007. The company currently operates about 824 Barnes & Noble superstores throughout 50 states and Washington, DC.
