Who's Opening & Where Wellington Franchising Systems, LLC (714-464-3030) is planning to open 125 Sports Clips locations of 1,000 sq.ft. to 1,500 sq.ft. in southern CA. The company is opening two Sports Clips locations in the area this month, including a store slated to open at the Newland Center in Huntington Beach. The second store will be located at the Woodbury Commons in Irvine. Sports Clips is a national sports-themed hair-care franchise targeted at men and boys. Customers can watch sporting events on a big-screen television in the waiting room and at each stylists’ station. The Georgetown, TX-based company currently operates 360 units in 32 states.
Passport Restaurants, Inc. (407-240-9190) is planning to open 28 New York NY Fresh Deli locations in the U.S., Japan and Middle East. The company opened two restaurants in October, including its first NY location in Garden City and its third FL location in Deland. At the end of the third quarter, there were 30 franchised New York NY Fresh Deli locations operating in 15 states. The restaurants offer NY style hot sub sandwiches, gourmet deli sandwiches and salads.
Sprouts (480-814-8016) is planning to open 50 stores during the next five years in AZ, CA and TX. Based in Phoenix, AZ, the chain plans to open seven to eight stores next year and 10 to 12 in 2008. The biggest expansion is planned for TX, joining Sprouts locations in Flower Mound, Plano and Dallas. The company first opened during 2002 in Chandler, AZ and now operates 18 stores ranging from 25,000 sq.ft. to 35,000 sq.ft. The specialty grocery stores focus on local produce.
Leebo Stores, Inc. (318-449-1578) is planning to open 11 Dagwood’s Sandwich Shoppes in the Baton Rouge, LA area. The first location will be in Alexandria, LA in Spring 2007, followed by a training store in Baton Rouge. The company plans to open 129 units in the coming years. Three locations are slated in FL, and the first restaurant opened last month. In 2007, the company plans to open two restaurants a week to total 500 locations in the southeastern U.S. Based on the Blondie comic strip, the concept is a quick-service sandwich restaurant featuring more than 30 menu items, including wraps, desserts, soups and salads.
Really Cool Foods (212-605-0900) is planning to open a second location in NY. Possible locations include Scarsdale or Manhattan. The company opened its 4,000 sq.ft. flagship location in Manhattan during May. Really Cool Foods is an organic prepared food store.
Rubio’s Restaurants, Inc. (760-929-8226) is planning to open five Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants by the end of the year, as well as growing by 10% to 15% in 2007. The company recently opened six locations with a new prototype design. The company operates, licenses or franchises more than 160 restaurants in AZ, CA, CO, NV and UT.

The company opened its first 1,000 sq.ft. store during January in Phoenix, AZ and plans to open a second store in Scotsdale, AZ. Other planned AZ locations include 900 sq.ft. to 1,200 sq.ft. stores in Tempe, the West Valley, downtown Phoenix and the East Valley. Souvia specializes in loose teas and accessories as well as take-out drinks.
Guess, Inc. (800-22-GUESS) plans to open a new retail format in North American next year called G by Guess. The stores will compete with Hollister. Introduced last month, the stores will offer a less expensive brand of Guess apparel. The company plans to convert 10 Guess retail stores and 11 factory stores into G By Guess stores and will open nine new stores by the end of the year. Guess Inc. operates 330 retail stores in the United States and Canada.
Wegmans (585-464-4755) is planning to open two 140,000 sq.ft. stores in Crofton and Landover, MD. The Crofton location will be located at The Village at Waugh Chapel lifestyle center and may open at the end of 2008 or beginning of 2009. The Landover store will open at the Woodmore Towne Center by 2009. Most recently during June, the company opened a store in Cherry Hill, NJ at the site of the former Garden State Race Track.
Five Below, Inc. (215-546-7909) is planning to open about 50 stores in the next two years as it looks to expand in the East Coast. Recently, the company opened 10,000 sq.ft. stores in Massaponax and Sterling, VA. Initially Five Below stores were 5,000 sq.ft., but then were expanded to 8,000 sq.ft. In the fourth quarter, the company opened three stores in Los Altos, CA; Redmond, WA and Milwaukee, WI, while relocating one store to Atlanta, GA. In addition, the company recently opened Whole Foods locations in West Orange, NJ and Tigard, OH as well as a Seattle, WA location last month and plans to relocate a store to Dallas, TX this month. The company also opened a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the site of a former Publix in Mandarin, FL at the Mandarin Landing shopping center. The location is slated to open in 2008. In addition, Whole Foods Market is opening a store in Napa, CA at the Bel Aire Plaza during late 2007. The store will take over a former Ralphs and Longs Drugs for a space of 50,000 sq.ft. During the second quarter, the company opened 52 stores that generated sales of $14.6 million. In 2005, the company opened 131 locations. Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc (303-595-4000) is planning to open 95 to 105 restaurants in 2007, with 10% of the units opening in new markets. For 2006, the company planned 80 to 90 openings. So far, it has opened 59 locations this year. Chipotle Mexican Grill offers a menu of burritos, tacos and salads. The company currently operates 530 locations.
Office Depot, Inc. (561-438-4431) is planning to open 100 stores in Chicago, IL as part of a 350-store expansion plan through 2008. The 100 Chicago locations will be in the company’s M2 format, featuring smaller stores.
Sephora USA, Inc. (415-284-3300) is planning to open 60 Sephora stores in 2007. The company is opening two stores this month in Providence, RI and in Lake Grove, NY. The company operates stores in the U.S. and Europe selling makeup, fragrances and skin care products.
Bare Escentuals, Inc. (415-489-5000) is planning to open 10 locations next year. The San Francisco, CA-based cosmetics chain currently operates 32 boutiques nationwide and also sells to stores such as Sephora and Ulta.
Swiss Farms (610-356-2070) is planning to open 10 drive-thru convenience stores by 2008. The company currently operates stores in Delaware and Chester counties in PA. The company most recently opened a 12,000 sq.ft. store in Lionville, PA with two drive-thru lanes. The stores offer gourmet coffee and a food service offering breakfast foods, microwaveable Italian dinners, salads and fresh dairy products.
Booster Juice (780-440-6770), teaming up with The Houston Smoothie, LLC, is planning to open its first Houston, TX store next year in the first quarter, to be followed by three more locations. In all, the company plans to open 30 to 40 stores in the Houston market. Elsewhere, Booster Juice is planning to open 20 stores nationwide in the second half of the year, adding to its 150 stores throughout North America. Booster Juice uses 100% fruit juice and has no added sugar, high fructose corn syrup or artificial sweeteners.
Alienware (800-ALIENWARE) is planning to open two kiosks in McClean, VA and West Nyack, NY and is considering opening inline stores. The company opened its first kiosk last year in Miami, FL at the Dadeland Mall. The company sells computer hardware, software and accessories for home or office use.
California Pizza Kitchen, Inc. (214-750-7143) is planning to open 16 to 18 full-service restaurants, six to seven ASAP locations and an LA Food Show restaurant in 2007. The store will be the company’s second in ID, following the first ID location that opened in Boise during August. The company also is planning to open stores in Wheat Ridge, CO; East Hartford, CT; Adairsville, GA; Hoffman, Estates, IL; Hammond, IN; Gonzalez, LA; Hazelwood, MO; East Rutherford, NJ; Reno, NV and Montreal, Canada. The stores sell hunting, fishing and outdoor gear. Cabela’s operates 18 locations and this year opened stores in Glendale, AZ; Boise, ID; La Vista, NE and Richfield, WI.
G.I. Joe’s (503-682-2242) is planning to open locations in Bellevue and Kirkland, OR in April 2007. The company operates 26 full-line sports and outdoors stores in OR and WA. Most recently, the company opened a location in Bellingham, WA, which is its 12th store in the state.
DSW, Inc. (614-237-7100) is planning to open 30 stores annually through. The stores sell discounted brand-name footwear for men and women at 200 locations in 32 states. About six stores carry footwear for children. The stores also offer handbags, hosiery and accessories. The company is controlled by Retail Ventures, Inc. and went public last year.
Zambooie.com (615-316-9077) is planning to open its first store, Nashville Clothing Co., on West End Avenue in Nashville, TN. Nashville Clothing Co. will sell Zambooie.com’s brand of merchandise as well as the merchandise of national and local bands. Plans call for opening stores throughout Kentucky, TN and Atlanta, GA. Its online presence generated about $3 million in sales this year. The company cites Hot Topic as competition. Make and Take Gourmet (315-701-0472) is opening stores throughout NY, in Baldwinsville, Fayetteville, Camillus and Rochester. A Rochester location opened last month and more stores in that area are planned. The 2,500 sq.ft. Baldwinsville store will be located on West Genesee Street and will open this month. The Fayetteville store will also open this month. The company also operates a 2,800 sq.ft. Cicero, NY location. The company is also considering opening stores in NJ, NC and Montreal, Canada. The stores provide all the ingredients to prepare meals and the containers in which to freeze them.
Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Inc. (510-594-2100) is planning to open 30 to 35 stores during 2007, including six to eight in the first quarter of next year. During the fourth quarter of this year, the company plans to open 10 to 12 locations. The company is a specialty coffee roaster and markets whole bean coffee. The stores sell coffee, tea and related items.
Lava Flow Ventures (916-967-4724) is planning to open 62 Maui Taco restaurants in CA during the next seven years. The companies signed a development agreement in November, following an initial agreement in 2004 to open 12 locations. Lava Flow Ventures opened its first Maui Taco location during February in Roseville, CA and a second restaurant in El Dorado Hills, CA last month. The company expects to open four locations next year with a goal of opening 70 restaurants in three years and 200 by 2014. Last month, Maui Taco signed an agreement with Meritage Enterprises to open 10 locations during the next five years, with two opening next year. Lava Flow Ventures is looking to open restaurants in the following CA counties: Bernardino, Contra Costa, parts of Los Angeles, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Clara, Solano, Ventura and Yolo. The restaurants combine Hawaiian and Mexican flavors. There are currently 18 Maui Taco locations in 10 cities nationwide.
Dr. Mojoe, LLC (614-291-MOJO) is planning to open three FL stores in the coming years. In May, the company opened a second store in Cincinnati, OH and a third store in Easton, OH during September. The company anticipates opening a store at the Shops at Pembrook Garden in Miami, FL next year. The stores specialize in denim with jeans having an average price point of $180. In addition, Dr. Mojoe, LLC is targeting cotenants such as Banana Republic and Soma.

Liz Claiborne, Inc. (866-549-7467) is planning to open 200 Kate Spade stores across the U.S., Canada, Europe, Asia and Middle East following the company’s $125 million acquisition of the brand from Neiman Marcus Group. The company will add the brand to its other acquisitions including Juicy Couture and Lucky Brand Jeans. There are currently 19 Kate Spade stores operating throughout the U.S.

Michael Hill International (604-484-3968) is planning to open six jewelry stores in Canada and the company is considering open additional locations in U.S. and Britain. The company operates 177 stores worldwide, including 12 in Canada, 116 in Australia and 49 in New Zealand.
84 Lumber (724-228-8820) is planning to open a store in Wichita, KS at the intersection of 45th Street North and Webb Road. The company acquired 12 acres and construction is slated for 2008. The new location is part of a larger, systemwide expansion plan, with projects scheduled into 2009. The company currently operates 500 stores primarily in the East and Southeast U.S., ranging in size from 25,000 sq.ft. to 150,000 sq.ft.
BC Roosters, Inc. (614-262-3185) is planning to open seven Rooster’s restaurants in Cincinnati, OH. The company entered into a franchise agreement with BRF Management Group to open restaurants during the next four to five years. The first location is slated to open in early 2007. Rooster’s is a Columbus, OH-based chain of eateries known for fat chicken wings, Dumpster fries and a playful atmosphere.
Del Taco, Inc. (949-462-9300) franchisees are planning to open 10 locations, with two to four openings next year and three to four units opening in 2008. The first Del Taco in Chicago, IL is slated to open late 2006 or early 2007 in the Green Oak Shopping Center at the intersection of 95th Street and Cicero Avenue. The franchisees are eyeing other IL sites, including Bridgeview, Crestwood, Evergreen Park, Orland Park, Summit and Tinley Park. Del Taco currently operates about 470 locations and has 60 franchise development agreements that could add about 340 more restaurants during the next five years.
Cosi, Inc. (847-444-3200) is planning to open 345 restaurants with 27 franchisees. The company operates more than 100 restaurants in 16 states and the Washington, DC. The stores offer sandwiches, salads, pizzas, soups, bagels, gourmet beverages and desserts.
Cuppy’s Coffee, Smoothies & More (888-241-4324) is planning to open three locations in Payson, AZ; Chino, CA and Lakeland, FL. The stores can be stand-alone units using outparcel space and are available as drive-ups, coffee cafes and a mobile unit. The stores range from 600 sq.ft. and up. The company is planning to open 150 locations next year, offering specialty coffee drinks and smoothies.
Trader Joe’s Co. (626-599-3817) is planning to open a 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft. store during 2007 in Charlotte, NC at the Piper Glen Shopping Center. The company also plans to open a store at The Arbors on Mallard Creek Church Road in Charlotte. The company is also planning to open a location in Glendale, NY in early 2007. Belk department store in Cape Coral, FL at the intersection of Surfside Boulevard and Veteran’s Parkway at the Shops at Surfside, currently being developed. The store is slated to open in 2007. Most recently, the company opened a Belk location in Estero, FL at the Gulf Coast Town Center. The company operates more than 275 stores in 16 states in the Southeast, Southwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S.
Cinemark USA, Inc. (972-665-1000) is planning to open Cinemark 12 at Porter’s Vale Shopping Center in Spring 2008. Porter’s Vale is a new 750,000 sq.ft. shopping center planned for Valparaiso, IN and anchored by a JCPenney, slated to open Fall 2007. The theater will feature 12 screens, stadium seating, online ticketing, digital sound, wall-to-wall screens and concession stands. The company operates 309 theaters and 3,353 screens in 33 U.S. states, Mexico, South America and Central America.
Portillo Restaurant Group (630-954-3773) is planning to open two Portillo’s Hot Dogs and Barnelli’s Pasta locations in Schererville, IN and a third CA restaurant in 2008. The Schererville unit will be located at a shopping center to be developed on the site of the Schererville Golf and Fun Center. Last month, the company opened a 10,000 sq.ft. restaurant in Merrillville, IN at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Broadway. The restaurants have décor resembling 1920s and 1930s styles and offer hot dogs, burgers and beef sandwiches.

The company is opening an 85,361 sq.ft. store in Hammond, LA as part of a redevelopment plan for Hammond Square, and will co-anchor the center along with Target and Home Depot. The Plano, TX-based department store chain currently operates 1,021 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Dell, Inc. (512-338-4400) is planning to open a 3,000 sq.ft. store in West Nyack, NY in early 2007. The store’s opening had been planned for this year, but the company is revamping the original design. The company opened its first location in Dallas, TX during July, allowing customers to see and touch Dell’s computers and other products before ordering online or over the phone. Dell bypasses retailers and sells its products directly to consumers.
Rapid Refill Ink International (877-880-4465) is planning to open 50 locations throughout CA during the next two years. The company recently opened its first southern CA location in Los Angeles. Rapid Refill Ink specializes in the remanufacturing/refilling and selling of inkjet and laser toner cartridges. Ukrop’s Supermarket, Inc. (804-340-3000) is planning to open an Ukrop’s location at White Oak Village in Henrico County, VA on Laburnum Avenue. The project is tenanted by Target and Lowe’s Home Improvement. The company operates 28 grocery stores.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement in Hutto Town Center in Hutto, TX. The 135,000 sq.ft. store would anchor the project’s first phase, with the opening slated for Fall 2007. NewQuest Properties, the project’s developer, is also negotiating with two banks and a fast-food restaurant for sites in the first phase, which would also include an additional 15,000 sq.ft. The second phase would include a big box anchor, plus four pad sites and 35,000 sq.ft. of additional retail space.
Baskin-Robbins (800-859-5339) is planning to open 100 stand-alone locations in 2007. The company’s goal is to open 600 new locations in the U.S. during the next five years. In addition, the company has been redesigning 240 of its stores, with plans to remodel all 2,700 of its U.S. locations. The company operates more than 5,600 stores in 40 countries. |
