Who's Opening & Where


Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear (516-267-7359) opened a 24,000 sq.ft. store at Fort Steuben Mall in Steubenville, OH. Tenants in the mall include Macy’s, Wal*Mart Supercenter, Sears, Dick’s, JCPenney, Pac Sun and Foot Locker. The company also plans to open a store in Akron, OH at the Chapel Hill Mall in early 2007. Currently operating about 300 stores in 33 states, the company sells low-priced high-quality merchandise, including Starbury shoes from the New York Knicks’ Stephon Marbury.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a 204,000 sq.ft. Wal*Mart Supercenter in the proposed Hancock Village in Richmond, VA at the intersection of Hull Street and Winterpock Road. The project will also include a 103,000 sq.ft. JCPenney store and is slated to open spring 2008. The company is also planning to open five Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the metro Detroit, MI area next year, as well as three more potential stores during 2008. In addition, the company is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter in Timnath, CO during 2008 at the intersection of Harmony Road and Interstate 25. The company is also planning to open two Wal*Mart Supercenter stores in Springfield, IL during summer 2008 on Wabash Avenue and at the intersection of Sixth Street and Hazel Dell Road. In all, the company plans to open 600 locations worldwide by 2008. Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. currently operates 100 stores in MI, including 38 supercenters.

 

LA Fitness International, LLC (949-255-7200) is planning to open two LA Fitness locations in FL during the next year in Cape Coral and Bonita Springs. In Cape Coral, the company will be opening a 44,860 sq.ft. location in Coralwood Shopping Center in a space formerly occupied by Winn-Dixie. LA Fitness signed a 15-year lease for the site. The center is located at the intersection of Del Prado Boulevard and Veterans Parkway. In Bonita Springs, the company will be opening a 45,000 sq.ft. location at Springs Plaza. LA Fitness operates 25 sports clubs in FL.

 

Ace Hardware Corp. (630-990-6600) is planning to open a store in the Champlain Shopping Center in Champlain, NY. Opening is scheduled for spring 2007. The space previously housed Grand Union. The company operates more than 4,800 stores in 70 countries.

 

Mean Bean Caffeine Lounge (740-369-5282) is planning to open additional company-owned stores, as well as possibly opening franchised locations. The company currently operates three stores with a fourth slated to open spring 2007 at a proposed shopping center at the intersection of Sawmill Road and Presidential Parkway in Powell, OH. The newest unit will have a drive-thru and free Wi-Fi. The company is working with Franchising Unlimited to begin the franchising process.

 

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-303-4408) is planning to open three stores in the coming years. The company will be opening a 140,000 sq.ft. Nordstrom location in St. Louis, MO at the Saint Louis Galleria mall during spring 2010. In addition, the company plans to open 140,000 sq.ft. stores at the Christiana Mall in Newark, DE and at the Kenwood Towne Center in Cincinnati, OH. The store in DE is slated to open spring 2011 and the store in OH is slated to open fall 2009. The company is also planning to open a 144,000 sq.ft. location in Northeast Valley, AZ in 2009 and a 140,000 sq.ft. store at Fashion Place in Murray, UT in 2009.

 

Faces Cosmetics, Inc. (905-760-0110) is planning to open 65 Faces cosmetic stores by 2008, including 20 by Summer 2007. The Canadian company’s first U.S. location opened in the summer at The Parks at Arlington in Arlington, TX. Another TX store in Dallas is currently under construction at NorthPark Center and will be the company’s flagship location when it opens this month. The company currently operates 54 locations in Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico and Ireland.

 

PetSmart, Inc. (623-580-6100) is planning to open a store at the Danville Piedmont Pavilion Shopping Center in Danville, VA. The 20,000 sq.ft. store is opening in a former Lowe’s Home Improvement site, which also houses an Office Depot and Hobby Lobby.

 

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a 136,000 sq.ft. Target in the proposed Second Street Crossing shopping center at the intersection of Mace Boulevard and Interstate 80 in Davis, CA. The store will be joined by 46,000 sq.ft. of other retailers. The company is also planning to open a location in Newport, KY at the proposed shopping center, Newport Pavilion, located at the intersection of 10th Street and Carothers Road. Target would be joined by Home Depot and a grocery store. In addition, the company is planning to open a store at the 454,000 sq.ft. Augusta Crossing in Augusta, ME at the intersection of Western Avenue and Maine Turnpike. The store will open in spring 2008 and will be located near a proposed Lowe’s Home Improvement. The company will also be opening a 188,000 sq.ft. location in Palmdale, CA by October 2007. Home Depot is opening a store contiguous to Target in Palmdale. In addition, Target will be the anchor store of a retail-entertainment complex in Muldoon, AK at the intersection of Muldoon Road and Glenn Highway.

 

Laemmle Theaters (310-478-1041) is planning to open a theater during fall 2009 in North Hollywood, CA at NoHo Commons. The seven-screen movie theater will have 1,100 stadium-style seats and will be part of phase two of the NoHo Commons development to be completed in fall 2009. The mixed-use project includes 292 lofts, 100,000 sq.ft. of office space and a HOWS Market.

 

Kohl’s Department Stores (262-703-7000) is planning to open an 89,911 sq.ft. location at Weibel Plaza in Saratoga Springs, NY, at the intersection of Weibel Road and Louden Road. Opening is slated for October 2007.

 

Morris Furniture Co., Inc. (973-874-7100) is planning to open a 100,000 sq.ft. Morris Home Furnishings store in Butler, OH at the intersection of Benchwood Road and Miller Lane. The company operates two locations in Dayton, OH on Wilmington Pike and Harshman Road, as well as seven other furniture stores in KY and OH.

 

Crate & Barrel (800-967-6696) is planning to open a store in Westport, CT in late 2007. Currently operating more than 145 locations in the U.S., the store will be the company’s first in Fairfield County.

 

Times Grill Group Restaurant Group, LLC (985-626-1161) is planning to open six Times Grill restaurants by the end of 2007 in FL. The company, which is franchising, currently operates four locations in LA. The family-friendly bar/restaurants offer handmade burgers, pastas and salads.

 

Bed Bath & Beyond (908-688-0888) is planning to open 35 to 40 Christmas Tree Shops locations on the East Coast. The stores will utilize 45,000 sq.ft. on average. The company currently operates 31 Christmas Tree Shops in eight states.

 

Foot Locker, Inc. (212-720-4060) is planning to open two new concepts next year. The company will open 70 Footquarters stores in 2007, with the first locations slated to open in April or May and another round scheduled to open in the fall. The stores will carry athletic shoes and dress and casual shoes. In addition, the company will be opening Champs Sports Just Hats, a chain of athletic hat stores.

 

Citi Trends, Inc. (912-272-0860) plans to open 48 to 51 stores in fiscal 2007. The company is a value-priced retailer of urban fashion apparel and accessories and currently operates 270 stores in 16 states throughout the South, Southeast, Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions.

 

Stein Mart, Inc. (904-346-1500) is planning to open 20 stores during 2007. The company opened 12 locations this year and closed six stores. The company currently operates 268 locations. The stores offer fashion merchandise, service and the presentation of a better department or specialty store at prices competitive with off-price chains.

 

Longs Drugs Corp. (1-800-865-6647) is planning to open or relocate 20 to 25 stores in 2007, with plans to remodel another 40 locations. The company currently operates 502 pharmacies that offer an assortment of merchandise focusing on health, wellness, beauty and convenience.

 

Food Concepts International (806-785-8686) is planning to open Abuelo’s Mexican Food Embassy restaurants next year in Brookfield, WI; Canton, OH; Chesapeake, VA; Chattanooga, TN and Lakeland, FL. Most recently, the company opened its first VA location in Roanoke last month, in addition to openings in College Station, TX; Knoxville, TN; Lexington, KY; Merrillville, IN; Middleton, WI; Traders Point/Indianapolis, IN and Warrensville Heights, OH. The restaurants are designed after classical Mexican themes with hand-painted ceilings, imported stonework and hand-painted murals of Mexican historical events.

 

Sun Tan City Instant Tan Centers (877-362-1097) is planning to open nine stores by March 2007. Plans call for opening two locations in Louisville, KY at Holiday Manor and on Poplar Level Road. The company currently operates 37 locations of 2,500 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft. throughout IN, KY and TN. The stores have 16 to 25 tanning beds.

 

L.L. Bean (856-222-3027) is planning to open stores in Albany, NY and MA during 2008 and two units next year in CT. The company plans to open three stores in 2008, eight in 2009 and eight in 2010. The company also operates stores in MD, NH, NJ, and VA.

 

Raving Brands (404-844-3225) and Hungry Ventures, LLC are planning to open 24 Boneheads Grilled Fish & Piri Piri Chicken restaurants in southern CA during 2007. Boneheads offers fire-grilled entrees including mahi mahi, tilapia, salmon, shrimp and piri piri chicken with price points averaging $10 or less.

 

Palmer’s Deli & Market (515-274-4004) is planning to open a location in Ankeny, IA at the intersection of First Street and Ankeny Boulevard during May 2007. The store will be a prototype for expansion in other Midwest markets, including Omaha, NE; Kansas City, KS or Minneapolis, MN during the next four years. The 5,400 sq.ft. Ankeny location will focus on eat-in and take-out evening meals, in addition to lunchtime staples, with 150 seats and a patio. Plans call for midwestern expansion by 2010. The company currently operates three locations throughout IA.

 

Offerdahl’s Eat Fresh, Inc. (954-423-8101) is planning to open 50 Offerdahl’s Café Grill locations by 2010. The restaurants include The Specialty Grill, which features grilled steak and chicken over rice, salad and pasta bowls, as well as The Bakery Café, featuring baguettes, pastries, bagels, soups and sandwiches.

 

Rising Roll Gourmet (770-326-6606) is planning to open its first Orlando, FL location near the Florida Mall in a 3,100 sq.ft. space. The company currently operates more than 20 locations throughout the Southeast, CO and TX. The franchised restaurants offer sandwiches, soups and salads.

 

Assured Pharmacy, Inc. (949-222-9971) is planning to open five locations during 2007 in the West Coast. The company is also planning to expand into AZ, NV and TX. The company currently operates five stores: two in CA, one in Seattle, WA and two in Portland, OR. The stores use 800 sq.ft. to 1,200 sq.ft. and strictly carry pharmaceuticals catering to pain management patients.

 

American Signature (866-274-6631) is planning to open 10 Rooms Today locations in the Philadelphia, PA market. This year, the company opened five stores in the area, including Moorestown, NJ; Langhorne, PA and Lansdale, PA. In addition, the company converted Value City Furniture stores to Rooms Today stores in Allentown, PA and Bear, DE. This month, the company will open its sixth Philadelphia-area location in Plymouth Meeting, PA and is planning to open another unit in Northeast Philadelphia. The Rooms Today stores occupy about 50,000 sq.ft. with 40,000 sq.ft. of selling space. The merchandise focuses on contemporary home furnishings. American Signature operates Value City, American Signature and Rooms Today stores in 134 locations.

 

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (336-658-4000) is planning to open a store in Port Orchard, WA during winter 2007. The store will be located at the intersection of State Route 16 and Sedgwick Road, occupying 117,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates 27 locations in WA, with stores under construction in South Tacoma and Federal Way.

 

Green Cactus Mexican Grill (516-781-4900) is planning to franchise its concept. The company currently operates 10 locations throughout Long Island, NY. The quick casual Mexican restaurants offer burritos, tacos and an unlimited salsa bar.

 

Melt, Inc. (949-707-0456) is planning to open Melt Gelato & Crepe Cafe restaurants in GA, IL, MA, NY and WA in 2007. By the end of this year, the company plans to open locations in AZ, northern CA, CT, FL, MO and OH. The stores offer Italian gelato and sorbetto, crepes, gourmet Italian café and smoothies.

 

Red Ribbon (213-380-0864) is planning to open bakeries in NJ and NY, including locations in Woodside, Queens, NY and Bergenfield, NJ. Most recently, the company opened a store in Jersey City, NJ. The company currently operates more than 150 locations in the Philippines and CA.

Morton’s Restaurant Group (312-923-0030) is planning to open a Morton’s The Steakhouse in Cincinnati, OH next year. The restaurant will be located at the Carew Tower at the intersection of Fifth Street and Vine Street. The company is also planning to open locations in Anaheim, CA; San Jose, CA; Woodlands, CA; Coral Gables, FL; Houston, TX and in Macao, China. The company operates 71 steakhouses throughout the U.S., Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong.

 

Neiman Marcus, Inc. (214-761-2410) is planning to open seven Neiman Marcus stores by 2010 including the suburbs of Boston, MA and North Shore, Long Island, NY. The company is also remodeling key locations and opening stores in new markets, such as Boca Raton, FL and San Antonio, TX. In addition, the company is planning to open more Last Call outlet stores during the next five years, with a goal of reaching 30 total stores. The company currently operates 36 Neiman Marcus stores nationwide, two Bergdorf Goodman locations in Manhattan, NY and 18 Last Call outlets.

 

Wawa, Inc. (610-358-8058) is planning to open 51 Wawa locations in VA by the end of 2006 and 90 VA stores by 2010. This month, the company will open a convenience store with 16 gas pumps in Williamsburg, VA at the intersection of Merrimac Trail and Pennimal Road.

 

The TJX Cos., Inc. (508-390-3000) is planning to open a T.J. Maxx store during spring 2007 in Genoa, MI on Grand River Avenue. The company will be renovating a former Kroger in the Grand River Plaza and opening a 28,000 sq.ft. store in May 2007. Its new location will be coanchored with Elder-Beerman.

 

GameStop, Inc. (817-424-2000/2195) is planning to open 400 stores this year. In the third quarter of this year, the company opened 81 stores, including 40 in the U.S. The company also closed 40 stores, including 19 in the U.S.

 

McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurants, Inc. (503-226-3440) is planning to open 11 restaurants in 2007. The company’s most recent openings are locations in Boca Raton, FL; Burbank, CA and Cincinnati, OH. The company acquired The Boathouse restaurants and will also expand that concept next year.

 

Mothers Work, Inc. (215-873-2200) is planning to open Destination Maternity superstores and Mimi combination stores during the coming years. The company plans to expand Destination Maternity by 40 to 50 stores nationwide and to expand the number of Mimi stores to between 70 and 80 nationwide. In fiscal 2007, the company plans to open 15 to 20 locations, including seven to 12 multi-brand stores. The company operates 810 stores and 731 leased department locations. Mothers Work, Inc. trades as Motherhood Maternity, A Pea in the Pod, Mimi Maternity and Destination Maternity.

 

Chipolte Mexican Grill (303-595-4000) plans to open 95 to 105 locations next year, of which 10% of the growth will be in new markets. The chain operates 530 quick-serve restaurants nationwide serving burritos and tacos.

 

The Great American Food Chain, Inc. (214-880-0275) is planning to open 12 Kokopelli Fresh Mexican Grill restaurants in the Detroit, MI area. Eight developers have committed to opening 70 restaurants during the next three years. The company acquired a 90% interest in Kokopelli Franchise Co., LLC in August, adding the concept to its portfolio, which includes Spikes Boneyard Grill.

 

RARE Hospitality International, Inc. (303-432-0047) is planning to open 32 to 34 LongHorn Steakhouse restaurants and four Capital Grille locations during 2007. The company currently operates 268 locations. The Capital Grille opened two restaurants during the third quarter of 2006, bringing the total number in operation to 26. The company also operates 32 Bugaboo Creek Steak House restaurants.

 

Granite City Food & Brewery, Ltd. (952-215-0660) is planning to open Granite City restaurants throughout 2007 and 2008. This year, the company has opened six locations, most recently in Roseville, MN at the Rosedale Center last month. The company plans on opening its seventh location of the year in Madison, WI this month. The company operates 17 of the upscale casual dining restaurants, offering traditional and regional food and handcrafted beers.

 

Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) is planning to open 19 locations by 2008. The company recently closed all of its existing Henry’s Farmers Market locations in AZ and three Wild Oats stores. The company operates 115 natural foods stores in 24 states and British Columbia, Canada. The company’s markets include Wild Oats Natural Marketplace, Henry’s Farmers Market, Sun Harvest and Capers Community Markets.

 

Friendly Ice Cream Corp. (413-543-2400) is planning to open 12 Friendly’s restaurants in the Raleigh-Durham, NC market, with the first location slated to open next year. In the third quarter of this year, the company opened one franchise location and two company-operated restaurants were re-franchised. The restaurants serve sandwiches, entrees and ice cream desserts in more than 530 company and franchised restaurants throughout the Northeast.

 

Havertys Furniture Cos., Inc. (404-443-2900) plans to open a 50,000 sq.ft. store at the Madison Plaza in Huntsville, AL. The site is across from Madison Square Mall. The furniture store will occupy a space formerly used by Food World and plans to open by May 2007. Madison Square Mall is a 932,452 sq.ft. project anchored by Dillard’s, JCPenney, Parisian, McRaes/Belk, Sears and Steve and Barry’s University Sportswear. Haverty is a full-service home furnishings retailer with 118 stores in more than 78 cities across 17 states in the Southern and Midwestern regions. In related news, a grandson of the Havertys Furniture family recently opened his third FurnitureXpress (404-364-8098) in Chamblee, GA.  The first unit opened in April at a location in Carrollton, followed by an opening in Dekalb County, GA.  The FurnitureXpress stores are taking locations in heavily vacant centers and will relocate when the landlord has found a long-term replacement tenant.

 

BJ’s Restaurants, Inc. (714-848-3747) is planning to open up to 13 BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery locations during 2007. Most recently, the company opened a 7,500 sq.ft. freestanding restaurant in Reno, NV last month at the Summit Sierra Shopping Center. The location includes a microbrewery that produces the company’s handcrafted beers. The Reno location is the company’s 11th store opening in 2006. Nine potential locations have been secured with signed leases or purchase agreements for 2007, with four currently under construction. The company also has 15 signed letters of intent for potential openings in 2007 and 2008. BJ’s Restaurants operates 55 restaurants in AZ, CA, CO, NV, OR and TX under the names BJ’s Restaurant & Brewery, BJ’s Restaurant and Brewhouse and BJ’s Pizza & Grill. The restaurants offer deep-dish pizza, salads, sandwiches, soups, pastas, entrees and desserts.

 

Jo-Ann Stores, Inc. (330-656-2600) is planning to open 26 stores in 2007. This year, the company opened 20 Jo-Ann superstores and five traditional Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft stores. The company operates 642 traditional stores and 172 superstores in 47 states.

 

Winco Foods (208-377-0110) plans to open a 95,380 sq.ft. store at the Eagle Promenade shopping center in Eagle, ID. The chain of large-scale supermarkets operate approximately 60 stores in CA, ID, NV, OR and WA. The stores utilize spaces of 90,000 sq.ft. to 100,000 sq.ft. with a selection of groceries, fresh meat and produce, fresh bakery, bulk foods and a deli, while operating 24 hours a day. The company is employee-owned.

 

Dollar General (615-855-4000) plans open 300 locations next year, while closing 400 units. The discount general merchandiser operates approximately 8,276 stores in 34 states.

 

Sport Clips, Inc. (800-872-4247) named Wellington Franchise Systems as its area developer for southern CA. The franchisee plans to open 125 locations in Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Four leases have been signed in Orange County and letters of intent were inked for three sites in the Inland Empire. The company expects to open 10 to 15 units annually. Sport Clips is a 360-unit chain of hair salons catering to men with a sports theme.

Jack in the Box, Inc. (858-571-2121) is planning to open 40 to 45 company-owned and franchised Jack in the Box locations and 80 to 90 Qdoba Mexican Grill restaurants in fiscal 2007. The company is looking to open 75 to 100 Qdoba restaurants annually. In the fourth quarter of this year, the company opened 17 Jack in the Box restaurants and five Quick Stuff convenience stores. Qdoba opened 71 company-owned and franchised restaurants this year. The company operates and franchises more than 2,000 Jack in the Box locations in 17 states, as well as 50 Quick Stuff stores and 300 Qdoba restaurants in 40 states.

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (804-378-5005) is planning to open locations in 2007 and 2008. In the fourth quarter of this year, the company opened three stores in Los Altos, CA; Milwaukee, WI and Redmond, WA and relocated one store in Atlanta, GA. In the first quarter of fiscal 2007, the company opened two stores in Tigard, OR and West Orange, NJ and plans to open a location in Seattle, WA and to relocate a store in Dallas, TX this month. In addition, Whole Foods Market signed eight store leases averaging 57,000 sq.ft. in San Jose, CA; Boise, ID; Kildeer, IL; Indianapolis, IN; Nashua, NH; Cary, NC; Dallas, TX and Salt Lake City, UT.

The Steak n Shake Company (317-633-4100) anticipates opening approximately 15 company-owned restaurants and at least seven franchise units in fiscal 2007. The company operates 477 Steak n Shake restaurants in 20 states, including 48 franchised units. The full-service, casual dining restaurants have drive-thru windows and are open 24 hours a day.
