99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) is planning to open more 99 Cents Only locations throughout TX this year. Overall, the company plans to increase its store opening rate throughout the existing markets to about 10%. 99 Cents Only Stores sells closeout and regular general merchandise for 99 cents or less. With approximately 225 stores, the company sells name-brand and private-label food and beverages, health and beauty aids, household goods, toys and more. Most of the company’s stores are located in southern CA, but there are also a few in central CA, Las Vegas; NV; Phoenix, AZ and TX. The firm’s Bargain Wholesale unit distributes discounted merchandise to retailers, distributors and exporters.

 

Safeway, Inc. (925-467-3000) is planning to open Safeway supermarkets in Alexandria, VA and in Bowie, MD this year. The stores will be designed with wood-grain fixtures and halogen lighting and will offer home-meal replacements of sandwich and salad bars. Safeway currently operates approximately 1,775 stores located mostly in the western, midwestern, and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S., as well as western Canada. It also operates regional supermarket companies, including The Vons Companies, primarily in southern CA; Dominick’s Finer Foods in Chicago, IL; Carr-Gottstein Foods throughout AK; Genuardi’s Family Markets in the eastern U.S.; and Randall’s Food Markets throughout TX.

 

Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open approximately 120 restaurants this year, including at least 40 company-operated locations and 80 franchised locations. Approximately 15 company restaurants are expected to open in the first half of the year, with the balance opening in the second half. Approximately 20 to 25 franchise restaurants are expected to open in the first half of the year, with the rest slated to open during the second half. The company operates the largest casual-dining chain with about 1,670 of its signature locations across the U.S. and in 12 other countries. Its eateries are primarily freestanding locations. The menu features beef, chicken, and pork items, as well as burgers, pasta, and seafood. The chain is known for its selection of appetizers. The company owns and operates about 25% of its restaurants, while the rest are franchised.

 

Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is looking to open 17 company-owned locations this year, mostly in the second and third quarters. The company also is looking to open at least 20 franchised locations this year. Overall, the company is planning to open 90 company-owned restaurants and 347 franchised restaurants from 2006 through 2009. The company owns and operates more than 90 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout nearly 20 states, offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items, salads, soups and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units (about a quarter of its cafés), which are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.

 

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) is planning to open a 7,200 sq.ft. The Grill restaurant in Dallas, TX during the middle of the year. The site would be located adjacent to the Dallas Galleria. The restaurant will also feature a 1,000 sq.ft. patio. It will have combined seating for more than 250 guests and will offer an extensive wine list. Grill Concepts operates, licenses, and manages approximately 20 Daily Grill restaurants offering casual dining in a setting reminiscent of a classic American grill during the 1930s and 1940s. Located primarily in California, the restaurants feature such fare as chicken potpie, meatloaf and cobbler. Restaurants are also located in Washington, DC, Houston, TX; Portland, OR and Skokie, IL. Its licensed restaurants operate in shopping areas and hotels; one is located in Los Angeles International Airport. The Daily Grill concept is based on the company’s four upscale Grill on the Alley locations.

 

iSold It (626-584-0440) is planning to open over 200 iSold It locations throughout Ireland and the United Kingdom by 2010. The company said entry into both areas represents the first steps towards developing the European market and furthers the company’s international expansion.

 

Morton’s Restaurant Group, Inc. (516-627-1515) is planning to open a 7,400 sq.ft. Morton’s restaurant located on West Big Beaver Road in downtown Troy, MI. The restaurant will be the company’s second MI location. The restaurant will have a different design than other locations with a more subdued décor, an open atmosphere, a more spacious lounge, as well as light fixtures as opposed to recessed illumination. Opening is slated for March. In the dining area, the carpeting will change to tea leaf green from dark blue and the room will have exposed lighting fixtures, with colored paint replacing the typical white. Morton’s Restaurant Group operates approximately 70 Morton’s of Chicago locations in such cities as Atlantic City, NJ; Dallas, TX; Los Angeles, CA; New York, NY; and Chicago, IL. The restaurants serve steak, lobster, and veal in an upscale setting featuring background music by Frank Sinatra. Morton’s Restaurant Group also operates four moderately priced Bertolini’s Authentic Trattorias.

 

Acapulcos Restaurant (978-834-0000) is planning to open Acapulcos restaurants in Quincy and Weymouth, MA. The additions will bring the number of Acapulcos restaurants throughout MA to 12. The Weymouth restaurant will be located on Main Street in a space currently occupied by Playoffs.

 

Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) is planning to open a Costco store at a center located at the intersection of Highway 60 and Port Washington Road in Grafton, WI. The center will be situated on a land area of 75 acres and will have 15 to 18 tenants. Costco Wholesale is the largest wholesale club operator in the U.S. The company currently operates approximately 460-plus membership warehouse stores serving 45 million cardholders throughout 37 states and Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan and the United Kingdom, primarily under the Costco Wholesale name. Stores offer discount prices on about 4,000 products, ranging from alcoholic beverages and appliances to fresh food, pharmaceuticals and tires. Certain club memberships also offer products and services such as car and home insurance, mortgage and real estate services, and travel packages.

 

La-Z-Boy, Inc. (734-242-1444) is planning to open 45 to 50 New Generation stores. La-Z-Boy sells its recliners, chairs, sofas, tables and modular seating units through more than 60 company-owned stores, almost 335 La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, and nearly 370 in-store galleries at furniture dealers, department stores, and other outlets. La-Z-Boy also makes office and wood furniture and supplies furniture for the hospitality and health care industries.

 

Saladworks, Inc. (610-825-3080) is planning to open a 2,888 sq.ft. Saladworks location at Hamilton Commons, a center located on Black Horse Pike in Mays Landing, NJ. Opening is slated for March. The company also is looking to open a 2,500 sq.ft. location at The Pavilion at Lansdale located on South Broad Street in Lansdale. Opening is slated for the summer. Overall, the company is looking to be operating approximately 250 locations by 2010. Saladworks operates a chain of more than 70 quick-service restaurants that specialize in salads and soups. Located primarily in NJ and PA, most of the stores are operated by franchisees.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open Whole Foods Market supermarkets in Chevy Chase, MD and Fairfax City, VA this year. The company currently operates approximately 175 stores throughout 30 U.S. states, Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for more than two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,500 items in four lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into related businesses, such as nutritional supplements.

 

Harris Teeter, Inc. (704-845-3100) is planning to open as many as nine Harris Teeter supermarkets throughout the Washington, DC area this year. Harris Teeter operates approximately 150 supermarkets, mostly in NC, but also in five other southeastern states. Most of the upscale regional chain’s grocery stores feature niceties such as sushi bars, gourmet delis and cafes. Harris Teeter operates six stores in northern Virginia and has plans to expand in the competitive Washington, D.C. market and the nearby suburbs. To that end, the upscale grocery chain plans to add at least a dozen stores in northern VA during the coming years.

 

Carlson Cos., Inc. (763-212-1000) is planning to open a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant at CenterPlace in Greeley, CO. Opening is slated for late spring this year. The 5,100 sq.ft. restaurant will be located between the Outback Steak House and Red Robin along the U.S. 34 Bypass, east of 47th Avenue. Overall, the company is planning to open 50 T.G.I. Friday’s locations this year and 100 during the coming two years. Carlson’s restaurant conglomerate includes the 750-unit T.G.I. Friday’s chain. The restaurants operate locations worldwide, including 40 outlets throughout the United Kingdom and 60 countries.

 

The Learning Experience (973-539-5392) is looking to open more The Learning Experience locations this year. The company currently operates over 50 locations throughout the northeastern U.S. The company operates locations throughout metro NY, including the five boroughs, Westchester, Rockland, Suffolk and Nassau, NY; all of NJ; metro Philadelphia, PA; MI and VA. The centers occupy spaces of 10,000 sq.ft. to 14,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, outparcels and endcaps with adjacent playgrounds of 5,000 sq.ft. The company prefers land areas of one to three acres and lease terms from 15 years to 17 years. The company prefers turnkey or build-to-suit opportunities. The company also is looking to expand throughout GA and NC.

 

Ryan’s Restaurant Group, Inc. (864-879-1000) is planning to open nine restaurants, including three potential relocations. Ryan’s Restaurant Group owns approximately 300 Ryan’s restaurants primarily in the Midwest and southeastern U.S., as well as nearly 50 Fire Mountain locations. Its family-oriented eateries offer a variety of steaks, as well as chicken, seafood and burgers. The chain is known for its Mega Bar buffet, which features salad items, soups, cheeses, hot meats, vegetables, hot rolls, and fresh-baked cookies and other desserts, all served from self-service islands scattered throughout the dining area.

 

Giant Food, LLC (781-380-8000) is planning to open as many as nine Giant Food supermarkets throughout the Washington, DC area this year. Giant Food operates 190-plus Giant Food and Super G supermarkets. It is the dominant supermarket chain in the Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC markets; it also operates in the most populous areas of DE, NJ and VA. About 85% of the stores have full-service pharmacies and 16 have Toys “R” Us toy departments. The company also operates its own dairy, beverage bottling, and ice cream plants.

 

Ruby Tuesday, Inc. (865-379-5700) is planning to open 55 to 60 company-owned Ruby Tuesday locations, as well as 35 to 40 franchised restaurants. The company operates and franchises approximately 850 casual-dining restaurants throughout 42 states, Washington, DC, Puerto Rico and 13 foreign countries. The full-service eateries offer a varied selection of American and ethnic menu items, including fajitas, pasta, ribs, seafood and steak. Other items include appetizers, burgers, and desserts. More than 575 Ruby Tuesday locations are company-owned; most of its franchised units are jointly owned partnerships in which Ruby Tuesday has a minority stake. The company also has a small but growing number of international franchises. The company operates 609 Ruby Tuesday restaurants, while domestic and international franchisees operated 196 and 44 restaurants, respectively.

 

Urban Outfitters, Inc. (215-564-2313) is planning to open 32 to 35 Urban Outfitters stores this year. Long term, the company is looking to expand into Chicago, IL; Atlanta, GA; the Midwest and in California. The company currently operates approximately 170 Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie and Free People clothing stores. The company operates locations nationwide, in Canada and the United Kingdom and sell casual clothes, accessories, gifts, housewares and shoes. Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie also distribute catalogs and sell their fashions online.

 

Ollie’s Bargain Outlet (717-657-2300) is planning to expand further into PA. The company currently operates stores throughout DE, MD and PA and recently opened two locations in Pottsville and Belle Vernon, PA, as well as locations in Clearfield, State College and Oil City, PA. The chain also is expanding departments such as food and toys to increase its appeal to women. Currently, stores average 39,000 sq.ft. and range from 28,000 sq.ft. to 51,000 sq.ft. For expansion, the company is focusing on sites of at least 46,000 sq.ft.

 

Burlington Coat Factory Warehouse Corp. (609-387-7800) is planning to open a Burlington Coat Factory store by the end of this fiscal year. The company currently operates approximately 367 retail stores offering current, brand-name clothing at less than the standard retail price. Although it is one of the nation’s largest coat sellers, it also sells bath items, children’s apparel and furniture, gifts, jewelry, linens and shoes. The company operates under such names as Burlington Coat Factory, Cohoes Fashions, Luxury Linens, MJM Designer Shoe and Super Baby Depot in 42 states.
