Who's Opening & Where Jack in the Box, Inc. (858-571-2121) is planning to open 45 to 55 company-owned and franchised Jack in the Box restaurants, including 13 to 15 locations with new Quick Stuff convenience stores, as well as 85 to 95 company-owned and franchised Odoba restaurants. The company currently operates and franchises over 2,000 of its flagship hamburger outlets throughout 17 states, primarily in the West and Southwest. The chain offers standard fast-food fare like burgers, fries and soft drinks, along with salads, tacos and breakfast items. More than 1,550 locations are company-owned while the rest are franchised. In addition to its mainstay burger business, Jack in the Box runs a chain of nearly 180 Qdoba Mexican Grill fast-casual eateries through its Qdoba Restaurants unit.
Captain D’s, Inc. (615-391-5461) is planning to double its growth for Fiscal 2006 to 40 units, including the chain’s first international operation. Captain D’s is a leading quick-service seafood chain with more than 500 locations throughout approximately two dozen states, primarily in the South, as well as overseas. Its menu features fried and broiled fish, shrimp, and chicken, as well as French fries, hush puppies, and corn on the cob. The company operates more than 300 of its restaurants, while the rest are owned by franchisees.
Hallmark (816-274-4721) is looking to open locations throughout regional malls, super regional malls and lifestyle centers anchored by department stores. The Hallmark stores occupy spaces of 3,200 sq.ft. to 4,500 sq.ft.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc. (407-236-0556) is planning to open 11 to 15 restaurants this year, including six to eight company-owned and five to seven franchised locations. The company is the nation’s largest chain of high-end steak houses in terms of number of restaurants. Its 90 company-owned and franchised restaurants are located in approximately 30 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and Taiwan. The menu features steak dinners, fresh seafood and an extensive wine list.
Bakers Footwear Group, Inc. (314-621-0699) is planning to open 30 stores and remodel 25 locations this year. The mall-based vendor of women’s shoes and accessories operates approximately 220 stores throughout 36 states, with nearly 30 stores doing business under the Wild Pair banner. Bakers Footwear sells dress, casual, and sport shoes, as well as boots, sandals, and accessories, targeting women ages 12 to 29. Private labels account for the majority of company sales.
Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open approximately 1,800 Starbucks stores on a global basis in fiscal 2006. Throughout the U.S., Starbucks plans to open approximately 700 company-operated locations and 600 licensed locations. In international markets, the company plans to open approximately 150 company-operated stores and 350 licensed stores. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops throughout five countries, mostly in the US, while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S. with more than 100 shops. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.
Famous Footwear (720-344-4821) is planning to open more locations this year. The stores occupy spaces of 4,500 sq.ft. to 6,000 sq.ft. in regional malls and lifestyle centers; 6,500 sq.ft. to 8,000 sq.ft. in power and strip centers. Typical leases run five years with three, five-year options. The company currently operates over 900 locations throughout 50 states.
Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Inc. (510-594-2100) is planning to open as many as 20 to 28 Peet’s Coffee & Tea stores during 2006. The company currently operates approximately 90 coffee shops throughout seven states, Peet’s offers customers more than 30 types of coffee, including more than 20 blends. Its teas run the spectrum from India black to herbal blends. The stores also offer items such as biscotti, mugs and brewing equipment. Most of the company’s outlets are located in CA, while others can be found in CO, IL, MA, OR, TX and WA. In addition, Peet’s sells products through specialty channels such as mail order and the Internet. The company also sells its coffee wares through retail grocery stores.
Brinker International, Inc. (972-980-9917) is planning to open a Chili’s Grill & Bar restaurant at Blakeney, a 270-acre multi-use development two miles outside of Interstate 485 in Charlotte, NC. Brinker International operates more than 1,000 Chili’s locations. The restaurants offer southwestern-style dishes, such as fajitas, margarita grilled chicken, and its popular baby back ribs. In addition to Chili’s, Brinker operates the Italian-themed Romano’s Macaroni Grill and the Mexican-flavored On The Border Mexican Grill & Cantina. Its smaller chains include Maggiano’s Little Italy, Rockfish Seafood Grill and Corner Bakery Cafe.
Taco Del Mar Franchising Corp. (206-624-7060) is planning to open Taco Del Mar locations in downtown Dallas and Rockwall, TX next month; in west Fort Worth during early April and in South Arlington, TX during May. Taco Del Mar Franchising operates a chain of approximately 170 quick-service Mexican restaurants throughout more than 10 western states, Alaska and Canada. The fresh-Mex eateries specialize in tacos and burritos made with fresh beef, chicken, fish, and veggie fillings. The company will open about 20 new units in western Canada, co-branded with Mac’s Convenience Stores. Expansion is also taking place on the eastern U.S. coast.
La-Z-Boy, Inc. (734-242-1444) is planning to open 45 to 50 format stores this year, with approximately 20 of those being new stores and the remainder being relocations or remodels. La-Z-Boy sells its recliners, plus chairs, sofas, tables and modular seating units through more than 60 company-owned stores, almost 275 independent La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, and nearly 335 in-store galleries at furniture dealers, department stores and other outlets. La-Z-Boy also makes wood furniture such as desks, cabinets, and bedroom items and licenses its name for use on furniture for the health care industry. Its brands include La-Z-Boy, Bauhaus USA, Hammary, Lea, and Kincaid.
Longs Drug Stores Corp. (925-937-1170) is planning to complete its new Patterson, CA distribution center, open or relocate approximately 20 to 25 stores and remodel up to 40 stores this year. Longs Drug Stores currently operates about 470 stores throughout the western U.S. and HI. The company stores add local flavor by carrying specialty items popular in the neighborhoods they serve. The company also specializes in selling items such as cosmetics, food, greeting cards and over-the-counter medications. |
