Who's Opening & Where


Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open hundreds of Wal*Mart Asda stores throughout the United Kingdom this year. Nationwide, the company is planning to open between 550 to 600 stores during the coming fiscal year, including 270 to 280 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations and 220 to 230 international retail outlets. The expansion will add 60 million sq.ft. of retail space to the chain’s holdings. The company also is moving towards opening retail banking units in its stores. Wal*Mart also is planning to open 15 to 20 Neighborhood Market locations and 30 to 40 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Max & Erma’s Restaurants, Inc. (614-431-5800) is planning to open as many as seven Max & Erma’s restaurants this year, including one or two company-owned locations and five franchised restaurants. Max & Erma’s Restaurants operates approximately 79 casual, family-style restaurants in Akron, Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Dayton and Niles, OH; Indianapolis, IN; Detroit, Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids and Lansing, MI; Pittsburgh and Erie, PA; Crestview Hills, Lexington and Louisville, KY; Chicago, IL; Charlotte, NC; Atlanta, GA and Norfolk and Virginia Beach, VA. The company also franchises 23 restaurants in Chillicothe, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, Sandusky and Wilmington, OH, the Ohio Turnpike; St. Louis, MO; Green Bay, WI; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA; Huntington, WV and throughout IN. Its restaurants are typically freestanding units with each sporting a collection of local memorabilia. Known for its gourmet hamburgers and bathtub sized sundae bar, the chain serves a variety of moderately priced menu items, including chicken, pasta, salads and steak dishes.

 

Aspen Dental (315-454-6000) is planning to open locations throughout the Mid-Atlantic states, New England and OH and WV. The stores occupy spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. to 4,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations and endcap units. The company currently operates 80 locations throughout seven states.

 

Subway Real Estate Corp. (203-878-2791) is looking to open locations nationwide. The sub shops occupy spaces of 1,200 sq.ft. in traditional sites, but can range from as small as 300 sq.ft. in excess of 2,000 sq.ft. The company currently operates more than 23,000 locations worldwide.

 

The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is planning to open as many as 21 Cheesecake Factory restaurants during the year, including four Grand Lux Café locations. Two additional restaurant openings are currently planned for the third quarter and nine openings are currently scheduled  for the fourth quarter. The company currently operates more than 103 casual-dining restaurants, offering about 200 menu items ranging from sandwiches and salads to steaks and seafood. Each restaurant has a unique design. In addition to its flagship concept, the company operates five Grand Lux Cafes, licenses three bakery cafes, and sells its cheesecakes to grocery stores and foodservice operations.

 

Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (757-321-5000) is planning to open an 8,000 sq.ft. Dollar Tree store at a 24,000 sq.ft. center on Interstate Drive in Bloomington, IL. Area retail includes Wal*Mart. Dollar Tree currently operates more than 2,800 discount stores throughout 48 states, selling a changing mix of housewares, toys, seasonal items, food, health and beauty aids, gifts, and books all priced at $1. Dollar Tree Stores are located in high-traffic strip centers anchored by mass merchandisers and supermarkets, as well as in small towns. In recent years, Dollar Tree has begun opening larger stores from 10,000 sq.ft. to 15,000 sq.ft.

 

The UPS Store (858-455-8800) is looking to open more locations nationwide this year. The stores, which specialize in retail shipping, postal and business services, occupy spaces of 800 sq.ft. to 1,800 sq.ft. in supermarket-anchored strip centers, retail corridors or freestanding locations. The company also will open locations in urban and downtown areas, suburban and rural areas and in non-traditional locations such as college campuses, convention centers, military bases, hotels and kiosks.

 

Golden Corral Corp. (919-781-9310) is planning to launch a new, multi-ethnic concept this month when it opens a location on Boardman Poland Road in Boardman, OH. The pavilion-style restaurant, a first for the company, will feature cooking stations offering Asian, Italian, Mexican and American foods, as well as a salad bar. Chefs will man the cooking stations, preparing each customer’s orders from scratch. Golden Corral Corp. currently operates 125 restaurants and 350 franchised locations throughout 40 states. The chain serves a variety of steak, chicken, and pork entrees along with its Golden Choice Buffet, which offers hot meats, pasta, pizza and fresh vegetables. Golden Corral units also feature a Brass Bell Bakery serving fresh baked breads, rolls, cookies and brownies.

 

Smart & Final (323-869-7750) is planning to open locations throughout AZ, CA, NM and NV. The stores occupy spaces of 16,000 sq.ft. to 20,000 sq.ft. and the company prefers land areas of two acres. The company will acquire, lease, build-to-suit or ground lease. Its nearly 240 non-membership warehouse stores stock, on average, 8,000 items, including groceries, paper products, cleaning supplies, and restaurant equipment in bulk sizes and quantities. The stores operate under the Smart & Final and United Grocers Cash & Carry tradenames in urban and suburban areas throughout AZ, CA, ID, NV, OR and WA, as well as northern Mexico.

 

Wendy’s International, Inc. (614-764-3100) is planning to open more locations nationwide this year, as well as refranchising 250 to 450 Wendy’s restaurants during the coming two years. The company currently operates approximately 9,800 restaurants worldwide, with about 78% of the locations franchised. Wendy’s restaurants offer burgers and fries as well as alternative items such as baked potatoes, chili and salads. In addition to the company’s core concept, Wendy’s owns Tim Hortons, the Canadian-based coffee and baked-goods chain with more than 2,700 locations (most of them franchised), and Baja Fresh Mexican Grill with approximately 295 quick-service restaurants.

 

Papa Gino’s (781-467-1200) is looking to open locations throughout New England this year. The restaurants, which specialize in quick service Italian, occupy spaces of 3,000 sq.ft. to 4,000 sq.ft. in freestanding locations, endcaps and inline spaces. Preferred demographics include a population of 30,000 within three miles earning $40,000 as the average household income.

 

Guess?, Inc. (213-765-3100) is planning to open a 4,900 sq.ft. Guess? Outlet store at Woodburn Company Stores, a center located off Interstate 5 at

Woodburn exit 271 in Woodburn, OR. Opening is slated for later this month in the center’s 24,000 sq.ft. expansion. Guess? sells its lines through approximately 290 retail and outlet stores, to department stores, through more than 240 licensee stores in about 40 countries, and on its Web site.

 

Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is planning to open a Barnes & Noble bookstore at the River Hills Mall located at the intersection of Highway 22 and Highway 14 in Mankato, MN. Opening is slated for March 2007. The company currently operates about 824 Barnes & Noble superstores throughout 50 states and Washington, DC. It also owns about 155 mostly mall-based B. Dalton bookstores.
