Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is planning to open a Borders Books & Music store at Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, NY. Opening is slated for the summer. Borders Group operates stores throughout all 50 states and in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Its about 1,250 retail stores include more than 470 Borders superstores, including upstate NY locations in Colonie, Clifton Park and Saratoga Springs, about 700 mall-based Borders Express stores, and more than 35 UK-based Books etc. shops. To lure customers, the superstores have literary events and promote a customer-friendly environment with comfortable seats and cafes; they also sell music, videos, and DVDs.

 

Tandy Leather Factory, Inc. (817-496-4414) is planning to open Tandy Leather stores in Raleigh, NC and Lubbock, TX this month. These locations are the first of 12 planned store openings this year. The Raleigh store will be located on Old Wake Forest Road, while the Lubbock store will be located on Avenue Q. Tandy Leather Factory makes and distributes leather goods and related products, such as leatherworking tools, buckles and belt supplies, leather dyes, saddle and tack hardware, do-it-yourself craft kits, suede lace, western-hat trim and fringe. The company operates 30 wholesale distribution centers in the U.S. and Canada. Its retail leathercraft division operates more than 52 retail stores and sells to leatherworking hobbyists via catalogs.

 

Longs Drug Stores Corp. (925-937-1170) is planning to complete its new Patterson, CA distribution center, open or relocate approximately 20 to 25 stores and remodel up to 40 stores this year. Longs Drug Stores currently operates about 470 stores throughout the western U.S. and HI. The company stores add local flavor by carrying specialty items popular in the neighborhoods they serve. The company also specializes in selling items such as cosmetics, food, greeting cards and over-the-counter medications.

 

CBRL Group, Inc. (615-444-5533) is planning to open as many as 21 Cracker Barrel restaurants during fiscal 2006 and defer opening dates for some new units in early fiscal 2007. The company also is looking to open 20 to 22 Logan’s Roadhouse restaurants this year. The company currently operates more than 540 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store restaurants throughout about 40 states, which are known for their country kitsch, rustic decor and down-home cooking. The eateries offer mostly standard American fare, such as chicken, ham, and roast beef dishes; the restaurants are also popular breakfast spots. Each Cracker Barrel location features a retail area where patrons can buy hand-blown glassware, cast iron cookware, and woodcrafts, as well as jellies and old-fashioned candies. CBRL also owns about 131 company-operated Logan’s Roadhouse locations and franchises about another 24 restaurants in roughly 20 states.

 

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is planning to open a 132,000 sq.ft. Cabela’s store in Boise, ID during the summer. The store will be located in the Franklin Towne Plaza center near the junction of Interstate 184 and Interstate 84 off the Franklin Road exit. The company currently operates 14 locations nationwide. The company also is planning to open Cabela’s locations in La Vista, NE; Gonzales, LA; Glendale, AZ; Richfield, WI and Hazelwood, MO this year, as well as locations in Reno, NV; Wheat Ridge, CO; East Rutherford, NJ; East Hartford, CT and Hoffman Estates, IL during 2007. The stores include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping, and other outdoor activities. The company also sells merchandise online and has an outdoors show on ESPN2.

 

Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc. (407-236-0556) is planning to open a 7,500 sq.ft. Ruth’s Chris steakhouse in Columbia, SC. Opening is slated for Spring 2007. The company also is looking to open restaurants in Charleston and Myrtle Beach, SC by the end of this year or early next year. The company is the nation’s largest chain of high-end steak houses in terms of number of restaurants. Its 86 company-owned and franchised restaurants are located in about 30 states, as well as Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong, Puerto Rico and Taiwan. The menu features steak dinners, fresh seafood, and an extensive wine list.

 

Dunkin’ Brands, Inc. (781-737-3000) is planning to open between eight and 10 Baskin Robbins stores throughout the United Arab Emirates this year. The company currently operates 71 locations in the UAE alone. The company has more than 12,000 quick-service eateries, including Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin-Robbins and Togo’s. With about 6,100 shops in 30 countries (4,400 of which are in North America), Dunkin’ is the world’s leading chain of doughnut shops. Baskin-Robbins is a leading seller of ice cream and frozen snacks with its more than 5,400 outlets, about half or which are located throughout the U.S. Dunkin’s Togo’s shops, with more than 400 West Coast units, serve a variety of made-to-order sandwiches. About 1,100 locations offer a combination of the company’s brands.

 

Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open approximately 1,800 stores globally during fiscal 2006, including about 1,300 throughout the U.S. Nationwide, Starbucks plans to open approximately 700 company-operated locations and 600 licensed locations. Internationally, the company plans to open approximately 150 company-operated stores and 350 licensed stores. Starbucks operates and licenses more than 8,500 coffee shops throughout more than 30 countries. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas and CDs. Starbucks operates more than 5,200 of its shops throughout five countries, mostly in the U.S., while licensees operate more than 2,800 units, primarily in shopping centers and airports. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S. with more than 100 shops. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter location in Lake Park, FL during 2007. The store will be situated on a land area of 37 acres at the intersection of Silver Beach Road and Congress Avenue. Nationwide, the company is planning to open between 550 to 600 stores during the coming fiscal year, including 270 to 280 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations and 220 to 230 international retail outlets. The expansion will add 60 million sq.ft. of retail space to the chain’s holdings. The company also is moving towards opening retail banking units in its stores. Wal*Mart also is planning to open 15 to 20 Neighborhood Market locations and 30 to 40 Sam’s Club warehouse stores. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
