Who's Opening & Where


Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open a restaurant at the intersection of Beaufort and Linden streets in Normal, IL this fall. The location will be part of the $2.1 million, three-level development at the site of the former Jimmy John’s. This will be the first Cosi in IL outside of the Chicago suburbs. Other IL locations are planned for Bloomington, Champaign, Peoria, Springfield and possibly Decatur. The company operates and franchises more than 100 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout about 15 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items, including its bagel-inspired Squagels, salads, soups, and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units, which account for about a quarter of its cafés and are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.

 

Tweeter Home Entertainment Group, Inc. (781-830-3000) is planning to open five concept stores this year and will add elements of the new format to three existing locations. The prototypes feature a concierge desk, functional vignettes, a design center and other interactive elements to help demonstrate whole-home solutions. The next location is slated to open in the Buckhead section of Atlanta, GA this August. Tweeter also plans to open concept stores in Chula Vista, CA; East Plano, TX and in Henderson, NV. In addition, elements of the concept stores will be added to existing Tweeter locations in Boca Raton, FL; Cool Springs, TN and Tysons Corner, VA. The company sells mid- to high-priced audio and video equipment in nearly 160 stores in 22 states under the banners Tweeter, Sound Advice, hifi buys, Showcase Home Entertainment and Hillcrest High Fidelity. Video equipment such as TVs, VCRs, and DVD players account for about 55% of sales. Other offerings include home stereo equipment, car stereos, satellite radios, digital video recorders, and iPods and MP3 players. Customers can also buy products online from Tweeter.

 

White Hen Pantry, Inc. (800-726-8791) is planning to open 10 stores this year and at least 15 locations per year in 2007 and beyond. The company is a franchised chain of convenience stores that has been serving Chicago, IL and Boston, MA for 41 years. White Hen Pantry is predominantly franchisee-owned and operated with more than 265 stores.

 

Pier 1 Imports, Inc. (817-252-8000) is planning to open approximately 40 Pier 1 Imports stores in fiscal 2007. The company sells about 4,000 items, imported from more than 40 countries, through about 1,260 Pier 1 Imports and Pier 1 Kids stores in the U.S., Puerto Rico, Canada, and Mexico. Pier 1 stores offer a wide selection of indoor and outdoor furniture, lamps, vases, baskets, ceramics, dinnerware, candles, and other specialty products. Many of the products are handcrafted; the company favors natural materials such as rattan and wood.

 

Office Depot, Inc. (561-438-4800) is planning to open an Office Depot store at the Weston Road Shopping Center located on Weston Road in Davie, FL. The space was formerly occupied by Winn-Dixie. Office Depot paid $1.7 million for the store at a bankruptcy auction for Winn-Dixie. The company sells office supplies through more than 1,100 company-owned and licensed locations worldwide. The big box retail stores, which number more than 1,000 in the U.S. alone, sell to both consumers and small and medium-sized businesses. In addition to typical office supplies, its stores offer computer hardware and software, office furniture, art and school supplies, and printing and copying services. Office Depot also sells goods through catalogs and call centers, the Internet, and a contract sales force.

 

Trader Joe’s Co., Inc. (626-599-3700) is planning to open its first Pittsburgh, PA store this fall in the East Liberty section of the city. The location is near an existing Shop ‘n Save supermarket. With about 250 stores in 20 mostly West and East Coast states, the company offers upscale grocery fare such as health foods, organic produce, and nutritional supplements. To keep costs down, its stores have no service departments and average about 10,000 sq.ft. The company’s specialty is its line of more than 2,000 private-label products, including beverages, soup, snacks, and frozen items.

 

Filene’s Basement Corp. (617-348-7000) is planning to open three stores this fall. The locations include a 38,000 sq.ft. store at the Harvard Park shopping center in Warrensville Heights, OH; a 45,000 sq.ft. store in Springfield, PA and a 30,000 sq.ft. store in Cockeysville, MD. The off-price retailer is slated to open a 38,000 sq.ft., two-level store at 497 Boylston Street in the Back Bay area of Boston, MA this fall. The company runs its Boston flagship store and about 26 other Filene’s Basement stores in eight states, including IL, MA, NY and Washington, DC. The stores offer off-price men’s and women’s apparel, home goods, and accessories. Filene’s Basement buys most of its name-brand merchandise from department stores or apparel vendors with overruns or out-of-season stock.

 

El Dorado Furniture (305-624-9700) is planning to open a location at the intersection of State Road 7 and Southern Boulevard in Palm Beach County, FL. The 110,000 sq.ft. space was formerly occupied by Home Depot. El Dorado bought the site in 2005 for $10 million. Opening is slated for the fall. The company currently operates nine stores in Broward and Miami-Dade counties. The company carries furniture at the low, medium and high price points.

 

Foodtown International, Inc. (732-287-2400) acquired the following two former Winn-Dixie stores in a bankruptcy auction. The company will open Foodtown stores at Jacaranda Square on North Pine Island Road in Plantation, FL and at Carriage Hills Plaza in Davie, FL. The stores will be the first Foodtown locations in FL. Opening is slated for this September.

 

Rapid Refill Ink International Corp. (877-880-4465) is planning to open eight to 10 Rapid Refill stores in Clark and Cowlitz counties of WA during the coming five years. Rapid Refill Ink currently operates over 40 stores throughout 12 states. The company specializes in manufacturing and refilling ink cartridges.

 

Appliance World and Home Theater (303-940-4834) is planning to open a 19,628 sq.ft. store at the Village at Flatiron Crossing located in Broomfield, CO. Opening is slated for this month in a space formerly housing Organized Living. It will be the company’s third location and will feature dozens of models of Viking, Sub-Zero, Wolf and other appliance brands. It also will carry home-theater electronics goods. Each store will have between 500 and 700 models on display and offer contracting services. The stores will feature five functioning kitchens for live demonstrations and regularly will have area contractors, designers and others giving workshops for customers. The Flatiron Crossing store will follow openings in Aurora and south Denver, CO.

 

Dormia Mattresses (877-707-7533) is planning to open four stores this year. Opening for the stores is slated for this month. The mattress stores will be 1,200 sq.ft. outlets, all located east of the Mississippi River, and will house the company’s branded mattresses, branded sheets, pillows and mattress pads. The company operates 255 stores, mainly in malls.

 

The Baby’s Room, Inc. (630-652-0600) is planning to expand its USA Baby concept to 150 stores in large markets, and adding another 150 stores in smaller markets with populations between 200,000 and 700,000 in order to hit the 300-store mark in 10 years. The company prefers locations in power and strip centers that front major thoroughfares. Preferred area retail includes supermarkets, maternity stores and baby/children’s clothing stores. USA Baby opens between eight to 12 stores per year. The company currently operates more than 70 franchised stores in 26 U.S. states, as well as a handful of locations in Mexico. The stores sell baby and children’s furniture, such as cribs and dressers, linens, and strollers made by a variety of manufacturers.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open a Whole Foods store in Eugene, OR this fall. The company plans to open approximately 25 stores per year. The company currently operates 180 stores throughout 30 U.S. states; Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for more than two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,500 items in four lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children known as Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into related businesses of nutritional supplements.

 

The Kitchen Collection, Inc. (740-773-9150) plans to open 10 to 12 stores annually. The company typically opens outlet stores in markets with a Spanish clientele. The Kitchen Collection sells discounted brand-name kitchenware, small electrical appliances, and related accessories through about 195 Kitchen Collection and Gadgets & More stores in 40-plus states, as well as through the company’s Web site. Possibly anticipating the outlet mall development slowdown, Kitchen Collection has been experimenting with regional mall stores for the past 10 years. Later this year, the retailer will roll out a comprehensive prototype that is a bit flashier than its more basic but well-organized outlet mall stores. The retail is also examining power strip centers and ethnic markets. The stores also carry private label merchandise, including the Hamilton Beach and Proctor-Silex product lines owned by The Kitchen Collection’s parent company NACCO Industries, and are primarily located in factory outlet malls nationwide. The newer Gadgets & More test store format features higher-end housewares; its eight locations are found in traditional enclosed malls.

 

54th Street Grill and Bar (816-455-9008) recently opened a location at the Green Mount Crossing center located in St. Louis, MO. The company currently operates nine locations on the western edge of MO. The new eatery has a red brick exterior and a wood-trimmed interior stocked with local sports memorabilia, old-fashioned advertisements, toys and movie posters. The company, which is planning to open a location every six months, also is looking to open additional restaurants in Glen Carbon and Wentzville, MO.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Neighborhood Market store at Pompano Marketplace on South Federal Highway in Pompano Beach, FL. The store, acquired from Winn-Dixie in a bankruptcy auction, will be the start of the company’s launch for the Neighborhood Market concept in south FL. Wal*Mart paid $625,000 for the Pompano lease, outbidding Fresh Market and Bealls. The company also is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter store in Uniontown, PA. The site may include a gas station. Wal*Mart currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Off The Grill (615-771-8020) is planning to open as many as eight restaurants this year and into 2007. One area development deal includes 20 locations to be built during the coming three years. The sites typically occupy spaces of 2,100 sq.ft. in endcap spaces. The company currently operates 13 locations.

 

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to expand into DE. The company is looking to open a 14,820 sq.ft. store in Dover, DE. The company also is planning to open a 14,800 sq.ft. Walgreens store at the intersection of Tibbets Wick and Youngstown-Warren Road in McKinley Heights, OH. Walgreen operates about 5,250 stores in 45 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics and groceries. More than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.

 

Golfsmith International Holdings, Inc. (512-837-8810) is planning to open between 10 and 12 Golfsmith stores this year and between 14 and 16 in 2007. The stores typically range in size from 15,000 sq.ft. to 20,000 sq.ft. The company sells its products through its catalogs, Web site, and over 52 golf superstores throughout 13 states. The company’s stores sell private-label and namebrand golf equipment, accessories, and related paraphernalia and offer such services as swing analysis.

 

Wild Oats Markets, Inc. (303-440-5220) is planning to open between 10 and 12 stores this year. Wild Oats operates approximately 113 full-service stores throughout 24 states and British Columbia, Canada. Its stores provide natural, organic, and traditional grocery items, as well as environmentally-friendly household products. The stores operate under the Capers Community Market, Henry’s Farmers Markets, Sun Harvest Farms (in TX), and the Wild Oats Natural Marketplace names. It also has bakeries, coffee and juice bars, and massage therapists in most stores.

 

Cuffy’s Co., Inc. (508-398-4228) recently opened four Cuffy’s of Cape Cod stores, including locations in Orleans, West Dennis, West Yarmouth and Bourne, MA. The openings brought the company’s store count to eight. The 15,000 sq.ft. flagship West Dennis store and the West Yarmouth store are located along Route 28; the Bourne store is located near the Bourne Bridge and the 7,000 sq.ft. Orleans store was formerly occupied by Juice Bar. Cuffy’s sells its own line of sweatshirts, T-shirts and other items designed by in-house artists. Other locations are in South Yarmouth, West Dennis and Chatham, MA and Newport, RI. T-shirts range in price from $5 to $16. Sweatshirts range from less than $20 to about $40.

 

Gap, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open 10 Forth & Towne stores in the following five new markets: Atlanta, GA; Houston, TX; Los Angeles, CA; Seattle, WA and the San Francisco Bay area of CA. The stores target female shoppers over 35 years of age and offer four different sub-brands within its stores in sizes two through 20. Gap operates more than 3,000 stores worldwide. Other chains include GapBody, GapKids, and babyGap. All Gap clothing is private-label merchandise made specifically for the company.

 

Goody’s Family Clothing, Inc. (865-966-2000) is planning to open a Goody’s store at the Sedalia Crossings Shopping Center located in Sedalia, MO. Opening is slated for October. The company operates about 380 small department stores throughout 21 states, mainly in strip malls in the southeastern and Midwestern U.S. The stores sell clothes, shoes, accessories and gift items for the whole family. The stores brands include Dockers, Levi’s, NIKE, Reebok, and Skechers, as well as its own labels, which account for about a third of sales.

 

Old Navy, Inc. (650-952-4400) is planning to open an Old Navy store this summer at the Stadium Retail Center, a 700,000 sq.ft. center situated on a land area of 52 acres at the intersection of Airport Way and the Highway 120 Bypass in Manteca, CA. Old Navy operates a chain of about 900 family clothing stores in North America, offering items under its own brand name at discounted prices. Products include men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories. Old Navy is a division of Gap Inc. The chain plans to add about 200 stores by 2007 and has extended its brand to include maternity and women’s plus-size apparel, as well as accessories and personal care products.

 

Federated Department Stores, Inc. (513-579-7000) is planning to open a Macy’s store at a space formerly occupied by Foley’s at Temple Mall in Temple, TX. Opening is slated for September. Federated operates seven regional divisions: Macy’s East, Macy’s Florida, Macy’s Midwest, Macy’s North, Macy’s Northwest, Macy’s South, and Macy’s West, as well as the upscale Bloomingdale’s chain. The stores sell men’s, women’s, and children’s apparel and accessories, cosmetics, and home furnishings, among other things. The retailer also operates more than 700 bridal and formalwear stores.

 

Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) is planning to open stores throughout Canada, its first international market. The first opening is slated for next year. The company currently operates more than 870 bakery-cafes throughout approximately 35 states. Its locations, which operate under the Panera and Saint Louis Bread Company banners, offer made-to-order sandwiches built using a variety of artisan breads, including Asiago cheese bread, focaccia, and its classic sourdough bread. Its menu also features soups, salads, and gourmet coffees. In addition, Panera sells its bread, bagels, and pastries to go. The company also is starting to offer flatbread pizzas. About 310 of its locations are company-operated, while the rest are owned by franchisees.

 

The Loop Pizza Grill (904-268-2609) is planning to open a restaurant in Mount Pleasant, SC. The company currently operates five corporate-owned locations in the Jacksonville area and seven franchises. As part of a five-year expansion plan, the company plans to add four restaurants this year in AL, GA and NC. An additional 70 locations are under construction or under contract in the southeastern U.S.

 

CEC Entertainment, Inc. (972-258-8507) is planning to open 25 to 30 Chuck E. Cheese locations a year. CEC Entertainment operates the Chuck E. Cheese’s chain of pizza parlors, with more than 522 locations throughout the U.S. and in Canada. The restaurants, which are especially popular for birthday parties, feature dining-room entertainment provided by robotic characters, arcade games, and other activities targeting families with young children. The menu includes a variety of pizzas, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. CEC Entertainment owns about 475 of the pizza and fun joints, while the rest are franchised.

 

Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (303-595-4000) is planning to open 80 to 90 restaurants this year. Chipotle Mexican Grill operates a chain of about 500 quick-casual Mexican eateries in more than 20 states. Customers can build a 1-1/4 pound burrito or taco from a lineup that includes chicken, steak, barbecue or free-range pork, as well as beans, rice, guacamole, and various other veggies and salsas. It also serves chips and salsa, beer, and margaritas. Just a handful of the restaurants are franchised, while the rest are company-owned. Chipotle is 65%-owned by hamburger giant McDonald’s.

 

Care Pharmacies, Inc. (703-414-5430) is planning to open 10 to 12 franchisees per year. Care already added two pharmacies to its group in the past six months, most recently in Fairfax, VA.

 

Unique Pizza and Subs Corp. (412-209-0657) is planning to open six new and 18 converted locations throughout the Austin, TX area by the end of 2007. The company also is planning to open locations in Atlanta, GA; Boston, MA; Milwaukee, WI; Norfolk, VA and Pittsburgh, PA.

 

Phat Fashions, LLC (212-391-9443) is planning a multiple store rollout nationwide. The company currently operates only one Phat Farm and Baby Phat freestanding boutique in the U.S. on Prince Street in the SoHo section of New York, NY. Its goods are sold at department and specialty stores.

 

Massage Envy (602-889-1090) is planning to open more locations this year. The company, which operates more than 355 stores throughout 29 states, has plans to open 1,200 or more stores of 3,000 sq.ft. in the future.

 

Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (450-662-3272) is planning to expand throughout the FL Gulf Region and in LA. Alimentation Couche-Tard is the third-largest convenience store operator in North America and Canada’s third-largest retailer with nearly 5,000 outlets under the Circle K, Couche-Tard, Dairy Mart, Mac’s, and various other banners. Couche-Tard is also Canada’s largest convenience store chain. The company sells gas at more than 3,000 of its convenience stores. In Quebec, Couche-Tard owns the Dunkin’ Donuts franchise and operates more than 80 shops there.

 

Environmental Home Centers (206-682-7332) acquired Environmental Building Supplies of Portland, OR, with plans to eventually add more stores in the northwest and in CA. The company is looking to open large anchor stores in major metropolitan markets and smaller satellite stores in smaller markets. The stores specialize in selling sustainable harvested wood flooring and cabinets and environmentally-friendly paints and finishes.

 

Escape Enterprises, Ltd. (614-224-0300) is planning to open six Steak Escape locations in CA and MS. Escape Enterprises operates the Steak Escape quick-service restaurant chain, with more than 180 franchised locations in about 30 states. The chain has its roots in mall-based food courts, but it is focused on expanding its freestanding locations. While known for their cheesesteak sandwiches, the eateries also serve cold cuts sub sandwiches, salads, and a variety of sides. The company intends to open up to five locations in Mexico.

 

Dunkin’ Brands, Inc. (781-737-3000) is planning to open as many as 30 Baskin-Robbins stores throughout the San Antonio, TX market during the coming four years. All of the stores will carry a new, brighter look. The existing 13 stores in the San Antonio market will also be receiving a new look. Nationwide, the company expects to open 600 freestanding locations and will rehab all 2,500 of its existing stores throughout the country. The company has more than 12,000 quick-service eateries, including Dunkin’ Donuts, Baskin-Robbins and Togo’s. With about 6,100 shops in 30 countries, 4,400 of which are in North America, Dunkin’ is the world’s leading chain of doughnut shops. About 1,100 locations offer a combination of the company’s brands.

 

Lenny’s Sub Shops (901-753-4002) is planning to open 25 franchised locations throughout MI this year. Sub Nation, LLC will open five Lenny’s in southeastern MI, including the Ann Arbor and Lansing areas. Family First Corp. will open 15 restaurants in Kalamazoo, Kent and Calhoun counties, and TREC Development, LLC will open five locations in the Detroit metro area. All three franchisees expect to open their first restaurant in the third quarter of this year.
