Who's Opening & Where Houlihan’s Restaurants, Inc. (913-901-2500) is planning to open as many as 60 Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar restaurants during the coming two years. Houlihan’s Restaurants operates and franchises approximately 86 casual eateries throughout about 20 states and in Mexico, most of them operating under the Houlihan’s Restaurant & Bar name. The restaurants offer a variety of main dishes, including burgers, pasta, and steaks, as well as several appetizers and salads. The company also operates a small number of other dining concepts, including Bristol Bar & Grill, Darryl’s, Devon, Chequers and J. Gilbert’s Wood-Fired Steaks.
Total Wine & More (301-795-1000) is planning a major expansion throughout southern FL, with a focus on such markets as Kendall, Coral Gables, Aventura and the Weston/Pembroke Pines area. The first Miami-Dade store is likely to open either later this year or early next year. The stores carry a selection of 8,000 kinds of wine, 2,000 types of spirits and 1,000 different beers. The company currently operates approximately 40 locations throughout DE, FL, NC, NJ, SC and VA. The stores typically occupy spaces of 20,000 sq.ft. and have the appearance of a small supermarket with aisles dedicated to particular styles of wines.
Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000) is planning to open three Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery locations this year, three in 2007 and five restaurants in 2008. The company is looking to open new prototype locations. The new design will make the stainless steel brewing equipment visible to diners. Another major change is the addition of color, with touches of blue and sage green brick instead of the previous design of muddy browns and ambers. The prototype includes more branding elements, with ceiling banners emblazoned with the names of beers. Rock Bottom Restaurants currently operates approximately 90 eateries and brew pubs throughout the western and midwestern U.S., including about 55 Old Chicago restaurants that feature deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza and more than 110 different brands of beer. Its nearly 35 brew pub locations, including the Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery, the ChopHouse & Brewery and the Walnut Brewery, offer patrons fish, pasta, and meat, plus a variety of microbrews produced on the premises. The company also owns two Sing Sing dueling piano bars.
The Melting Pot Restaurants, Inc. (813-881-0055) is planning to open as many as 25 The Melting Pot restaurants this year. The company currently operates and franchises a chain of more than 100 restaurants throughout approximately 36 states. The company specializes in themed, multi-course fondue meals for couples. Longo’s Supermarkets (905-673-3099) is planning to open a store at the intersection of Yonge and Richmond Streets in Toronto, Ontario, Canada next month and is looking to open a 50,000 sq.ft. store on the Burlington-Oakville border during 2007. The company currently operates 14 locations throughout the Toronto, Ontario area.
The Holland, Inc. (360-694-1521) is planning to open a prototype Burgerville restaurant in a former unit this year and is looking to open two to four locations next year. The company currently operates approximately 40 Burgerville fast-food restaurants throughout OR and WA. The Burgerville menu offers hamburgers, fried halibut and other items. The company also owns Beaches, a chain of three casual-dining restaurants, and noodlin’, a fast-casual concept that specializes in pasta and salad dishes.
JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open 27 stores this year, and will try and double that pace between 2007 and 2009. About 90% of the stores are expected to open in open-air projects. New stores are also planned for major metro markets such as Houston and Dallas, TX; Denver, CO; Phoenix, AZ; Minneapolis, MN and Chicago, IL. JCPenney also is looking to renovate 25 of its stores during the coming four years. The retailer runs more than 1,000 department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
Cutter’s Mill (610-635-0912) is planning to open a 6,000 sq.ft. store at Princeton Shopping Center. Opening is slated for July. The stores offer natural, organic and holistic nutritional options, along with unique accessories and supplies for pets. The company also is looking to open two additional stores this year and anticipates opening a total of ten stores by 2008. The concept includes a focus on educating consumers on alternative nutritional options for their pets. Cutter’s Mill currently operates locations in New Britain, PA and Cherry Hill, NJ.
Euromarket Designs, Inc. (847-272-2888) is planning to open approximately five Crate & Barrel stores this year. The company also is looking to expand throughout Canada, England and Germany. The company currently operates approximately 145 stores, including nearly a dozen outlet stores, throughout about 24 U.S. states and Washington, DC. About a third of the merchandise, which includes furniture and housewares, is unique to the chain. Crate & Barrel issues eight catalogs annually to some 15 million households and sells merchandise on its Web site.
Port City Java, Inc. (910-796-6646) is planning to open as many as 100 Port City Java locations this year. In addition to hot, chilled, and flavored coffees Port Java offers teas, sodas, waters, espresso, cappuccino, iced drinks, frappes, freezes, shakes, fresh-squeezed lemonade and Italian sodas. Port City Java operates approximately 50 locations, which are located in the U.S., Asia, South America, and Europe.
Christopher & Banks Corp. (763-551-5000) is planning to open approximately 85 to 100 stores in 2007. The openings will include 35 to 40 Christopher & Banks stores; 40 to 45 C.J. Banks stores and up to 15 Acorn stores. Approximately 35 stores are planned to open in the second and third quarters. Christopher & Banks sells moderately priced private-label women’s fashions throughout approximately 705 stores in 45 states. Sportswear accounts for two-thirds of sales; the rest comes from sweaters and accessories. Its C.J. Banks stores offer specialty apparel in sizes 14W and up. The chains cater to working women 40 to 60 years of age. In 2004 the company purchased the upscale women’s fashion 21-store Acorn chain from womenswear retailer Gilmore Brothers Inc.
Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open 17 company-owned Cosi locations, as well as 20 franchised restaurants. The company owns and operates more than 94 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout approximately 20 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items, salads, soups, and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units, which are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart in south China’s Hainan Province. It will be the company’s 68th unit in China. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including approximately 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal-Mart also has operations in Europe and South America.
Saks, Inc. (212-940-5080) is planning to open Saks Fifth Avenue stores in China and Macau. The company entered into a licensing and consulting agreement with Roosevelt China Investments Corp. to develop and operate the stores. The first store is tentatively slated to open in 2008 in the historic Bund district of downtown Shanghai. The store is expected to be approximately 300,000 sq.ft. and will cover four floors. Saks, Inc. currently operates Saks Fifth Avenue Enterprises, which consists of 55 Saks Fifth Avenue stores, 50 Saks Off 5th stores and saks.com. The company also operates 38 Parisian stores and 57 Club Libby Lu specialty stores.
