Who's Opening & Where


The Finish Line, Inc. (317-899-1022) opened its first Paiva store in Austin, TX.  The premium, athletic specialty store offers a blend of fitness and fashion apparel, footwear and accessories.  Over the next 12 months, a total of 15 Paiva stores are expected to open in a variety of U.S. markets.

 

Trader Joes Co, Inc. (626-599-3700) is planning to open a Trader Joes on South California Boulevard in Walnut Creek, CA.  The 24,621 sq.ft. building also will include a branch of Berkeley-based Elephant Pharmacy, scheduled to open in about a year.  The building had been occupied by Albertsons, which closed in March.

 

Jack in the Box, Inc. (858-571-2121) is planning to add 10 Jack in the Box restaurants in the St. Louis, MO area within the next 12 months.  The new restaurants will be located in both MO and IL.  Both restaurants will be co-branded with the company’s Quick-Stuff convenience stores, as well as a branded gas station.  The company operates 53 restaurants on the MO side of the river and 14 in the Metro East.  The restaurants offer standard fast-food fare such as burgers, fries, and soft drinks, along with salads, tacos, and breakfast items. Jack in the Box, Inc. also runs a chain of 250 Qdoba Mexican Grill fast-casual eateries through its Qdoba Restaurants unit.

 

Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open Whole Foods Market stores in Sugar Land, TX and near the Galleria on Past Oak Boulevard in Houston, TX.  The company now has four sites in Houston, TX.  The 78,000 sq.ft. Galleria-area location will be the Houston flagship.  The 55,000 sq.ft. Sugar Land site will be in the Lake Pointe Town Center and both are slated to open in 2007.  Whole Foods Market currently operates 180 stores throughout 30 states, Washington, DC and in Canada and the United Kingdom.  The stores offer food and other items that are free of pesticides, preservatives and sweeteners.

 

Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is planning to open a 146,000 sq.ft. Home Depot store on the Cytec Industries site off of West Main Street in Stamford, CT. Area retail includes Super Stop & Shop.  The company is interested in developing all or part of the 19 vacant acres on the 35-acre Cytec site.  The company operates more than 2,000 stores in all 50 U.S. states, Washington, DC and throughout Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

 

Jones Apparel Group, Inc. (215-785-4000) is opening Barneys New York Co-Op stores at Somerset Collection in Troy, MI and at The Westchester in White Plains, NY this fall.  Both of the locations range between 6,000 sq.ft. and 6,500 sq.ft. and will be Barneys’ 11th and 12th freestanding Co-Op stores to date.  Barneys New York is a luxury retailer with flagship stores in Chicago, IL; Boston, MA and New York, NY.  Barneys also operates three regional full-price stores, 10 Co-Op Barneys New York stores, 12 outlet stores and two semi-annual warehouse sale events.

 

Great Escape Theaters (812-945-4006) is opening a 12-screen, 2,000-stadium seating Great Escape Theater at the Kyova Tri-State Mall located on U.S. Route 60 in Ashland, KY.  Sears, Elder-Beerman and Steve & Barrys cotenant the mall.  The company is a leading independent motion picture exhibitor that owns and operates one of the fastest growing theater circuits in the U.S., with 23 locations and over 240 screens.

 

Apple Computer, Inc. (408-996-1010) is planning to open a company-owned retail Apple store at the Kahala Mall located in Oahu, HI.  Apple launched its line of company-owned retail stores in 2001, and has steadily expanded the chain to about 150 stores in 30 U.S. states.  Apple Computer’s desktop and laptop computers include its Mac mini, iMac, and MacBook for the consumer and educational markets, and more powerful Power Mac and MacBook Pro for high-end consumers and professionals involved in design and publishing.

 

Wings Over America (843-216-7601) opened a Wild Wing Café restaurant in Garden City Beach, SC in late May.  The company has 11 restaurants under its direct ownership and another 11 franchised locations.  The locations are spread through NC, SC, TX and VA. 

 

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (210-938-8357) is planning to open a supersize H-E-B Plus supermarket next to the recently completed Kyle Parkway in Kyle, TX.  Construction will begin this summer on a tract of about 40 acres at the intersection of Interstate 35 and FM 1626 and the store will encompass approximately 150,000 sq.ft.  Opening is slated for the next summer.  The supermarkets sell a variety of general merchandise as well as groceries throughout LA and TX.

 

Big 5 Sporting Goods Corp. (310-536-0611) opened two Big 5 Sporting Goods stores during the first quarter of fiscal 2006, bringing its store count at the end of the first quarter to 326 stores.  The company has opened one new store in the second quarter to date and anticipates opening a total of three stores during the second quarter of fiscal 2006, and opening a total of approximately 20 new stores during fiscal 2006.   Big 5 Sporting Goods’ products include athletic shoes, apparel and accessories for sports such as tennis, golf, snowboarding and inline skating.

 

Steve & Barrys, LLC (516-829-4730) is opening a Steve & Barrys University Sportswear store at Washington Square Mall in Indianapolis, IN.  The company operates 130 stores nationwide, each ranging from 50,000 sq.ft. to 100,000 sq.ft.  The company specializes in clothing with college logos and carries its own lines of jeans, T-shirts, sweatshirts, button-up shirts and jackets, with all merchandise priced at $9.98 or less.

 

Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) is planning to open two Dollar General stores in Greeley, CO.  One will be opening at the Union Colony Brewery on 8th Avenue, while the other will open at Willow Station off of 23rd Avenue.  The company operates a chain of more than 8,000 locations throughout 32 states, primarily in the Midwest and southern and eastern U.S.  About a third of its stores’ goods are priced at $1 or less, while the highest-priced products go for about $35.

 

Del Taco, Inc. (949-462-9300) is opening a Del Taco restaurant in Carson City, NV.  The 2,300 sq.ft. drive-thru restaurant is planned for a parcel on a little less than an acre at the intersection of Retail Court and East College Parkway and will be located near a Wal*Mart.  The restaurant will likely open in the first quarter of 2007.  Del Taco is the number two quick-service Mexican chain in the U.S., with more than 450 locations in about 12 Western states. Its restaurants offer tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, along with traditional fast food, such as hamburgers, fries, and shakes.

 

Mango (900-150-543) has opened its first MNG by Mango store in Costa Mesa, CA.  The 5,737 sq.ft. store will joined more than 900 other stores throughout 81 countries.  The company opens 120 stores every year.  Mango plans to open locations in Century City and San Francisco, CA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX; McLean, VA and Bellevue, WA.

 

Kulhman Co., Inc. (612-338-5752) is planning to open 15 to 20 Kulhman stores throughout Boston, MA; Philadelphia, PA; Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL; San Francisco, CA; New York, NY and Washington, DC and is looking for street locations of 1,000 sq.ft. to 3,000 sq.ft.  The company is also planning to replicate the 700 sq.ft. airport unit, which recently opened at Logan International Airport in Boston, MA, at about a dozen airports.  Some 70% of Kuhlman’s clothing is comprised of shirts, but it also puts its name on blazers, skirts, sweaters, ties and trousers for men and women.  After opening its first store in August 2003, the company expects to have 100 stores by 2007. 

 

Grill Concepts, Inc. (310-820-5559) is planning to open a Grill-branded restaurant in Dallas, TX during the late summer, as part of the Galleria shopping complex.  The company also plans to open a Daily Grill restaurant in Memphis, TN, slated for 2007.  The restaurants offer upscale casual dining in a setting reminiscent of a classic American grill during the 1930s and 1940s.  The company operates 24 restaurants including four The Grill on the Alley-branded restaurants in Beverly Hills, Hollywood and San Jose, CA and Chicago, IL, as well as 20 Daily Grill restaurants in northern and southern, CA, Houston, TX; Portland, OR; Skokie, IL and Washington, DC.
