Who's Opening & Where Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open two Whole Foods stores during the second quarter of this year, and is looking to reopen the Metairie, LA store. The company also recently signed leases for stores in Chicago and Northbrook, IL; Seattle, WA; Wellington, FL; Napa and Sonoma, CA; Honolulu, HI; Philadelphia, PA; Richmond, VA and Reno, NV. The company currently operates 180 stores throughout 30 U.S. states; Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for more than two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,500 items in four lines of private-label products, such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children called Whole Kids. In addition, the company has moved into the related businesses of nutritional supplements.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open a 90,000 sq.ft. Kohl’s store in the Bosley development next to Patriot Center along West Virginia 14 in Parkersburg, WV. Opening is slated for October. The company currently operates approximately 741 discount department stores throughout 43 states. The stores offer moderately priced name-brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories and housewares are sold through centrally located cash registers.
Tumbleweed Restaurants, Inc. (502-893-0323) is planning to open approximately 21 Tumbleweed Southwest Grills locations throughout NC. The company is currently planning to open five restaurants throughout the Raleigh-Durham area. The company operates Southwestern-style restaurants throughout eight states and internationally. With more than 63 restaurants operating in the U.S. and others opening internationally, the company is concentrating on accelerating its growth over a period of 18 months. Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is planning to open a Nordstrom store at Northshore Mall in Peabody, MA. Opening is slated for 2010 and will most likely occupy the space now occupied by Macy’s. Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes and accessories through approximately 100 Nordstrom stores and about 50 Nordstrom Rack stores throughout 27 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and about 35 Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is planning to open as many as 21 Cheesecake Factory restaurants during fiscal 2006, including as many as three Grand Lux Café sites. The Cheesecake Factory currently operates more than 100 casual-dining restaurants, offering about 200 menu items ranging from sandwiches and salads to steaks and seafood. The highlight of the menu is cheesecake, which comes in about 40 varieties, including Chocolate Tuxedo Cream and Kahlua Cocoa Coffee. Each restaurant has a unique design. In addition to its flagship concept, the company operates Grand Lux Cafes, licenses three bakery cafes, and sells its cheesecakes to supermarkets and foodservice operations.

Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc. (314-423-8000) is planning to open approximately 30 Build-A-Bear Workshop stores throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as five Friends 2B Made locations, two ballpark stores and the first store in a zoo. The company also is planning to open between 20 to 25 stores throughout international markets this year. Located mainly in malls, the stores allow kids to design their own teddy bears and other stuffed animals complete with clothing, shoes and a barrage of accessories. Fred Meyer Stores, Inc. (503-232-8844) is planning to open a two-story, 180,000 sq.ft. Fred Meyer superstore at the intersection of Highway 9 and 20th Street in Lake Stevens, WA. The store would be the seventh Snohomish County location for the retailer. Fred Meyer Stores operate approximately 130 stores and offer everything from bedding and apparel to groceries, consumer electronics and jewelry.
Queen City Audio, Video & Appliances (704-391-6000) is planning to open an 11,000 sq.ft. store in Hickory, NC, as well as locations farther west and north. The store will stock major appliances such as washers, dryers and flat-panel televisions.
YUM! Brands, Inc. (502-874-8300) is planning to open more than 700 restaurants this year. The company is one of the largest fast-food franchisers in the world, trailing only McDonald’s in overall sales. Yum! Brands currently operates more than 33,000 units throughout approximately 100 countries. The company owns and operates almost a quarter of its stores and franchises most of the others. The company’s flagship brands include KFC, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Yum! also owns A&W All-American Food Restaurants and Long John Silver’s.
Smart & Final, Inc. (323-869-7500) is planning to open an 18,000 sq.ft. Smart & Final store in Hayward, CA. The store will be located at the intersection of Hesperian Boulevard and Sueirro Street near a Home Depot. The company currently operates approximately 250 non-membership warehouse stores that stock, on average, 8,000 items, including groceries, paper products, cleaning supplies and restaurant equipment, in bulk sizes and quantities. It sells in some 1,600 stores, including about 850 mall-based and outlet stores and over 730 leased spaces in department stores throughout the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico; it also sells online and through catalogs. About 90% of its merchandise is designed by the company and manufactured by third-party contractors.
Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open approximately 120 Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar locations nationwide this year, including 40 company-owned restaurants and at least 80 franchised restaurants. Approximately 15 restaurants are currently expected to open in the first half of the year, with the balance opening in the second half of the year. Approximately 20 to 25 franchise restaurants are expected to open in the first half of the year, with the remainder opening in the second half of the year. Its eateries are primarily freestanding units, while some are located in shopping areas, and sport interiors covered with local memorabilia to give each location an indigenous feel. Petco Animal Supplies, Inc. (858-453-7845) is planning to open a 14,000 sq.ft. Petco store at a space formerly occupied by Goody’s in Carbondale, IL. The store would be located in the University Place shopping center. There is expected to be an aquatic section in the middle of the store with everything else based around it. The store also is expected to feature a self-grooming and grooming area. The company currently operates approximately 1,500 stores throughout 47 states.
IKEA (610-834-0180) is planning to open a 293,000 sq.ft. IKEA store at the intersection of Interstate 595/State Route 84 and NW 136th Avenue in Sunrise, FL. Opening is slated for the summer 2007. The building will be situated on a land area of 20 acres. The store will feature 50 room settings, four complete homes, a supervised children’s play area and a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties. The company also is planning to open a store at a former shipyard location in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn, NY. This will be the first store to be opened by IKEA in the metro New York, NY market. The company recently received approvals to build a three-story, 346,000 sq.ft. mega store on the property. The company also is planning to open a store in Canton Township, MI. Opening is slated for summer. The store will be the company’s 28th in the U.S. and fourth in the upper Midwest, joining stores in Schaumberg, IL; Bloomington, MN and Bolingbrook, IL. The Canton store will feature four model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children’s play area, as well as a 250-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties and American dishes. IKEA currently operates 225 stores throughout 33 countries. Other stores slated to open in the U.S. this year include locations in Atlanta, GA; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA; Frisco, TX; and Somerville and Stoughton, MA.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to open approximately 90 Best Buy stores throughout the U.S. and Canada during its 2007 fiscal year. Of the openings, the company expects about 75 to 80 to be located in the U.S. More than half of the stores will be in the 30,000 sq.ft. format, with the remainder to be split between the 20,000 sq.ft. and 45,000 sq.ft. formats. The majority of the stores are projected to open in markets where Best Buy has an established presence. The company also expects to relocate 10 to 15 U.S. Best Buy stores during fiscal 2007. The company currently operates a chain of approximately 930 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers and appliances. Hallmark (816-274-4721) is looking to open locations throughout regional malls, super regional malls and lifestyle centers anchored by department stores. The Hallmark stores occupy spaces of 3,200 sq.ft. to 4,500 sq.ft.
JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is planning to open a 98,840 sq.ft. JCPenney store in Tech Center Ridge located at the intersection of Parmer Lane and Interstate 35 in North Austin, TX. The company also is looking to open a similar store at Southpark Meadows located at the intersection of Interstate 35 and Slaughter Lane in South Austin, TX. The company currently operates more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
California Pizza Kitchen, Inc. (310-342-5000) is planning to open a minimum of 15 California Pizza Kitchen locations throughout Japan during the coming 10 years. The first restaurant is slated to open during the fall. California Pizza Kitchen offers pizzas with a variety of unique topping combinations, including duck, barbecued chicken and grilled shrimp.
