Who's Opening & Where Starbucks Corp. (206-447-1575) is planning to open 20,000 Starbucks stores nationwide and 20,000 additional stores internationally. The company hopes to have over 14,000 stores worldwide by the close of the fiscal year ending in the fall of 2007. The company plans to expand in China, India, Egypt, Brazil and Russia, a plan that would provide it presence in 40 countries across the globe. The shops offer coffee drinks and food items, as well as beans, coffee accessories, teas, and CDs. Starbucks owns about 6,000 of its shops, which are located in 10 countries, while licensees and franchisees operate more than 4,200 units worldwide. The company also owns and franchises the Seattle’s Best Coffee and Torrefazione Italia chains in the U.S. In addition, Starbucks markets its coffee through grocery stores and licenses its brand for other food and beverage products.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) will open a Target store at The Crossing of Decatur, located at the intersection of Highway 67 and Highway 31 in Decatur, AL. Opening is slated for October 2007. The company also plans to have 2,010 SuperTarget stores operating throughout the U.S. open by 2010. The nation’s number two discount chain now operates about 1,440 Target and SuperTarget stores in 47 states. Target and its cousins, including SuperTarget, which sells groceries, and Target Greatland, have carved out a niche by offering more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise. Target also owns apparel supplier The Associated Merchandising Corp. and issues Target Visa and its proprietary Target Card.
Save-A-Lot Food Stores, Inc. (314-592-9100) is planning to open Save-A-Lot stores in Pasco and Tacoma, WA soon. The deep-discount grocery chain operates more than 1,100 stores in 42 states under the Save-A-Lot banner. About two-thirds of the stores are licensed; the rest are company-owned and operated. Save-A-Lot stores offer a limited assortment of items at prices up to 40 percent lower than conventional grocery stores. Today Save-A-Lot is a subsidiary of grocery wholesaler SUPERVALU, which bought the company in 1993.
Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) will open a Barnes & Noble store in Roanoke, VA. The store will stock close to 200,000 book, music, DVD and magazine titles and will include a café serving Starbucks coffee. Opening is slated for the summer of 2007. The company recently opened a store at First Colony Mall in Sugar Land, TX, as part of a new 1125,000 sq.ft. lifestyle expansion at the mall, and will close its existing Sugar Land location at the Sugar Land Town Center. As the number one bookseller in the country, the company operates more than 680 Barnes & Noble superstores throughout all 50 U.S. states and Washington, DC. It also owns almost 120 mostly mall-based B. Dalton bookstores. Barnes & Noble’s remaining businesses include general trade book publisher Sterling Publishing Co., and a 74 percent interest in seasonal kiosk retailer Calendar Club.
JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) will open a 103,000 sq.ft. JCPenney store on Interstate 88, between Orchard Road and Rand Road, in North Aurora, IL. Opening is slated for August 2007. The company also plans to open 150 new and relocated stores in the 2007 to 2009 period. Approximately 80% to 90% of the new JCPenney stores will adopt the off-mall format. The company is one of the largest department store, catalog, and e-commerce retailers in the U.S. The retailer runs more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S and Puerto Rico. The company currently has 25 stores open in the off-mall design.
Williams-Sonoma, Inc. (415-421-7900) will open a Pottery Barn at the First Colony Mall in Sugar Land, TX, as part of the mall’s new 1125,000 sq.ft. lifestyle expansion. Williams-Sonoma is a leading retailer of goods for well-appointed kitchens, bedrooms, and baths. Home products include bath and storage products, bedding, cookware, furniture, and tableware. The company’s retail chains, Williams-Sonoma and larger Grande Cuisine, Pottery Barn and larger Design Studio, and Hold Everything, sell wares through some 570 stores in 43 states, Washington, DC, and Canada. The company operates about 15 Williams-Sonoma outlet stores and six e-commerce Web sites, and runs an online bridal registry.

It is the first of 35 to 40 sport-themed stores planned for the greater Sacramento, CA area during the next three years. The national hair-cutting franchise markets its “Guy-Wise” stylists and casual, male-oriented atmosphere to men and boys. The company has more than 315 stores in more than 25 states (most in CO, FL and TX) offering sports-themed decor, large screen TVs in the waiting area, and ESPN and other sports programming on TVs at each station.
L.L. Bean, Inc. (207-865-4761) is planning to open two L.L. Bean stores in Mansfield and Dedham, MA during 2007 and 2008. The outdoor apparel and gear maker mails more than 200 million catalogs per year. L.L. Bean’s library includes about 10 specialty catalogs offering products in categories such as children’s, fly-fishing, outerwear, sportswear, housewares, footwear, camping and hiking gear, and the Maine hunting shoe upon which the company was built. L.L. Bean also operates half a dozen retail stores and about 15 factory outlets throughout the Northeast.
Five Guys Enterprises, LLC (703-751-6844) will open four Five Guys burger restaurants in MD. The locations include the Harford Mall in Bel Air; Crain Highway in Crofton; Boston Street in Canton and West Centre Street. Two Baltimore locations are set to open within the next month. The company currently operates 19 Five Guys restaurants in MD. Other restaurants are also located throughout CT, DE, FL, GA, MD, NC, NJ, NY, PA, SC, VA and Washington, DC.
Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. (303-664-4000) is planning to open a Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery restaurant adjacent to Muvico at the Rosemont Walk in Rosemont, AR. Other Rock Bottom Brew House restaurants can be found throughout WA, OR, CA, AZ, CO, MN, WI, IA, IL, IN, OH, PA, MA, MD, VA. Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc. operates and franchises about 120 eateries and brewpubs across the U.S., including its flagship Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery and Old Chicago pizzerias. Its brewpub locations, which also operate under such names as ChopHouse & Brewery and Walnut Brewery, offer fish, pasta, and meat, plus a variety of microbrews produced on the premises. Its pizzerias feature deep-dish, Chicago-style pizza and more than 110 different brands of beer. About 95 restaurants are company-owned, while the rest are franchised.
Dream Dinners (480-609-8554) is planning to open three stores throughout Peoria, Gilbert and Scottsdale, AZ. The company has 228 franchised stores nationwide, including eight in AZ. The national chain, popular among working families and couples, allows customers to prepare meals in an assembly-line fashion to take home, saving time and money.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart Supercenter at the intersection of U.S. 25-70 and Interstate 26 in Weaverville, NC. The store is proposed to anchor Northbridge Commons, a center planned on a land area of 86 acres. The center is slated to open in mid-2008. The company currently operates more than 6,300 stores, including some 1,200 discount stores, 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenters stores in the U.S. and ASDA in the United Kingdom, and 565 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly two-thirds of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the number one retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns a majority stake in Japanese retailer SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
National City Bank (888-622-4932) is planning to open a 3,200 sq.ft. bank on Maysville Road in Fort Wayne, IN. The bank will be the anchor tenant for a 15,600 sq.ft. center.
Tiffany & Co. (212-755-8000) will open a store on Wall Street in New York, NY in the fall of 2007 and at 15 Broad Street in the spring of 2007. The company’s specialty is fine jewelry, but it also puts its famous name on timepieces, silver, china, stationery, crystal, and other luxury items. To entice budget-minded customers to do more than window shop, Tiffany has broadened its merchandise mix to include key chains and other items that sell for less than $50. The firm sells its goods exclusively through some 150 Tiffany & Co. stores and boutiques worldwide, its Web site and catalogs.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 415 Kohl’s stores nationwide over the next four years, with 115 openings scheduled for next year. By the end of 2006, Kohl’s will operate 817 stores in 45 states. By 2010, the company hopes to reach its goal of operating more than 1,236 stores. The company currently operates 800-plus discount department stores in 41 states. Moderately priced name brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares are sold through centrally located cash registers, designed to expedite checkout and keep staff costs down. Kohl’s competes with discount and mid-level department stores.
The Neiman Marcus Group, Inc. (214-741-6911) is planning to open more Last Call outlet stores. The company currently operates 18 and plans to reach 30 by 2010. An opening is slated for Neiman Marcus in 2008 at the Topanga Mall in Canoga Park, CA. The company also plans to open eight more Neiman Marcus stores in the next three years. Neiman Marcus department stores offer high fashion, high-quality women’s and men’s apparel, accessories, fine jewelry, china, crystal and silver. The Quiznos Master LLC operates the number two sub sandwich chain, with about 4,500 quick-service Quiznos sub restaurants that are popular for their made-to-order, oven-toasted subs. Patrons can choose from a variety of signature subs, such as the Honey Bourbon Chicken, BBQ Chipotle Carved Turkey, or Honey Bacon Club. Quiznos also serves salads, soups, and dessert items. The company operates in more than 20 countries, and nearly all of the company’s restaurants are owned by franchisees.
Ted’s Montana Grill, Inc. (404-266-1344) will open a Ted’s Montana Grill at the Coastland Center in Naples, FL. Opening is slated for early 2007. Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) will open a Best Buy store in East Flagstaff, AZ as part of the Flagstaff Mall expansion plans. The biggest consumer electronics outlet in the nation, Best Buy Co., Inc. operates a chain of almost 785 stores in the U.S. and Canada, offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers, and appliances. In addition to selling products, the stores offer installation and maintenance services, technical support, and subscriptions for cell phone and Internet services. Covering an average of about 42,000 sq. ft., the big box stores are located in 49 states and five Canadian provinces.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) will open a 185,000 sq.ft. Lowe’s Home Improvement store at the Gateway Overlook, located at the intersection of Route 175 and Route 108 in Columbia, MD. The store will be situated on a land area of 13.3 acres. The number two U.S. home improvement chain, Lowe’s has more than 1,250 superstores in 49 states and has announced plans to expand into Canada in 2007. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.
Applebee’s International, Inc. (913-967-4000) is planning to open an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar on U.S. Business 218 adjacent to Wal*Mart in Waverly, IA. The company also plans to open an Applebee’s Neighborhood Grill & Bar on Boston Road in Springfield, MA. Opening is slated for January. 99 Cents Only Stores (323-980-8145) plans to increase its store opening growth rate to about 15% in fiscal 2008. These new stores are planned to open in the company’s existing markets of AZ, CA, NV and TX. The company currently operates 241 deep-discount retail stores and also operates a wholesale division called Bargain Wholesale. The company’s next two 99 Cents Only Stores will open in Yuma, AZ and Houston, TX this year. 99 Cents Only Stores sells closeout and regular general merchandise for 99 cents or less. The restaurants offer fresh, prepared-at-order chicken fingers, wings, sandwiches and salads.
Jos. A. Bank Clothiers, Inc. (410-239-2700) is planning to open at least 500 Jos. A. Bank stores throughout the U.S. in the next several years. Although the company is still best known for making tailored clothing, including suits, sport coats, dress shirts and pants, it has also added casual wear. The company sells its Jos. A.
