Who's Opening & Where


Winmark Corp. (763-520-8500) is opening Plato’s Closet stores in northern FL. Winmark Corp. franchises retail chains that buy, sell, and consign used goods at more than 800 stores. The chains sell sports gear at Play It Again Sports; children’s items at Once Upon A Child; teen apparel at Plato’s Closet; and musical gear at Music Go Round. Most operations are in the U.S., but it does have about 65 stores in Canada.

 

Banana Republic, Inc. (650-952-4400) is opening a Banana Republic store at SanTan Village, a center located in Gilbert, AZ. Banana Republic currently operates approximately 500 stores throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan. Cotenants at the center include Dillard’s, Harkins Theatres, Borders Books & Music, The Disney Store, Paradise Bakery and Chico’s.

 

Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is opening a store at the Cherry Hill Mall in Cherry Hill, NJ. One of the nation’s largest upscale apparel and shoe retailers, Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through approximately 100 Nordstrom stores and about 50 outlet stores called Nordstrom Rack in 27 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and 30-plus Façonnable boutiques, which are located primarily in Europe.

 

Raley’s, Inc. (916-373-3333) is opening a 65,000 sq.ft. Raley’s supermarket at Modesto Village I in Modesto, CA. The store will offer a drive-thru shopping option that allows customers to place orders online. Groceries will be gathered, bagged and loaded into customers’ vehicles when they arrive. Raley’s operates more than 100 supermarkets and larger-sized superstores, mostly in northern CA, but also in NM and NV. In addition to its flagship Raley’s Superstores, the company operates Bel Air Markets, Nob Hill Foods, an upscale chain in the Bay area of San Francisco, CA, and a discount warehouse chain, Food Source. Raley’s stores typically offer groceries, natural foods, liquor, and pharmacies.

 

Cabela’s, Inc. (308-254-5505) is opening stores in Wheat Ridge, CO; East Hartford, CT; Adairsville, GA; Hoffman Estates, IL; Gonzales, LA; Hazelwood, MO; Reno, NV and East Rutherford, NJ next year. The company also is planning to open a store in Montreal, Quebec, Canada during early 2008. The company currently operates 16 stores . The stores occupy spaces as large as 250,000 sq.ft. and include such features as waterfalls, mountain replicas, aquariums, and banquet and meeting facilities. Cabela’s sells footwear, clothing, and gear for fishing, hunting, camping, and other outdoor activities.

 

McDonald’s Corp. (630-623-3000) is opening a restaurant along the west side of Orchard Road in Oswego, IL. Opening is slated for late January 2007. The company operates more than 31,800 flagship restaurants serving burgers and fries in more than 100 countries. Almost 30% of its locations are company-owned, while the others are run by franchisees. While most of the company’s eateries are freestanding locations, it does have some quick-service kiosk units located in airports and retail areas. McDonald’s also owns the Boston Market fast-casual chain and has a minority interest in United Kingdom sandwich chain Pret A Manger.

 

Dollar Tree Stores, Inc. (757-321-5000) is opening a 7,606 sq.ft. store at Mountainside Plaza, a center located in Ahwatukee Foothills, AZ. The space was formerly occupied by Piano Warehouse. The company currently operates approximately 3,100-plus discount stores throughout 48 states, selling a mix of housewares, toys, seasonal items, food, health and beauty aids, gifts, and books, all priced at $1 or less. About 40% of its merchandise is imported, primarily from China; closeouts represent less than 15% of its inventory. Dollar Tree Stores are located in high-traffic strip centers anchored by mass merchandisers and supermarkets, as well as in small towns.

 

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is opening an 89,134 sq.ft. Kohl’s store at Potomac Marketplace, a 280,000 sq.ft. center located on Route 9 in Ranson, WV. Opening is slated for Spring 2007. The company also is opening a store at Market Pointe, a 500,000 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of 72nd Street and Giles Road in Papillion, NE. The company currently operates 740-plus discount department stores throughout 41 states. The company offers moderately priced brandname and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.

 

Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is opening a 45,000 sq.ft. Publix store at the intersection of St. Andrews Drive and New Salem Highway in Murfreesboro, TN. The building will be situated on a land area of 13 acres. The company also is planning to open a store at the southeast corner of Old Fort Parkway and Rucker Lane in Murfreesboro. Construction on the store is slated to begin this month. Publix Super Markets operates approximately 875 stores, with most locations in FL. The company also operates locations in AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods, and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies, and banks. The company also operates five “Pix” convenience stores in FL.

 

Max & Erma’s Restaurants, Inc. (614-431-5800) is planning to open two to three company-owned locations next year, as well as seven to eight franchised openings. Franchised locations are slated for Las Vegas, NV; Merrillville, IN; Norfolk and Virginia Beach, VA; St. Louis, MO; and Findlay and Sharonville, OH. Max & Erma’s Restaurants operates and franchises approximately 100 casual, family-style restaurants throughout a dozen states, primarily in the Midwest. Its restaurants are typically freestanding locations that sport a collection of local memorabilia. Known for its gourmet hamburgers and bathtub-sized sundae bar, the chain serves a variety of moderately priced menu items, including chicken, pasta, salads, and steak dishes. Franchisees operate about 20 locations.

 

O’Reilly Automotive, Inc. (417-862-6708) is planning to open 170 to 175 stores during the coming 18 months. O’Reilly Automotive sells aftermarket parts, automotive tools, professional service equipment, and accessories through more than 1,500 O’Reilly auto parts stores. Most locations are in MO, OK and TX. The company sells new and remanufactured auto parts such as alternators, fuel pumps, maintenance items like oil and antifreeze, accessories such as floor mats and seat covers, and a full line of auto body paint.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is opening a Wal*Mart Supercenter store at the intersection of 4th Street and Prickly Pear Avenue in Benson, AZ. Opening is slated for next month. The company also is opening a Wal*Mart Neighborhood Market store in Homewood, GA. The space was formerly occupied by Winn-Dixie. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

The Buckle, Inc. (308-236-8491) is planning to open approximately 17 stores, of which eight will be located in lifestyle centers. With about 341 mostly mall-based stores throughout 38 states, The Buckle sells mid- to high-priced casual apparel (pants, tops, outerwear, shoes, and accessories), including brand names such as Dr. Martens, Fossil, Lucky, Polo, and Silver. Denim accounts for more than 40% of sales. The Buckle operates under the names Buckle and The Buckle.

 

Ace Cash Express, Inc. (972-550-5000) is planning to open more franchised locations. Ace Cash Express operates a chain of check-cashing stores, some under the name ACE Cash Advance, that provide services for people who are unable to do business with commercial banks. For a fee, customers can cash checks, buy money orders, transfer money, and pay bills at nearly 1,600 ACE locations throughout 36 states and Washington, DC, more than 15% of which are franchised. Some ACE locations offer small personal loans, payday loans, lottery tickets, bus passes, fax-transmission services, stamps, and prepaid phone cards.

 

Steve & Barry’s, LLC (516-829-4730) is planning to open a 58,300 sq.ft. Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear store at Temple Mall located in Temple, TX. Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear, which sells every item in its stores for $19.99 or less, operates approximately 130 superstores nationwide and plans to expand to 200 locations by the end of this year. Stores range from 50,000 sq.ft. to over 100,000 sq.ft.

 

Rey’s Pizza (305-207-1711) is planning to operate as many as 50 pizzerias within 10 years. The company currently operates nine locations throughout Miami and Hialeah, FL.

 

Sbarro, Inc. (631-715-4100) announced a joint venture with India-based RTC to open 100 restaurants throughout India. The first India locations are slated to open in New Delhi next year, with 10 units opening every year over the next 10 years. The majority of the restaurants will be located within malls in major metropolitan areas such as New Delhi and Mumbai. Earlier this year, the company announced plans to open more than 75 units in regions worldwide, including Mexico, Egypt, Romania, Central America and The Bahamas. The company operates and franchises nearly 1,000 cafeteria-style Italian-food stands across the U.S. and about 30 other countries. Serving pizza, pasta entrees, and salads, Sbarro’s units are typically found in high-traffic locations, such as malls, downtown locations, and toll-road rest areas. It also has units in other food-court locations, such as airports, college campuses, and sports stadiums.

 

Ultimate Franchise Systems, Inc. (407-333-8998) has signed agreements for seven franchised locations for its Flamers Burgers & Chicken affiliation. The restaurants specialize in hamburgers and chicken sandwiches cooked over an open grill. The company operates over 40 locations nationwide. Ultimate Franchise Systems franchises and develops a number of different restaurant concepts and offers management services to growing eatery chains. It has stakes in about 10 different chains, including Central Park, Jreck Subs, Mountain Mike’s Pizza, Obee’s Subs, and Sobik’s Subs. It also has a stake in Famous Food Group, franchisor of Uncle Al’s Famous Hot Dogs, and Gator’s Dockside. In addition, UFSI has an investment in a chain of 40 wellness clinics called Beverly Hills Weight Loss.

 

Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is opening stores in Blaine, MN during spring of 2007 and in Rochester during summer 2007. The company also has stores under construction in Maple Grove, Rogers and Oak Park Heights, MN. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,250 superstores throughout 49 states and has announced plans to expand into Canada in 2007, as well as opening 150 to 160 stores nationwide. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances (for which the company has a market share of 13%) and furniture.

 

American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (724-776-4857) is planning to open as many as 25 Martin + Osa stores by the end of next year. American Eagle Outfitters sells casual apparel and accessories (shirts, jeans, shorts, sweaters, skirts, footwear, belts, bags) aimed at men and women ages 15 to 25. Virtually all of the company’s products bear its private-label brand names: American Eagle Outfitters and AE. It operates more than 850 American Eagle stores throughout the U.S. and Canada and plans to open more.

 

OSI Restaurant Partners, Inc. (813-282-1225) is opening a Bonefish Grill restaurant at Columbus Park Crossing located in Columbus, GA next spring. The center is located at the southeast quadrant of Veterans and J.R. Allen Parkway. Formerly Outback Steakhouse, OSI Restaurant Partners is an operator of casual-dining spots, with more than 1,300 locations throughout the U.S. and 20 other countries. Its 930-unit flagship concept, Outback Steakhouse, offers steak, chicken, and seafood served in an Australian-themed atmosphere. OSI also operates 200 Carrabba’s Italian Grill restaurants, which offer pasta, chicken, and seafood dishes. Its other concepts include Bonefish Grill, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Lee Roy Selmon’s, and Roy’s. More than 1,100 locations are company-owned.

 

Ross Stores, Inc. (925-965-4400) is opening a store at The Rim, a center located in northwest San Antonio, TX next month. Ross Stores operates two discount clothing chains with approximately 735 outlets. The company sells mostly closeout merchandise, including men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, at prices well below those of department and specialty stores. Although apparel accounts for nearly two-thirds of sales, the stores also sell small furnishings, educational toys and games, luggage, and gourmet foods in select stores. Featuring the Ross Dress for Less trademark, the chain targets 25- to 54-year-old shoppers from primarily middle-income households. Ross stores are located in strip malls in 26 states, mostly in the western U.S. and Guam.

 

Bass Pro Shops, Inc. (417-873-5000) is opening a Bass Pro Shops store at Gulf Coast Town Center in San Carlos Park, FL. Opening is slated for next month. The company also is planning to open locations in Olathe, KS and Independence, MO; and in downtown Memphis, TN. The company also is opening a store at Branson Landing, a center located in Branson, MO. Bass Pro Shops operates approximately 35 Outdoor World stores throughout the U.S. and Canada. The cavernous outlets sell boats, campers, equipment, and apparel for most outdoor activities and offer features such as archery ranges, fish tanks, snack bars, and video arcades. The company owns Tracker Marine (boat manufacturing) and American Rod & Gun (sporting goods wholesale) and runs a resort in the Ozark Mountains.

 

Mr. Gatti’s, Inc. (512-459-4796) signed a deal with Pizza Southeast, LLC to open two GattiTown stores and 20 traditional Gatti’s Pizza units in Knoxville and throughout TN during the coming seven years. The company operates and franchises approximately 140 pizza restaurants throughout TX and seven other states, offering pizzas and Italian-style foods. Some units incorporate a fun center featuring private party rooms, a video arcade, carousels, and bumper cars. The restaurants, 90% of which are franchised, typically provide dine-in, delivery, and carry-out services.

 

The Cheesecake Factory, Inc. (818-871-3000) is opening a 10,209 sq.ft. Cheesecake Factory restaurant in December at Dulles Town Center located in Loudoun County, VA. The company also is opening a restaurant at Stoneridge Mall in Pleasanton, CA. The restaurant will be located adjacent to Nordstrom. The Cheesecake Factory operates more than 109 casual-dining restaurants, offering about 200 menu items ranging from sandwiches and salads to steaks and seafood. The restaurant offers cheesecake in about 40 varieties. In addition to its flagship concept, the company operates seven Grand Lux Cafes, licenses two bakery cafes, and sells its cheesecakes to supermarkets and foodservice operations.

 

L.L. Bean, Inc. (207-865-4761) is planning to operate as many as 26 stores nationwide during the coming few years. The company may also look to expand throughout international markets such as Canada and Costa Rica. The outdoor apparel and gear manufacturer mails more than 200 million catalogs per year. L.L. Bean’s library includes about 10 specialty catalogs offering products in categories such as children’s, fly-fishing, outerwear, sportswear, housewares, footwear, and camping and hiking gear. L.L. Bean also operates half a dozen retail stores and about 15 factory outlets throughout the Northeast.

 

Sonic Corp. (405-225-5000) is planning to open 180 to 200 drive-in restaurants, including 150 to 160 franchised locations, during fiscal 2007. Sonic operates approximately 575 restaurants and franchises more than 2,465 locations in 29 states, primarily in the South and Southwest. The eateries offer such items as hamburgers, extra-long cheese coney dogs, tater tots, and cherry limeades. Customers order via intercom from a menu board located in each parking space and carhops deliver the food in an average of four minutes. Some locations, about 125, also offer dine-in seating and drive-thru service. Sonic also has locations in Mexico.

 

SUPERVALU, INC. (952-828-4000) is planning to open three Sunflower Market stores throughout central OH by mid-2007. Growth projections call for the operations of 50 stores throughout the Midwest within five years. The company also is planning to open a Sav-A-Lot supermarket in metro Columbus, OH and on East Main Street in Bexley, OH next year. Sunflower Market sells organic and natural foods. The company currently operates approximately 2,500 stores nationwide. SUPERVALU is also one of the nation’s largest food wholesalers, supplying about 2,200 grocery stores in 48 states with brandname and private-label goods.

 

Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open stores that are smaller than its traditional 10,000 sq.ft. to 14,000 sq.ft. locations. The company also is considering expanding into south Asia in the future, but for now growth plans are for the U.S., with a focus on the Northeast, the Carolinas, the Southwest and the West. The company expects to be operating 7,000 stores by 2010. Walgreen currently operates about 5,400 stores throughout 47 states and Puerto Rico. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales, while the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, and groceries. Walgreen usually builds rather than acquiring stores. More than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.

 

Taco Bell Corp. (949-863-4500) is planning to open three Taco Bell locations throughout the Baton Rouge, LA area. A division of YUM! Brands, Taco Bell is the operates more than 6,000 locations. The restaurants feature a wide range of Mexican-style menu items including tacos, burritos, gorditas, quesadillas, and nachos. Taco Bell units can be found operating as freestanding locations and as quick-service kiosks in such places as shopping malls and airports. Taco Bell also has about 240 locations outside the U.S. About 20% of the restaurants are company-operated, while the rest are franchised or licensed.

 

Dick’s Sporting Goods, Inc. (724-273-3400) is planning to open a total of 40 stores this year. Dick’s Sporting Goods operates approximately 255 stores throughout 34 states. The stores contain on average five smaller shops featuring sporting goods, apparel, and footwear for leisure pursuits ranging from football, golf, and cycling, to hunting and camping.

 

Golfsmith International Holdings, Inc. (512-837-8810) is opening stores at the following locations: on North Oracle Road in Tucson, AZ; on West Loop South at the Galleria in Houston, TX and on New York Street in Aurora, IL. The company sells its products through catalogs, a Web site, and about 60 golf superstores throughout 13 states. The company’s stores, averaging about 20,000 sq.ft., sell private-label and brand-name golf equipment, accessories, and related paraphernalia and offer such services as swing analysis.

 

Harris Teeter, Inc. (704-845-3100) is opening a Harris Teeter Food Market store at Bayside Marketplace, a center located on Route 54 in Selbyville, DE during spring 2007. Harris Teeter operates about 149 supermarkets, mostly in NC, but also in five other southeastern states. Most of the upscale regional chain’s grocery stores feature niceties such as sushi bars, gourmet delis, and cafes. Harris Teeter operates six stores in northern VA and has plans to expand in the Washington, DC market and the nearby suburbs. The supermarket chain plans to add at least a dozen new stores in northern VA in coming years.
