Who's Opening & Where Walgreens Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open 500 Walgreens stores during fiscal 2007, with a net increase of more than 400 stores after relocations and closings. The company has a goal to reach 7,000 stores by 2010. Walgreens currently operates approximately 5,400 stores throughout 47 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, and groceries. More than two-thirds of the company’s stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.
Urban Outfitters, Inc. (215-564-2313) is planning to open a 10,000 sq.ft. Anthropologie store on Primrose Road in Burlingame, CA. The space was formerly occupied by Chicken Chicken. Opening is slated for Spring 2007. The company operates approximately 80 namesake stores, mainly in the U.S., but also in Canada and the United Kingdom. The stores sell casual clothes, accessories, gifts, housewares, and shoes. Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie also distribute catalogs and sell their fashions online. The company’s wholesale division manufactures and distributes clothing under the Free People label to its own and about 1,500 specialty stores worldwide.
G.I. Joe’s, Inc. (503-682-2242) is opening three G.I. Joe’s stores throughout western WA during the coming months. The stores will occupy former Larry’s Markets locations in Bellevue and Kirkland next spring. A Bellingham, WA store is slated to open next month. The sporting goods and outdoor supplies retailer has about 20 locations in OR and WA. The stores carry items for outdoor activities such as camping, canoeing, fishing, hunting, snowboarding, and snow and water skiing, including apparel and footwear. It also sells trailer hardware, storage racks, radar detectors, and other automotive gear. In addition to its stores, G.I. Joe’s sells through catalogs and online.
Mothers Work, Inc. (215-873-2200) is planning to open 15 to 25 stores during fiscal 2007. Mothers Work offers mid-priced to high-end career, casual, and special occasion maternity apparel through its four chains (A Pea in the Pod, Destination Maternity, Mimi Maternity, and Motherhood Maternity). It operates approximately 1,600 stores, including about 850 mall-based and outlet stores and over 730 leased spaces in department stores in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico; it also sells online and through catalogs. About 90% of its merchandise is designed by the company and manufactured by third-party contractors.
Family Dollar Stores, Inc. (704-847-6961) is planning to open approximately 400 stores next year. Family Dollar operates about 6,100 stores throughout 44 states and Washington, DC. The stores specialize in selling items such as food, health and beauty aids, housewares, and toys, but also sell apparel, shoes, and linens. Most merchandise is priced at less than $10.
Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is opening a 46,500 sq.ft. Publix supermarket on Harding Road in Nashville, TN. The store will be part of a redevelopment of Hill Center at Belle Meade, a 117,000 sq.ft. center that will include a 58,000 sq.ft. multi-story retail and office building. The company also is planning to open stores in Goodlettsville, Murfreesboro and Bellevue, TN. A 40,000 sq.ft. Publix supermarket is scheduled to open September 2007 at the intersection of U.S. Highway 17 and Main Road in West Ashley, SC. The company currently operates approximately 875 stores, with most locations in FL. Other Publix supermarkets are located throughout AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods, and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies, and banks. The company also operates five Pix convenience stores in FL.
Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to open a 20,000 sq.ft. Best Buy store at the Prairie Crossing shopping center at the intersection of 63rd Street and Broadway in Quincy, IL. The company operates a chain of 786 stores in the U.S. and Canada, offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers, and appliances. Covering an average of about 42,000 sq. ft., the big box stores are located in 49 states and five Canadian provinces. In addition to the Best Buy brand, the company operates under the names Magnolia Audio Video (20 stores in the U.S.) and Future Shop (about 120 locations in Canada).
Moe’s Southwest Grill, LLC (404-442-8933) is opening a Moe’s Southwest Grill restaurant at the Marketplace at Tiger Point, a center located on Highway 98 in Gulf Breeze, FL. Moe’s Southwest Grill operates a chain of more than 200 quick-service eateries throughout nearly 30 states that offer standard Tex-Mex favorites, including burritos, quesadillas, and fajitas, in a quirky, fun atmosphere. The restaurants offer tofu in addition to the traditional beef and chicken. Nearly all of the company’s restaurants are operated by franchisees. The chain is owned by Raving Brands, which also runs Sprock’s Planet Smoothie concept and other franchise concepts.
Kings Super Markets, Inc. (973-463-6300) is planning to double its number of stores in five years. The regional supermarket chain operates approximately 25 upscale supermarkets in northern NJ and two stores in NY. The chain was formerly owned by United Kingdom clothing retailer Marks and Spencer.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is opening Lowe’s Home Improvement stores in Brantford, Hamilton, south Brampton and the west end of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The company also is looking to open locations in Alberta and British Columbia. The company will also open a 139,000 sq.ft. Lowe’s Home Improvement store, complete with garden center, on a land area of 31 acres at Routes 5 and 20 and Route 96A in Waterloo, NY. Lowe’s operates has more than 1,250 superstores throughout 49 states. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances and furniture.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a Wal*Mart store in Medford, WI. The company also plans to open between 270 and 280 Wal*Mart Supercenters and 15 to 20 Wal*Mart Neighborhood Markets this year. The company is also planning to open an additional Wal*Mart in Broomfield, CO, at the intersection of Sheridan Boulevard and 120th Avenue. It is the world’s number one retailer, with more than 6,300 stores, including some 1,200 discount stores, 2,000 combination discount and grocery stores (Wal*Mart Supercenters in the U.S. and ASDA in the United Kingdom), and 565 warehouse stores (Sam’s Club). It is the number also the number one retailer in Canada and Mexico. The company also has operations in Asia, Europe, and South America.
Tesco PLC (+44-1992-632-222) is planning to open 50 supermarkets in Phoenix, AZ by next fall. The name is expected to be Tesco Fresh & Easy. The company runs more than 2,700 supermarkets, supercenters and convenience stores in the United Kingdom, and in Ireland, Central Europe and Asia. Its operations include convenience and gasoline retailing (Tesco Express), small urban stores (Tesco Metro), supercenters (Tesco Extra), and financial services through Tesco Personal Finance.
The Home Depot, Inc. (770-433-8211) is opening a Home Depot store in North Auburn, CA. The 129,000 sq.ft. store will feature a garden center and will be situated on a land area of 10.8 acres. The store is slated to open in early 2008. The Home Depot, Inc. operates more than 2,000 stores nationwide and throughout Canada, Mexico, and Puerto Rico. The company targets the do-it-yourself and professional markets with a broad product assortment. It’s the largest seller of garden products in North America and also runs about 35 EXPO Design Center stores.
Unique Pizza and Subs Corp. (412-209-0657) is planning to expand along the West Coast, with a focus on San Diego, Los Angeles, Ontario, Oceanside and Sacramento, CA. The company signed a franchise agreement to open locations in San Diego, with the first unit slated to open next month. The company currently has over 200 locations in 10 states scheduled to open by the end of the year.
Five Below, Inc. (215-546-7909) is opening a 10,000 sq.ft. store at the Brandywine Square Shopping Center, a 612,000 sq.ft. center located in Downington, PA. The 10,000 sq.ft. format is double the size of most of the retailer’s existing stores and is a prototype for future expansion. The new format arranges items by category into eight departments, such as sports, media, crafts and style. The company is planning to open 15 to 20 stores next year and more than 20 in 2008, with a goal to reach 100 units within the next two to three years.
Ashley Furniture Industries, Inc. (608-323-3377) is opening an Ashley Furniture HomeStore on Boardman-Poland Road in Boardman, OH. Ashley Furniture makes and imports upholstered, leather, and hardwood furniture, as well as bedding. It has manufacturing plants and distribution centers throughout the country and overseas. It operates more than 200 Ashley Furniture HomeStores, independently owned shops that sell only Ashley Furniture products, throughout the U.S., Canada, and Japan.
Menards, Inc. (715-876-5911) is opening a 230,000 sq.ft. Menards store on M-66 in Ionia, MI. The company also has stores under construction in Big Rapids, South Haven, Saginaw and Mount Pleasant, MI. The company is also planning to open Menards stores in the Columbus area of OH, as well as throughout Celina and Marion, OH. The company will also tear down an existing Menards store and open a brand new one in its place in mid-summer 2007 in Coon Rapids, MN. The store will be 203,327 sq.ft. and will be situated on a land area of 14.65 acres. The third-largest home improvement chain in the U.S., Menards has about 210 stores in IA, IL, IN, MI, MN, ND, NE, OH, SD and WI. The stores sell home improvement products, such as floor coverings, hardware, millwork, paint and tools. Unlike competitors, all the company’s stores have full-service lumberyards.
IKEA International A/S (+46-42-267-100) is opening an IKEA store in West Chester Township, OH, just north of Cincinnati. Construction of the 339,000 sq.ft. store is scheduled to begin this fall, with the opening slated for Fall 2007. The company also is planning to open 24 new stores in the next 12 months in Germany, Sweden and the U.S. IKEA’s 30th U.S. store, and first in UT, is scheduled to open on a 22.5-acre parcel in Draper next spring. The company sells Scandinavian-style home furnishings and other housewares in more than 230 stores in 33 countries.
Barnes & Noble, Inc. (212-633-3300) is opening a Barnes & Noble at Ashley Park in Newnan, GA during March 2007. The company operates more than 680 Barnes & Noble superstores nationwide.
Rite Aid Corp. (717-761-2633) will open a 14,500 sq.ft. Rite Aid at the intersection of South Main Street and East Columbia Street in Marion, OH by the end of January 2007. The drugstore chain runs about 3,300 drugstores in 27 states and Washington, DC. Rite Aid stores fill prescriptions and sell health and beauty aids, convenience foods, and other items, including more than 2,700 private-label products. More than half of Rite Aid stores are freestanding.
Darden Restaurants, Inc. (407-245-4000) will open an Olive Garden restaurant on North Elizabeth Avenue in Pueblo, CO. The restaurant is scheduled to open in late winter of 2006 or early spring of 2007.
In-N-Out Burgers, Inc. (949-509-6200) is planning to open 10 to 11 locations next year throughout AZ, CA and NV. The company owns and operates about 200 quick-serve restaurants. The chain’s menu features just four basic items, hamburgers, cheeseburgers, the Double-Double (two patties and two slices of cheese) and French fries.
ALDI Group (+49-201-85-93-0) will open 30 to 35 ALDI supermarkets in western PA. The newest store opened in the Punxy Plaza in Punxsutawney, PA. The company operates 800-plus ALDI stores in 26 U.S. states.
Ahold USA, Inc. (781-380-8000) will open eight new and replacement Giant Food supermarkets by year’s end. The company (dba Giant-Landover) operates about 190 Giant Food and a dozen Super G supermarkets. It is number one in the Baltimore, MD and Washington, DC markets and also operates in the most populous areas of DE, NJ, and VA.
Tractor Supply Company (615-366-4600) is planning to open a 19,000 sq.ft. store in Fairview, TN. Tractor Supply Company supplies tractor parts and farm supplies (including its own private labels) such as fencing, animal feeds and medicines, garden products, riding mowers, and work clothes. With nearly 600 stores throughout 37 states and British Columbia, the stores cater to full- and part-time farmers and ranchers and to contractors.
Supervalu, Inc. (952-828-4000) is planning to open at least a dozen Jewel food stores, mainly in the outer suburbs of Chicago, IL, over the coming 18 months.
The Johnny Rockets Group, Inc. (949-643-6100) is opening a Johnny Rockets restaurant at the Del Amo Fashion Center located in Torrance, CA. The company is also opening a Johnny Rockets at George Washington University at 2000 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. The company operates and franchises about 180 restaurants in about 30 U.S. states and a half dozen other countries. Johnny Rockets serves such old-fashioned diner fare as hamburgers, malts, fries, and apple pie.

The company is the world’s number one maker of cell phones. The company’s products are divided primarily between four divisions: mobile phones, multimedia, networks and enterprise solutions.
Costco Wholesale Corp. (425-313-8100) is planning to open at least 20 new Costco stores, scheduled from now until mid-December. The company will also open a 151,000 sq.ft. Costo, complete with tire center and gasoline station, on Harbor Hill Drive in Gig Harbor, WA. Costco Wholesale Corp. is the largest wholesale club operator in the U.S. The company operates about 487 membership warehouse stores in 37 U.S. states and Puerto Rico, Canada, Japan, Mexico, South Korea, Taiwan, and the United Kingdom. Stores offer discount prices on, on average, 4,000 products, ranging from appliances to fresh food, pharmaceuticals and tires. Certain club memberships also offer products and services such as car and home insurance, mortgage and real estate services, and travel packages.
Cost Plus, Inc. (510-893-7300) is opening both a World Market store at the Galleria North shopping center in Dallas, TX, as well as a World Market store in San Antonio, TX, this year. The company is planning to open 11 stores nationwide in the third quarter. The retailer’s 270 Cost Plus World Market stores sell furniture, rugs, baskets and ceramics, as well as exotic food and beverages, and are located in 34 states.

Bevmo (480-961-9100) opened a Beverages & More superstore in Chandler, AZ, the first to be opened outside CA. A 12,000 sq.ft. Bevmo store will open at the Tempe Marketplace in Chandler, AZ next summer. With 57 Beverages & More stores open, and four under construction in CA, Beverages & More offers more than 3,000 wines, 1,500 spirits and 800 beers, as well as cigars, food, glassware and gifts. The stores also have tasting bars with an in-house wine judge.
Fogo de Chao (972-960-9533) will open a restaurant at City Center in downtown Minneapolis, MN. The company has four locations in Brazil, as well as six other U.S. restaurants in, Beverly Hills, CA, Atlanta, GA, Chicago, IL, Dallas and Houston, TX and Washington, DC. A restaurant is also slated to open in Philadelphia, PA. The steakhouse chain specializes in the Brazilian concept of churrasco, a gaucho way of slowly roasting meats over open fire pits.
The Brick Warehouse Corp. (780-930-6000) will open a 19,000 sq.ft. anchor United Furniture Warehouse store at a proposed new 42,888 sq.ft. retail center on Meridian Street in Bellingham, WA. The company operates more than 30 stores in Canada. The stores sell furniture, including living room, office and bedroom sets at discount prices.
Melt, Inc. (310-601-7907) is planning to open new Melt gelato & crepe cafes in San Francisco, CA, CT, FL, St. Louis, MO, NJ, Las Vegas, NV, Toledo, OH and Philadelphia, PA this year. The company also opened a location at the Paradise Valley Mall in Phoenix, AZ. The expansion plan is expected to drive the store count from 30 by the end of this year to 174 in 2008, with operations in 20 states. Staples, Inc. (508–253–5000) will open a 20,400 sq.ft. Staples at The Marketplace at Centerra in Loveland, CO. The center will also welcome a new tenant, with the opening of Rock Bottom Restaurants, Inc.’s (303-664-4000) 6,212 sq.ft. Old Chicago restaurant. Construction will begin in mid-October and is slated for completion next March.
Nexia Holdings, Inc. (801-575-8073) will open a 1,504 sq.ft. Black Chandelier store in The Shops at Riverwoods, located at the intersection of North Street and University Avenue in Provo, UT. The opening is slated for next month. The company is planning to open an additional 30 stores over the next five years. The company currently operates two Black Chandelier stores in Salt Lake City, UT, as well as an online store. Black Chandelier designs, produces and manufactures a majority of the items sold under the trademarks: Black Chandelier, Jared Gold, Olfactory Surrealism and Pink Chandelier.
San Francisco Oven (440-717-9450) is opening a second restaurant in El Paso, TX, on North Mesa in the new Mesita Business Park. Opening is slated for mid-November to early December. A third restaurant may open near the airport in 2008. Big O Tires, Inc. (800-622-2446) will open six Big O stores in Dayton, OH. The stores are former Tire Kingdom, Inc. locations. The company operates over 540 stores throughout the western and Midwestern states.
Designs of the Interior (847-713-2622) is planning to open 15 to 20 new DOTI stores annually, on average, with hopes of having between 200 and 250 stores throughout the country within the next 10 years. The company currently has 17 stores operating nationwide, with eight in development. New locations include Glendale, AZ; Paradise Valley, AZ; Manhattan Beach, CA; Thousand Oaks, CA; Boulder, CO; Newton, MA; Chesterfield, MO; Cincinnati, OH and West Houston, TX.

H.E. Butt Grocery Co. (210-938-8000) is opening an H-E-B Plus store at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Potranco Road in San Antonio, TX next month. Three more H-E-B Plus stores are also planned to open in San Antonio, TX during 2008, one at the former McCreless Mall; one at the former Westlakes Mall and one at the intersection of Loop 1604 and Evans Road. The company operates H-E-B Plus stores in Austin, Waco, San Juan and Corpus Christi, TX. H-E-B owns more than 300 supermarkets, including a growing number of large gourmet Central Market stores in major metropolitan areas and more than 80 smaller Pantry Foods stores, often in more rural areas. H-E-B also has 20-plus upscale and discount stores in Mexico. H-E-B processes some of its own bread, dairy products, meat, and tortillas.
Foot Solutions (866-338-2597) opened its 200th store last month in Victoria, Australia. The company is also planning to open an additional 20 stores within the area. In the U.S., the company is currently opening four to six stores per month and has commitments from four other countries for continued international expansion. Using medical computer technology and a scientific 10-step fitting process, Foot Solutions scan customers’ feet and make custom, accommodative, comfort-foot inserts, as well as custom orthotics. The stores carry a line of shoes designed to fit specific-shaped feet.
