Who's Opening & Where H&M Hennes & Mauritz (212-564-9922) is planning to open approximately 100 stores by the end of the year, mostly in Spain, France, Britain, Canada, Germany and the U.S. In addition, China will become a new market for the company during spring 2007. H&M signed contracts for one store each in Shanghai and Hong Kong. The company also is planning to open its first stores in the Middle East in Dubai and Kuwait this fall and next year and is planning to enter Greece and Slovakia for the first time. H&M Hennes & Mauritz designs cheap but chic clothing, mainly for men and women ages 18 to 45, children’s apparel, and its own brands of cosmetics. It operates about 1,244 stores in 22 countries with direct sales operations in selected areas. Germany is H&M’s biggest market accounting for more than 25% of sales. About 60% of its clothing is made in Asia, the rest is manufactured primarily in Europe.
Family Sports Concepts, Inc. (813-226-2333) is planning to open 51 Beef O’Brady’s restaurants this year. Family Sports Concepts operates a chain of approximately 210 wholly franchised Beef O’Brady’s family-style pubs throughout about 15 states nationwide, primarily in FL. The restaurants feature buffalo-style chicken wings along with sandwiches, burgers, and a selection of appetizers.
Nokia (914-368-0555) is planning to open stores in the top 18 shopping centers worldwide. Its first U.S. store opened during June in Chicago, IL. The company’s products are divided primarily between four divisions: mobile phones, multimedia such as home satellite systems, and mobile gaming devices, networks such as wireless switching and transmission equipment used in carrier networks, and enterprise solutions such as wireless systems for businesses. It has agreed to combine its network equipment business with that of Siemens in a joint venture.
American Eagle Outfitters, Inc. (724-776-4857) is planning to open two stores called aerie by American Eagle by the end of the year. The stores will specialize in selling bras, underwear, camis, hoodies, robes, boxers, sweats and leggings to the 15 to 25 year old female. The stores will occupy spaces of 2,200 sq.ft. to 2,800 sq.ft. and will be designed with a blue and white interior to create a feminine environment. The mall-based retailer sells casual apparel and accessories such as shirts, jeans, shorts, sweaters, skirts, footwear, belts and bags aimed at men and women ages 15 to 25. Virtually all of the company’s products bear its private-label brand names: American Eagle Outfitters and AE. It operates more than 850 American Eagle stores in the U.S. and Canada and plans to open more.
Firehouse Restaurant Group, Inc. (904-886-8300) is opening a location in Lexington, KY and in Cincinnati, OH early next year. Firehouse Restaurant Group operates and franchises some 200 Firehouse Subs sandwich shops throughout 12 southern states. The chain offers a variety of hot and cold sub-style sandwiches, as well as soups, salads, and sides. The company plans to operate 1,000 units by the end of 2008.
Gander Mountain Co. (651-325-4300) is planning to open five stores during the second half of the year. Gander Mountain currently operates approximately 100 outdoor sporting goods stores focused on hunting, camping, and fishing in 18 mainly Midwestern states. In addition to outdoor equipment and related accessories, the stores also sell apparel and footwear, as well as all terrain vehicles and gear.
Panera Bread Co. (314-633-7100) is planning an aggressive expansion throughout the greater Cincinnati and Dayton, OH areas. The company is a leader in the quick-casual restaurant business with more than 870 bakery-cafes throughout approximately 35 states. Its locations, which operate under the Panera and Saint Louis Bread Company banners, offer made-to-order sandwiches built using a variety of artisan breads, including Asiago cheese bread, focaccia, and its classic sourdough bread. Its menu also features soups, salads, and gourmet coffees. In addition, Panera sells its bread, bagels, and pastries to go. About 310 of its locations are company-operated, while the rest are owned by franchisees.
Lenny’s Group (212-787-9368) is planning to open 13 sub shops throughout Manhattan, NY during the coming five years. The company also is looking to open locations in Seoul, Tokyo and Beijing.
ROAD (206-336-9440) is planning to open four stores nationwide. The stores will open this fall in Chicago, IL; Los Angeles, CA; St. Louis, MO and Kansas City, MO. ROAD is a menswear retailer that offers classic designs updated for a modern look. The collection includes denim with unique treatments, pants fabricated from non-denim fabrics such as distinctive luxury twill, tencel, corduroy and special fabric rinses. The company also is planning to open several additional stores nationwide during 2007.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is opening an 88,000 sq.ft. Kohl’s store at Santa Maria Commons, a 117,335 sq.ft. center located at the intersection of South Broadway and McCoy Lane in southern Santa Maria, CA. The company currently operates 740-plus discount department stores throughout 41 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. The stores specialize in moderately priced name-brand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories, and housewares.
JCPenney Co., Inc. (972-431-1000) is opening a 90,000 sq.ft. store at the intersection of U.S. Highway 27 and State Road 50 in Clermont, FL. The retailer operates more than 1,000 JCPenney department stores throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico.
The Wet Seal, Inc. (949-699-3900) is opening an Arden B store at Willowbrook Mall in Houston, TX next month. The store will offer fashions featuring runway trends styled for everyday wear. The Wet Seal, Inc. currently operates approximately 400 shops throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico that sell moderately priced casual clothing and accessories. Most of the 300-plus Wet Seal stores are mall-based and appeal to junior women ages 17 to 19. The retailer’s more upscale Arden B. chain runs about 90 stores that target women ages 18 to 40. About 25% of the company’s stores are in CA, FL and TX. Wet Seal sells brandname and private-label merchandise through its stores and Web sites.
Halloween Express (859-282-5555) is planning to have approximately 200 stores in operation by the end of 2007. The company expects to be operating about 140 stores by the end of this year.
Christopher & Banks Corp. (763-551-5000) is opening a store at Kent Station, an approximately 260,000 sq.ft. center located in Kent, WA next month. Christopher & Banks is a specialty retailer that sells moderately priced private-label women’s fashions. Some 725 stores cover 45 states and operate as Christopher & Banks, C.J. Banks, and Acorn. Sportswear accounts for two-thirds of sales; the rest comes from sweaters and accessories. Its C.J. Banks stores offer specialty apparel in sizes 14W and up. The chains cater to working women ages 40 to 60 years old. In 2004 the company purchased the upscale women’s fashion 21-store Acorn chain from womenswear retailer Gilmore Brothers, Inc.
The Johnny Rockets Group, Inc. (949-643-6100) is planning to open a Johnny Rockets restaurant at The Boulevard Mall located at the intersection of Niagara Falls Boulevard and Maple Road in Amherst, NY. The company operates and franchises approximately 180 restaurants (less than 50 are corporate owned) in about 30 U.S. states and a half dozen other countries. Johnny Rockets serves such old-fashioned diner fare as hamburgers, malts, fries, and apple pie.
Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open more than 1,500 stores throughout the U.S. during the coming years. It is opening more than 300 this year alone. Wal*Mart Stores currently operates more than 6,300 stores, including about 1,200 Wal*Mart stores, 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter stores and 565 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly two-thirds of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico and it owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.
CWN Management, Inc. (949-756-9001) is opening a Claim Jumper restaurant during Fall 2007 at Brookfield Square, a center located in Brookfield, WI, marking its entry into the state. Brookfield Square will be anchored by The Fresh Market. The company owns and operates about 36 casual dining restaurants throughout five states. The company also licenses the Claim Jumper name to frozen food maker American Pie which sells the wares through about 3,000 supermarkets in a dozen states. The restaurants offer casual dining and are known for offering large portions of steaks, fish, rotisserie chicken, ribs, wood-fired pizzas, pasta and burgers.
Hooters of America, Inc. (770-951-2040) is planning to open a Hooter’s Restaurant in downtown Portland, ME on Free Street. Opening is slated for December or in January 2007. Hooters of America operates and franchises more than 425 Hooters restaurants throughout approximately 45 states and 20 other countries. The beach-themed bar-and-grills cater to sports fans and are known for their spicy chicken wings as well as their hostesses, who dress in the chain’s trademark bright orange short shorts and tight T-shirts. Hooters also serves chili, sandwiches, and beer. The company operates almost 120 locations and franchises the rest.
IKEA (610-834-0180) is opening a 339,000 sq.ft. store in West Chester, OH during fall 2007. The store will be situated on a land area of 56 acres along Interstate 75 at the southeastern corner of Allen and Muhlhauser Roads, south of the Union Centre Boulevard exit. The store will feature three model homes, 50 room settings, a supervised children’s play area and a 300-seat restaurant serving Swedish specialties. Other features will include a Children’s IKEA area in the showroom, baby care rooms and play areas throughout the store. IKEA currently operates 237 stores throughout 34 countries, including 28 stores in the U.S. Other stores slated to open in the U.S. this year include locations in Atlanta, GA; Dublin and West Sacramento, CA; Frisco, TX; and Somerville and Stoughton, MA.
Dippin’ Dots, Inc. (270-443-8994) is planning to open a location at Apache Mall in Rochester, WI. The company sells Dippin’ Dots ice cream, frozen yogurt, and frozen ice in 250 retail locations. The company doesn’t sell Dippin’ Dots in supermarkets, but does sell them in amusement parks, malls, movie theaters, restaurants, and sports arenas across the U.S. and in nine other countries.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is opening a 137,770 sq.ft. Lowe’s Home Improvement store in Whitehall Township, PA. The store will be accompanied by a 28,839 sq.ft. garden area. The space was formerly occupied by Levitz. Lowe’s currently operates more than 1,250 superstores throughout 49 states and has announced plans to expand into Canada in 2007, as well as opening 150 to 160 stores nationwide. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, home fashion items, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools, as well as appliances (for which the company has a market share of 13%) and furniture.
Minyard Group (972-393-8700) is planning to open more locations, as well as opening in-store clinics. The company currently operates 67 supermarkets, which are located primarily in the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX area. Company banners include some 24 Minyard supermarkets, about 19 Sack ‘n Save Warehouse Food Stores, which are low-cost markets with customers bagging their own groceries, and some 25 Carnival Food Stores, which cater to Hispanics. Minyard also owns 15 On the Go gas stations.
Steve & Barry’s University Sportswear (516-740-7971) is opening a 20,000 sq.ft. store at Menlo Park Mall located in Edison, NJ. The store will be located on the lower level of the mall. The stores offer collegiate sportswear, jeans, khakis, sweaters, jackets, pajamas, footwear, accessories, hats and T-shirts at low prices. Steve & Barry’s sells officially licensed merchandise for over 350 other colleges and universities, as well as apparel for many favorite American brands, such as car manufacturers, Marvel comic book characters and food products. The company currently operates 135 locations nationwide.
Nordstrom, Inc. (206-628-2111) is opening a store at the Saint Louis Galleria located in St. Louis, MO. The 115,000 sq.ft. space was formerly occupied by Lord & Taylor. By 2010, the company is planning to open 19 stores. One of the nation’s largest upscale apparel and shoe retailers, Nordstrom sells clothes, shoes, and accessories through nearly 106 Nordstrom stores and about 50 outlet stores Nordstrom Rack throughout 27 states. It also operates a clearance store, a freestanding shoe store, and 30-plus Façonnable boutiques, primarily in Europe, and it sells goods online and through catalogs.
Borders Group, Inc. (734-477-1100) is opening a 22,000 sq.ft. store next month at Plaza El Segundo, a center located at the intersection of Rosencrans Avenue and Sepulveda Boulevard in Manhattan Beach, CA. The company currently operates stores in 50 states, as well as in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Puerto Rico and Singapore. Its more than 1,240 retail stores include 525 Borders superstores, about 675 mall-based Waldenbooks stores, and almost 35 UK-based Books etc. shops. The superstores host literary events and promote an environment with comfortable seats and cafes; they also sell music, videos and DVDs. In addition, customers can shop through each chain’s Web site, which are all operated through an agreement with rival Amazon.com.
Brastraps.com (866-879-7373) is planning to open kiosk locations within malls in southern FL. The company’s line includes over 90 styles, making it the largest single provider of fashion bra straps. Margarita Couture, the parent company of Brastraps.com, has grown into America’s largest fashion bra straps manufacturer.
Broyhill Furniture Industries, Inc. (828-758-3111) is opening a 50,000 sq.ft. Broyhill Furniture Gallery store at the Shoppes on Little Creek, a center located in Winston-Salem, NC. Opening is slated for fall 2007. Broyhill Furniture Industries is one of the leading furniture manufacturers in the U.S. The company’s product line includes mid-priced bedroom, living room, dining room, and home office furniture, as well as occasional tables and home entertainment systems. Broyhill specializes in upholstered goods and serves both residential and contract markets.
