Who's Opening & Where Ace Hardware Corp. (630-990-6600) is planning to open as many as 40 stores in the Detroit, Ann Arbor and Flint, MI markets next year. The company is looking to open small neighborhood stores. Ace dealer-owners operate more than 4,600 Ace Hardware stores, home centers, and lumber and building materials locations in all 50 U.S. states and about 70 other countries. From about 15 warehouses Ace distributes such products as electrical and plumbing supplies, garden equipment, hand tools, housewares, and power tools. Ace’s paint division is the 12th largest paint manufacturer in the U.S.
Jones Apparel Group, Inc. (215-785-4000) is planning to open eight Anne Klein New York stores nationwide by next month. The following stores are slated to open this month: a location on Madison Avenue in New York, NY; Green Hills Mall in Nashville, TN; on Greenwich Avenue in Greenwich, CT; Plaza Frontenac in St. Louis, MO; Somerset Collection in Troy, MI; San Francisco Center in San Francisco, CA; and Copley Plaza in Boston, MA. At the Anne Klein New York stores, handbags will represent about half of the offering, with footwear, jewelry, belts, scarves, sunglasses and watches. Additionally, there will be items such as fragrant candles and note cards. Each store will occupy a space of approximately 1,600 sq.ft. and will be laid out in a series of “little rooms,” each dedicated to a different product category. The Madison Avenue location will be considerably larger at 2,500 sq.ft. and will feature select Anne Klein New York apparel items, in addition to the branded accessories. Jones Apparel Group provides a wide range of women’s and men’s clothing and shoes. Brands include Jones New York and Evan-Picone. Subsidiary Nine West Group designs shoes (Easy Spirit, Enzo Angiolini, Bandolino, Gloria Vanderbilt), and does business as Maxwell Shoe (Anne Klein, Joan & David). Jones currently owns and operates more than 1,000 retail and outlet stores.
Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a Target store in Decatur, AL. The store will be situated on a site with a land area of 30 acres at the intersection of Highway 67 and Highway 31. The store is slated to open during October 2007. The company currently operates approximately 1,440 Target and SuperTarget stores in 47 states, as well as an online business called Target.com. Target and its cousins, including SuperTarget, which sells groceries, and Target Greatland, have carved out a niche by offering more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise than rivals Wal*Mart and Kmart.
Kona Grill, Inc. (480-922-8100) is planning to open three more restaurants this year. Kona Grill operates a handful of upscale casual-dining restaurants offering both seafood and American dishes with an island twist. The restaurants serve both lunch and diner menus, and they offer a wide selection of sushi. In addition to dining, each location typically has a bar area for happy hour relaxation with margaritas and martinis. The restaurants are found primarily in the Southwest.
Long John Silver’s, Inc. (502-874-3000) is planning to open a Long John Silver’s restaurant in Salem, OH. The restaurant will open along with an existing Taco Bell to create a Long John Silver’s/Taco Bell combo location. Long John Silver’s operates and franchises about 1,200 nautically themed eateries offering such menu items as batter-dipped fish, chicken, shrimp, and hushpuppies. Patrons can also select from sandwiches and salads, as well as chicken items. The chain has nearly 600 franchised units, including a handful of international locations.
Walgreen Co. (847-914-2500) is planning to open a Walgreens store on Mount Rushmore Road in Rapid City, SD. The space was formerly occupied by Casa Del Ray restaurant. Walgreen operates about 5,400 stores throughout 47 states and Puerto Rico, and has three mail order facilities. Prescription drugs account for nearly 64% of sales; the rest comes from general merchandise, over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, and groceries. For added convenience, more than two-thirds of its stores offer drive-thru pharmacies, and almost all offer one-hour photo processing.
Carter’s, Inc. (404-745-2700) is planning to begin opening outlet stores throughout Canada next year. The company will operate children’s clothing and accessories stores across Canada under the banner Carter’s/OshKosh. The first three OshKosh and Carter’s co-branded outlets will open during August 2007. As many as 29 of the big-box outlet stores could open over five years under both brands or the Carter’s name alone. OshKosh is currently sold at specialty chains in Canada and at department stores such as The Bay. In addition to producing babies’ and children’s sleepwear, Carter’s (which operates through its The William Carter Company unit) is a leading U.S. maker of apparel for fashionable youngsters. Its primary products include newborn layette clothing, sleepwear, and playwear. It also licenses its name for underwear, strollers, toys, and shoes. Carter’s markets its items under names Carter’s and Tykes through department and specialty stores and 181 company outlets nationwide.
Whole Foods Market, Inc. (512-477-4455) is planning to open four stores during the fourth quarter of this year. The stores will occupy spaces of 58,000 sq.ft. Whole Foods Market also signed leases averaging 55,000 sq.ft. at the following locations: in Dublin, Oxnard and Los Angeles, CA; Denver, CO; CT, FL, Schaumberg, IL and in NJ. In addition, the company signed a lease to expand its store in Boulder, CO from 39,000 sq.ft. to 74,000 sq.ft. Whole Foods Market operates approximately 180 stores throughout 30 U.S. states; Washington, DC; and in Canada and the United Kingdom, The stores emphasize perishable products, which account for more than two-thirds of sales. Whole Foods offers more than 1,500 items in four lines of private-label products (such as the premium Whole Foods and a line of organic products for children, Whole Kids). In addition, the company has moved into related businesses of nutritional supplements.
The Quiznos Master, LLC (720-359-3300) is planning to open a Quiznos sub shop in Fairhaven, MA later this year. The Quiznos Master operates the No. 2 sub sandwich chain (behind Subway), with approximately 4,500 quick-service Quiznos Sub restaurants that are popular for their made-to-order, oven-toasted subs. Patrons can choose from a variety of signature subs, such as the Honey Bourbon Chicken, BBQ Chipotle Carved Turkey, or Honey Bacon Club. Quiznos also serves salads, soups, and dessert items. The company operates in more than 20 countries, and nearly all of the company’s restaurants are owned by franchisees.
Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (303-595-4000) is planning to open a total of 80 to 90 restaurants this year, with most of the locations to open during the second half of the year. Chipotle Mexican Grill operates a chain of about 500 quick-casual Mexican eateries in more than 20 states. Customers can build a 1-1/4 pound burrito or taco from a lineup that includes chicken, steak, barbecue or free-range pork, as well as beans, rice, guacamole, and various other veggies and salsas. The company maintains that with extras its menu offers more than 65,000 choices. It also serves chips and salsa, beer, and margaritas. Just a handful of the restaurants are franchised, while the rest are company-owned. Chipotle is 65%-owned by hamburger giant McDonald’s.
bebe stores, Inc. (415-715-3900) is planning to open a bebe boutique store at Time Warner Center in New York, NY. Opening is slated for mid-Fall. The store will occupy a space of 6,800 sq.ft. and will be located on 10 Columbus Circle. Area retail includes Whole Foods Market, Williams-Sonoma, Sephora, Hugo Boss, A/X Armani Exchange, Montmartre, Eileen Fischer and Borders. bebe designs and sells contemporary women’s clothing and accessories under the bebe, BEBE SPORT, and bebe O brands through about 225 stores in the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico; abroad through licensees; and online. The company targets hip, body-conscious 21- to 35-year-olds. bebe dropped its bbsp line in favor of the casual BEBE SPORT. bebe licenses its name for items such as eyewear and swimwear. More than 90% of bebe’s products are designed in-house and produced by contract manufacturers.
Publix Super Markets, Inc. (863-688-1188) is planning to open a 28,000 sq.ft. Publix store on North Tamiami Trail in Sarasota, FL by mid-November. The store will be part of Broadway Promenade, a mixed-use project north of 10th Street that includes condominiums and shops. Most of the company’s 875 stores are in FL, but it also operates locations throughout AL, GA, SC and TN. Publix makes some of its own bakery, deli, and dairy goods, and many stores offer flowers, housewares, pharmacies and banks. The company also operates five “Pix” convenience stores throughout FL.
Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc. (407-333-7440) is planning to open an 8,700 sq.ft. restaurant in downtown Charlotte, NC. Ruth’s Chris Steak House operates the nation’s largest chain of high-end steak houses (in terms of number of restaurants), with more than 90 company-owned and franchised locations in about 30 states. The chain’s menu sports a variety of steak cuts, along with lamb, veal, and fresh seafood. More than 40 of the restaurants are operated by the company, while the rest are franchised. In addition to its domestic locations, Ruth’s Chris has restaurants in five other countries, including Mexico, Taiwan and Canada.
Carlson Restaurants Worldwide, Inc. (972-662-5400) is planning to open a T.G.I. Friday’s restaurant on Gammon Place in Middleton, WI. Carlson Restaurants Worldwide operates and franchises more than 800 T.G.I. Friday’s casual dining restaurants across the U.S. and in more than 50 other countries. The chain offers a menu of beef, chicken, and seafood dishes but is popular for its appetizers and bar-like atmosphere. CRW owns about 290 of its Friday’s locations and franchises or licenses the rest. CRW also owns Pick Up Stix, a chain of more than 100 Asian restaurants that serve Americanized-Chinese food. The company is a subsidiary of travel and hospitality conglomerate Carlson Cos.
Lowe’s Cos., Inc. (704-758-1000) is planning to open a Lowe’s Home Improvement Center in Carthage, MO. The building will be situated on a land area of 10.2 acres at the intersection of Route HH and Garrison Avenue. Opening is slated for the first quarter of 2007. The store will have about 111,200 sq.ft. of retail space, including 27,720 sq.ft. for a garden center. Overall, the company is looking to open 155 stores this year and from 150 to 160 locations in 2007. The home improvement chain operates more than 1,250 superstores in 49 states and has announced plans to expand into Canada in 2007. The company’s stores sell about 40,000 products for do-it-yourselfers and professionals for home improvement and repair projects, such as gardening products, lumber, millwork, plumbing and electrical supplies, and tools.
Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) plans to open a 96,000 sq.ft. Kohl’s store on 10 acres east of the Treasure Coast Square mall on U.S. 1 in Jensen Beach, FL. Construction is slated for early next year and the store should open 12 months after that. Kohl’s currently has 13 stores open in FL. The company’s plans to open 68 new stores this fall, with three of them in Brandon, Clearwater and Tampa, FL. The company operates 749 stores throughout 41 states.
