Sprouts Farmers Markets (480-814-8016) is planning to open up to 30 stores throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth, TX market. The company already has build-to-suit sites in Frisco and Southlake under contract and offers out on seven more sites throughout the area. The stores, which average 35,000 sq.ft., have large vitamin and supplement areas, organic and nonorganic produce, a bakery, bulk foods and a fresh meats section.

 

Dollar General Corp. (615-855-4000) is planning to open a Dollar General store on Lincoln Street in Rhinelander, WI. Opening is slated for next month. The retailer operates a chain of more than 8,000 discount stores in approximately 32 states, primarily in the southern and eastern U.S. and the Midwest. Offering basic household items such as cleaning supplies and health and beauty aids, as well as some apparel and food, the company targets low, middle and fixed-income customers. Its stores are generally located in small towns off the radar of giant discounters such as Wal*Mart. Its big-city stores, which account for about 30% of its total, are located primarily in lower-income neighborhoods. About a third of its stores’ goods are priced at $1 or less; the highest-priced products go for about $35. The stores occupy spaces of 9,000 sq.ft. There are currently 84 Dollar General stores located in WI.

 

OSI Restaurant Partners, Inc. (813-282-1225) is planning to open a Carrabba’s Italian Grill restaurant on Rockwood Road near the Southridge Shopping Center in Hendersonville, NC. Opening is slated for late September or early October. Formerly Outback Steakhouse, OSI Restaurant Partners is an operator of more than 1,300 locations in the U.S. and 20 other countries. Its 930-unit flagship concept, Outback Steakhouse, offers steak, chicken, and seafood served in an Australian-themed atmosphere. OSI also operates 200 Carrabba’s Italian Grill restaurants, which offer pasta, chicken, and seafood dishes. Its other concepts include Bonefish Grill, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse, Lee Roy Selmon’s and Roy’s. More than 1,100 locations are company-owned.

 

G.I. Joe’s (503-682-2242) is planning to open between 30 and 40 stores, including sites in northern CA and UT, during the coming three to five years. The sporting goods chain is moving to more of an emphasis on outdoor apparel and footwear.

 

Amlings Flowers (630-850-5070) is planning to open a store at the intersection of Washington Street and Ogden Avenue in Naperville, IL. The company currently operates seven locations throughout the Chicago, IL area.

 

Cosi, Inc. (847-597-8800) is planning to open a Cosi sandwich shop in Owings Mills, MD. The company operates and franchises more than 100 eclectic Cosí cafés throughout approximately 15 states offering premium and specialty coffees and made-to-order sandwiches. Its menu also features breakfast items (including its bagel-inspired Squagels), salads, soups, and desserts. Most of its restaurants also offer dinner and drinks after 5 p.m., while its Cosí Downtown units (about a quarter of its cafés), which are primarily located in non-residential business districts, close in the evening. Cosi also offers delivery and catering services and operates a handful of coffee kiosks in Macy’s department stores.

 

Lenny’s Sub Shops (901-753-4002) is planning to open a total of 98 restaurants throughout 11 TX counties and will acquire two existing stores in Dallas and Denton, TX. Texas Sandwich Investors, LLC acquired the rights to open Lenny’s restaurants in Collin, Denton, Ellis, Grayson, Hunt, Johnson, Kaufman, Parker, Rockwell and Tarrant Counties in TX. The Memphis, TN-based company recently opened locations in San Antonio, TX, as well as in the new markets of Las Vegas, NV and Charlotte, NC. The company also sold multi-unit restaurant packages in CA, GA, KS, MI, NV, SC and VA.

 

Dunham’s Sports (248-674-4991) is planning to open a total of seven to 10 stores this year. The chain continues to focus on opening larger stores from 30,000 sq.ft. to 45,000 sq.ft. that can accommodate a larger assortment of merchandise.

 

Pro Image (801-296-9999) is planning to open eight locations this year, including its first stores in New York, NY and Seattle, WA.

 

The Fresh Market, Inc. (336-272-1338) is planning to open a 22,500 sq.ft. Fresh Market store at Brookfield Square, a center located on West Blue Mound Road in Milwaukee, WI. The Fresh Market operates nearly 60 full-service upscale specialty supermarket stores in over 10 U.S. states. The company specializes in perishables goods, including fruits and vegetables, meat, and seafood. The chain plans to open eight to 10 stores per year moving forward.

 

Skechers (310-318-3100) is planning to open a new concept called SoHo Lab, which features the company’s more fashion-forward lines such as Michelle K, Mark Nason, 310 Motoring, Unltd. By Mack Ecko and Rhino Red. Skechers plans to open between 15 and 20 stores by the end of this year, including four SoHo Lab units.

 

Scheel’s All Sports (701-232-3665) is planning to open a 235,000 sq.ft. store in Sparks, NV, the company’s first location in the state. The company is looking to open a total of two locations this year. Scheel’s currently operates 22 locations throughout IA, MN, MT, ND, NE, NV, SD and WI.

 

Gym Source (212-688-4222) is planning to open a minimum of five additional locations this year. By running its own warehousing, inventory and operations centers, GymSource is able to expeditiously respond to request from setting up a gym in three days to replacing a piece of equipment.

 

Target Corp. (612-304-6073) is planning to open a 126,000 sq.ft. Target store at Lincoln Mall in Matteson, IL. Situated on a land area of 10 acres on the east side of Cicero Avenue, the store will replace the current Target located across the street on South Cicero Avenue. The store will be a Target prototype and will include a pharmacy, Starbucks and a food court. The company currently operates approximately 1,440 Target and SuperTarget stores in 47 states, as well as an online business called Target.com. Target and its cousins, including SuperTarget, which sells groceries, and Target Greatland, have carved out a niche by offering more upscale, fashion-forward merchandise than its rivals.

 

Dickey’s Barbecue Pit (972-248-9899) is planning to open a restaurant at the intersection of New Road and Valley Mills Drive in Waco, TX. The space was formerly occupied by Krispy Kreme. Opening is slated for early next month. The company currently operates more than 60 locations throughout several states. The restaurants specialize in beef brisket, pulled pork, hot links, turkey breast, smoked ham and spare ribs. It also offers an array of salads, vegetables and desserts.

 

New World Restaurant Group, Inc. (303-568-8000) is planning to open five Noah’s New York Bagels stores by the end of the year. That number is expected to triple next year. New World Restaurant Group is one of the largest bagel shop operators in the U.S., with about 625 company-owned and franchised locations in 34 states and Washington, DC. Its quick-service eateries operate under a number of brands, including Chesapeake Bagel Bakery, Einstein Bros., Manhattan Bagel and Noah’s New York Bagels. The shops typically serve fresh-made bagels and spreads, along with coffee and other sandwich items. New World also operates New World Coffee, a coffee shop chain. About 435 of its restaurants are company-owned. Investment firm Greenlight Capital controls 95% of New World.

 

Wal*Mart Stores, Inc. (479-273-4000) is planning to open a 128,000 sq.ft. Sam’s Club store on Lakeland Highlands Road in Lakeland, FL. Opening is slated for late winter or early spring. The company currently operates more than 5,700 stores, including some 1,350 Wal*Mart stores, nearly 2,000 Wal*Mart Supercenter locations in the U.S. and the United Kingdom, and 550 Sam’s Club stores. Nearly 75% of its stores are in the U.S., but Wal*Mart is expanding internationally; it is the top retailer in Canada and Mexico. It owns 42% of Japanese supermarket chain SEIYU. Wal*Mart also has operations in Asia, Europe and South America.

 

Best Buy Co., Inc. (612-291-1000) is planning to enter China and open a location in Shanghai this year. The company operates a chain of approximately 785 stores throughout the U.S. and Canada offering a wide variety of electronic gadgets, movies, music, computers, and appliances. In addition to selling products, the stores offer installation and maintenance services, technical support, and subscriptions for cell phone and Internet services. The big box stores are located in 49 states and five Canadian provinces. In addition to the Best Buy brand, the company operates under the names Magnolia Audio Video, with 20 stores in the U.S. and Future Shop with about 120 locations in Canada.

 

Kohl’s Corp. (262-703-7000) is planning to open 68 stores during the fall season, with 65 opening next month and the remainder opening during November. The company will make its initial entry into WA with four stores in the Seattle market and will continue expansion into FL, entering the Tampa market with three stores. The company currently operates 740-plus discount department stores throughout 41 states. About a third of its stores are in the Midwest, where Kohl’s continues to grow while rapidly expanding into other markets. The company specializes in selling moderately-priced namebrand and private-label apparel, shoes, accessories and housewares. Kohl’s carries top brands such as NIKE, Levi’s, OshKosh B’Gosh not typically available to discounters.

 

The Steak n Shake Co. (317-633-4100) is planning to open a total of 26 company-owned restaurants during fiscal 2006. In addition, the company will open a total of six franchised locations. The Steak n Shake Company specializes in steakburgers served along with creamy, homemade shakes. The company operates and franchises nearly 430 Steak n Shake restaurants throughout approximately 20 states in the Midwest and Southeast. The full-service chain’s menu features its hallmark steakburgers and milkshakes, as well as fries, chicken sandwiches, and chili. About 60 units are operated by franchisees, while the rest are company-owned. Open 24 hours a day, Steak n Shakes offer breakfast and late night dining, but lunch and dinner account for most of the chain’s sales. Each location serves its food on fine china.

 

Shoe Pavilion, Inc. (818-907-9975) is planning to open another eight to ten stores by the end of fiscal 2006. Shoe Pavilion currently operates approximately 99 stores in AZ, CA, NM, NV, OR, TX and WA. Its self-service style stores are typically located in outlet centers and strip malls. Shoe Pavilion sells brandname shoes, such as Ralph Lauren, Steve Madden and Nine West at discount (20% to 60% less than department store prices) by purchasing manufacturers’ overruns; buying shoes directly from Italian and Chinese factories; and purchasing shoes during off-peak production periods.

 

Abercrombie & Fitch Co. (614-283-6500) is planning to open an Abercrombie Kids store at Willowbrook Mall located at the intersection of Highway 249 and FM 1960 in Houston, TX next month. The store will feature collections for boys and girls ages seven to 14. The Willowbrook Mall store will be the retailer’s fourth Houston location. Abercrombie & Fitch sells upscale men’s, women’s, and kids’ casual clothes and accessories at approximately 850 stores in North America, mostly in malls, and also sells via its catalog and online. The company also runs a fast-growing chain of teen stores called Hollister Co., and a chain targeted at boys and girls ages seven to 14 called abercrombie. Its newest format, RUEHL, is a Greenwich Village-inspired concept for the post-college set.
